Does the PE400 pipe have restrictors in them???
-
only a big washer at the manifold end near the head but that would be long gone. there is also some sheet mesh spot welded inside the fat section. some say this is restrictive, it probably is a little bit but i wouldnt call it a restrictor. i leave it in as it cuts down the rtesonations and with it removed the bike is a little loudder and a lot more tinny. i get the oxy flame in there and get the whole pipe burning inside and burn all the carbon out. but warning you will create tones of smoke. dont do it if your neighbours are the sort that are easily upset. when you do it its quite spectactular and you will be surrounded in clouds of smoke, its like your watching a car do a burnout at the drags or something. definitely do it outdoors and face mask and glasses are a good idea as i find that red hot sparks fly out.
there is a folder on the PE forum showing how a PE 400 owner cut open his pipe to remove the mesh sheet spot welded to the 2 halves of the pipe.

Just as a point of interest, I had a PE 250 pipe as well as a 400 one split apart at one stage, the two expnsion chamber diametres are identical in diametre apart from the baffling that is fitted to the inside of them, on the 400 the baffle is spot welded as mentioned - and is fairly difficult to remove, each spot weld has to be ground away carefully so as not to cut into the pipe body. The 250 however is very easy to remove because internally it is a made to be a smaller diametre, so the baffle is held away from the chamber walls on little mounting brackets which do not require the same degree of finess to cut free - hope this helps.
