;D Yep! Decided to put it up here as i go. The idea is to get it ready for the pre '90 kick off to make up the numbers as im keen to see the class get going. Wont hurt to keep big Bill honest on his big white either ( :-* ).
I have been wanting to attack this thing for ages, but i had resisted the temptation as i have too many projects on the go already. The chrissy break has been great as i have prepped all the bikes and finished the other projects (well almost all). So i attacked it last night. The frame is a mess so its been pulled apart so as to repair. Motor is in great condition, took the top end off to have a gander. Just have to sort the water pump ( just seals by the look as it has a new clutch cover which is a bonus).
I am going to cheat a bit by taking the wheels off my 500 RE seeing as i dont ride it.

good stuff Brad, is this one the rider then as you have another if i remember.
i will follow this with interest Mate. i recommend you beef up the 2 thin engine mounts as i foud mine to be elongated, 86' frame has thicker mounts in this area, nothing that a few machined spcers won't fix. i now run metric fine thread high tensile bolts on the lower engine mounts wiht nylok nuts to keep them tight.
keep the pics coming.
-
Yeah Hoony , this is the rider. The other will be the garage queen with the nos stuff on it. This was a good running bike when i bought it, so motor and rear suspension are good. Thanks for the tips.
-
any topic thats got something to do with an early CR500 im hooked... :)
keep the pics comin 090...
-
hey brad did you check out

Cool mate see if this one can beat Hoony's post ;D
Is this the one you brought from the side of the road or another ???
Juast keep the faith brother B-Rad
Here's what it will look like when finished
Big Bill.
-
hey brad did you check out
the part no on the cr500 cdi rusty ;D
CDI Part #'s
84' CR500 RE 30400-KA5-741
85' CR500 RF 30400-KA5-761
THE ABOVE 2 ARE PHYSICALLY THE SAME
THE LOWER 2 ARE DIFFERENT MOUNTING TO EARLIER 84' & 85' MODELS
86' CR500 RG 30410-ML3-000
87' CR500 RH 30410-ML3-771
What is the number you have russ? if brad wants it for this bike he can have it, i only wanted a spare for mine.
-
the part no is 30410-ml3-681
think it fits 86 onwards ;D
-
Yeah Bill. That is the one.$1800 special. I couldn't get down there quick enough to hand over the money, i didn't even haggle. Steve New actually found it.
Russ, if Hoony doesn't want it, can you bring it to tamborine and i will see how close it is.
-
Thanks mate but its yours for the taking Brad. i only wanted a spare for my 85'
beware they mount differently to 84', 85' and are functionaly different as well (you will have to run the 86' 2 coil stator, 84 & 85 have a 6 pole stator).
-
$1800 dollars
seen you coming ha ha ;D
will you have it ready for tambo
we are racing pre 90 there
i will drag out my 85 kx500
to keep the red bikes honest ;D ;D ;)
brad i will bring it to tambo and you can check it out ;D
i also have a couple of cr480 cdi s if anyone is interested ;)
-
Im interested in the 480 cdi's.
I am trying to get it ready for tambo.

i know they make Ign' covers Crabman, but are you sure they make a clutch cover for the air cooled CR500?
i though it was for the 87' and up CR500's only?

Motor is back together, water pump fixed etc. I thought i'd try black fork bottoms, paint is easy to take off if it doesn't look good.
Notice the old MC1+ bottle? My old man found it at his place. Unopened from the eighties.
I have decided to do the wheels up instead of pinching the wheels off the 84 . Im going gold rims and toying with the idea of silver hubs.

Hubs are painted and waiting for the spokes to arrive, so i should have them together by the weekend. Triples are sorted with new bearings. Went through the swing arm and greased it all up. The DG pipe was a bastard getting the clear lacquer off, shit it gets baked on. Three goes with the paint stripper to no avail so i ended up using a wire wheel on the drill to get it off and the rust up at the header. It has a nice procircuit muffler to go on it as well. Hopefully the frame will be sorted this week as well so when i get that back i will get my old man to paint it for me.
I decided to get the radiators cleaned out as there is some build up in them. To do it properly the radiator guy is going to cut the bottom tank off so it can be rodded through then welded back up. $180 to do it which i thought was a bit much but better than it over heating i 'spose. If anyone can get it done cheaper i'd like to know.

Spent most of the day yesterday sourcing paint for the frame, sand blasting it and painting it at my dads place. Left it over night to cure so i didn't do anything on it last night. Did the domestics in the am and the ol' boy brought the frame around about half three this arvo. So into it!
I did the wheels friday night, but the rear wheel had to be sorted by the guy who normally does my wheels as the late model rims have offsets to suit disc brakes , so the rim/ spokes had to be re angled. Hope to have it at the end of the week at the latest.

Im going to wrap this up as only fiddly bits to do . The front calipers are dragging so i will pull the brakes apart. Needs fluids and an air filter .
Took me until last night to get down the shed to do something on the beast.

-
Yeah i have 5 acres and i play on the back half. Have you bought any '89 cr plastics yet? I will have to put some on the one coming up from Victoria soon.
-
Yes for the 89 500, bought some 6 months ago, the 250 come with a full set of UFO plastics! colour is a little off but can't tell in the light of day.
The side plates are the hardest to get as they were only on this model (88 has different muffler / pipe layout I am told) so still looking.

G'day Shane,

WOOHOO. Shit these things are awesome. I finished it off this arvo and took it for a spin 'round the paddock.Dug trenches every where. Just after the action shot, the family dog decided to jump in front of me so i promptly ran him over :-[ ,the poor bugger. I put the bike down as well so there is a nice crease in the front guard already ::), so she's run in now :D
Bring on Tamborine!
-
Top Job and Nice Photo Brad!
pity the tanks on this model are so wide huh, makes it hard getting up over the front to keep the wheel down ;)
let us know how it compares to your 83 480 and 84 500 when you have time, i'm interested to know your thoughts.
-
Hey mate that is the right T shirt for riding that bike?
Hey had the 89 250 out for a ride yeterday and had a good trip over the bars!! not as good as Brett though flipped the 500 >:( >:( one bent rear end stuffed muffler and rear guard!!
Will PM the numbers Hoony, Was after a new set but I am going to race it now so will take what I can get.
