anyone know of a suzuki bar pad available with NO yellow on it? eg white 'suzuki' on black. i thought MXM did one but no bar pads listed on site. VRM only lists the black on yellow or yellow on black. i dont mind a bit of blue but dont want yellow.
-
I raised this very same issue with VRM and he said he would look into a limited run of black with white suzuki bar pads but I've yet to see any listed, AMS racing sometimes have some, try them.
-
Jeez I hate bar pads..... I reckon they look wanky, kinda like boot savers for handlebars. Shit I feel better now that little niggle is off my chest.
-
since last year MA? says you now have to have them in enduros/relaibilty trials etc even have to have them in club days and fun type gymkana events now. It might only be a MSA thing and not national i dont know?. ive only seen it in supplemtray event regs that come out separate to the MA book. Im pretty sure they would have already had to been used in MX though???? just like lever balls and plugged bar ends?..... and i dont want a modern shiny plastic one. dont fancy loosing any teeth either ;D
i dont mean to get people jumping up and down and worried now, just simply looking for a black & white pad. :)
-
since when ? ???
-
Our Modern MX junior Kids love em. ;D
What page number is it on in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport distributed by MA. ??
cheers
-
I'd like to see some pit nazi official try and tell me I have to run the fugly things on my bike.
What a load of shit.
-
And another thing......What the hell is a Reliability Trial. I've never seen one. I guess it's a SA thing.
-
thanks cyclegod, i knew there was a place i hadnt tryed yet (AMS)
yeah SA thing Firko http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=4472.0
this describes it http://www.motorcyclingsa.org.au/disc_reliabilitytrials.html
longest running motorcycle event in the world is the 24 hour reliabilty trial held in SA since 1924
surely Geoff Eldridge had spoken to you about them? he rode in the 1986 24 hr. been a bit of coverage in ADB over the years too
-
Yeah Leith, I was being a bit cheeky. I'd known of their existance but you never hear of them in any other place than SA. I seem to remember GE doing something along those lines but wow...it's been quite a while since he and I had a yarn, he's been dead for 16 years! I bet he thought bar pads were a wank though ;D.
-
no problems ;D
-
Before we hade the full face helmets of today , it made some sense maybe .
-
Leith, being doing enduros for 30 something years and never heard of bar pads. Are Bark Busters manditory also in SA ???
-
no handguards not essential. good place for storing zip tyes aswell. i think its just one of those rules they had to have. sidecars have to have those re-coil kill switches aswell, you know the ones on the stretchy leads
-
Or hide the fancy tea bags ;D

OK Mainline - where did you unearth the Black and White Yamaha one - cough up?

-
Sidecars and cyclecars * in all competition forms must be fitted with a lanyard type kill switch. Why? you ask because of the amount of wheels , meaning the rider has been lost from controlling the machine ( fallen off...) it is much much more likely to proceed on dangerously with the engine running as more than TWO wheels are in contact with the ground, yep it is far less likely to fall over " Look up what a cyclecar is !!!!

here ya go Rossco,

clicked on the yamaha search within his site.
i've got a couple of his seat covers and bar pads and the quality's is good.
-
good one bloke!
Yep I have bought from him before so know his stuff.
Thanks for the directions!!
cheers
Rossco
-
Rossco, depending on what bar you're running you may want to ask him if he has different foams available. I bought one of the pads pictured and although the quality and service is great, the inner diameter of the foam was way too loose on the old style steel bars i have. It wasn't a big problem I just wrapped them in some foam tape before i put the pad on, but it might be worth asking anyway.

Paul they are actually shock covers for muddy days , but you are right ,they could be used as Pad if you put foam inside .
-
I'm quite partial to the good ol' crossbar pads ;) after a chipped tooth and a nice painful ding across thje bridge of the nose some years back they've become a mandatory piece of equipment for near all my bikes. Very much a period items you either like or you don't but unlike bootsavers bar pads are as popular as ever and do serve a purpose ;)
-
does that mean i shouldnt wear
my boot savers ;D
-
back to original question, im hoping to get one from AMS. i didnt really think they would be such hated items and in the same category as boot savers, but i do agree they look a little out of place on pre 1970 bikes
-
I know this is leading with the chin but I just can't help myself - I happen to like boot savers!!!!!
;D
Rossco
-
i have some too, havent worn them yet as they are NOS
-
Its all in the colour choice and its good to have a bit of bling sometimes ;D
-
It's like having no Salt & Pepper with your Steak ;D
-
What the hell are boot savers?
I'm familiar with the ones worn on building sites - and fork boots - but I assume you're referring to MX boot savers...
I quit MX at the end of '79 - did they come in after that?
-
yeah came out early-mid 80's
-
heres a piccy of me on kent howertons works sr500
with boot savers cool eh 8)
-
think Johnny 'O' on his Mugen
this isn't him, but there's some fine looking boot savers
(http://mugen125.tripod.com/two_mugens2.jpg)
-
oh shit I get it........ :-\ they really are boot savers..sorry :-[
Yep use them, when I'm whipper snipping. :-[
-
yeah came out early-mid 80's
Yeah, took off with a thud - a fad that lasted about 2 weeks ::)
-
Haven't seen this kind of protection for a while either. 8)

-
Did anyone tell you that you look like Kent??
No, didn't think so!
And where's that smile??
Is that your ' race face ' look?
You psyched me out! :D
Do you wear old school boots to be able to wear boot savers? I cant get them around modern boots. I have bought about 5 pairs and none fit!
-
yeah i was trying to think of a way to steal it ;)
boot savers just fit over modern boots
only just
my jt ones are a bit rooted now
wore them on my xl honda and melted
them a bit doh :'(
-
Maybe i'm in the minority but i loved them, being a Vicco and riding lots of muddy meeting in the middle of Melbourne winters they were the easiest way to keep the boots free of mud and make the clean up faster, great invention.
-
All that have good taste love them :)
-
I won't deny owning a pair of Suzuki and a pair of Kawasaki bootsavers but the best thing I ever did with them was convert them into crossbar pad covers ;D
-
i am with hoony racing in vicco
in the eightys i wore them a lot
as specially wet meetings
they were cool back then ;D
and if i had not have rooted my own pair i might still wear them ::) ::)
-
there you go - I confess and they all start coming out of the closet!! When I was racing I even had them over a pair of Scott plastic boots - geez I looked good - not fast - just looked good :D :D :D (Well I thought so anyway with my Jofa chest protector making me look like a 250lb grid iron player!!)
Rossco
-
maybe some people were a little embarrassed to say they had them until now ;D
-
OK, I understand; the boot savers do have some practical reason for being there.
My only exposure remains Holeshot's picture, but it seems to me you could make your own if the old school jobbies don't fit the larger modern boots.
A reasonably tough fabric, something in between the 'bike cover' stuff and tarpaulin should do it.
Cut to appropriate size, stitch velcro down the two edges wear it meets at the back of the boots - TA DAH!
The fashion conscious could paint them.
Example: for the 'Brad' model go the additional step of painting white and liberally dusting with gold sprinkles... ;)
Or is that all too easy?
-
Maybe you needed a pair of bootsaver savers , Rusty , to protect your bootsavers from being melted on your pipe :D .
-
Jofa chest protectors eh.. ;D if it hadn't been the fact I wanted a back protector for the Oz titles a few years back I'd be still using mine. Same as the white/orange ones Decoster pumped back in the mid 70's with matching knee and shin pads that are all but guarantee'd to hook up under your tank right when you need to foot most or if the fuel tap is facing out they will turn off your fuel for you also ::) apart from this minor bother they both served me so very well and have the gouges and rash to prove it that would otherwise have been in my body :o I need a maniquin to display this shit so all the world can see just how cool we looked..not! :D speaking of old gear, I have a pair of old O'Neal booties I'd like to pass on. They are in pretty good nic only for the fact the plastic tabs that slip into the buckles are split broken or missing. There is only about 8 of them and they'd be a snap to make excusing the pun :P They are a size 'BIG' ;D about a 10 or 11 I'd guess (much too big for me) $40+ postage is a bargain never to be repeated!! (least not by me) ;D
(http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a205/Doctor_Suzuki/boots002.jpg)
thats the little tab below the boots that needs cloning ;) oh, an 1 steel toe cap thingy is missing..otherwise they're all good 8)
-
this topic has well and truely wandered :)

Now we are back on Track :D
-
what was the question ??? :D
-
yes! it looks like bar pads are out and boot savers are now back in style 8) providing of course you ride Evo or pre '85..another good reason to stick with pre'75 ;D
-
i was looking for a suzuki bar pad! maybe we need to start a thread on boot savers and protective gear?
-
Sorry Leith, only black and white Suzuki crossbar pads I've ever seen were on the DS80's but they are small (160mm) Maybe buy 2 and do a cut and shut job but still available new over the counter for $15 or so rather than the fleabay item...maybe something you'll need to have made especially if you really want one.

The listing says DS250 but that's wrong, they never had the pad like the 80.
-
Found some boot savers for Team Green.
They look good - I can picture myself in those...
-
pre75 bar pads - look'n good 8)
-
since last year MA? says you now have to have them in enduros/relaibilty trials etc even have to have them in club days and fun type gymkana events now. I had my bike stopped at the Dt nats this year and had to fit a Bar pad before it was allowed to race, somthing to do with it having a cross brace, never run one before so ended up tying a jumper to it with tape, it lasted till race one, then accidently fell off. ooops
-
I have gotten strange looks from the scrutineers at most of the road trials that I rode in last year because of the piece of refrigeration insulation that is tape to the cross brace of my XT500 to comply with the rules. There is no specification as to what it has to be and I am not going to spend $40 plus on a piece of vinyl cover foam for anyone. I saw one guy with a tee shirt taped to his cross brace, and the scrutineers had to accept it, again due to no specifications for the padding in the rules.

tryed to get one of these pads from AMS. well what a headache. emailed them, got a price of $18 US or something. then asked for shipping cost and i got this huge invoice for all these parts like pistons and cables and stuff ??? i replyed saying whats going on, i didnt order this stuff? didnt get a reply to that but did get shipping price but then the previous quote on pad had gone up a few $. i said in your first mail you told me it was $18 can you still do it at the first price you quoted. several days later and no reply. i thought stuff it i will email MXM UK and see if they have some. Got a reply tonight and was told they have 1 left, they told me total cost etc and i paypaled them the money 10 minutes ago and it was all sorted in a very short time. it cost about $36 all up when if i got one from USA it was going to be about $60 ::)
-
When did this bar pad bullshit become a so called rule? I will not put one on any of my pre '75 bikes any time soon, no matter what some pit nazi tells me. They look stupid and are of dubious benefit when the rider is wearing a full face helmet. I can't believe 5 pages have been dedicated to the subject. ??? Are you serious that these things cost $36 Leith? I would have thought 5 bucks would cover it. Seriously.
-
yeah well half of it was about other stuff besides a bar pad, and lots of big photos of stuff makes more pages, if you took out the photos of shock covers, an boots etc it may of only been about 3 pages. Not my fault, but who cares, theres plenty of other topics that go on for ages about so called meaningless crap but it doesnt really bother me as i dont read it.
-
No, no, no....I'm not blaming you or anybody Leith. I'm just surprised so much discussion could go on about a subject I've never given any more than a minutes thought to in my whole life. I guess I've missed something.
-
yeah ok i was thinking the same and i was surprised aswell, i was just thinking it would be a few replys to point me in right direction and that would be it. i got one on the way now so hopefully thats all you will hear from me on this :)
-
the banter is fun and the more people who come out of the closet the better!
:D
Rossco
-
My whole problem with this, that everyone seems to have missed is that I'm disapointed about being told by MA that I have to fit them to my bike when I shouldn't have to. I've been riding dirtbikes for almost 40 years without one single cross brace injury. If folks like them, thats between them and their god but being told that we have to fit the dumb things to our bikes is a foot in the door for further draconian rules.
-
Firko ,
I'm pretty sure we will never see a bar pad on your bikes. :-* 8)
The rules seems to have come out this year.
In the MoM (MA) rules and it's only for MX and SX,pg 147 Rule 17.2.1.5.
I can not find it anywher else for any other discipline.
Then I read Moto-Trails and they have no rule for hair/jewellery or armor :-\
LWC3077,
DJ Racing asked one question on this forum and it lasted 46 pages with 22240 views,so I reckon ya should be proud your Topic has run for 6 pages.Slap on the back to ya. :P
cheers alison
-
If that's right Alison, why was Freaky made to fit one at the Vintage Dirt Track Nats?....As far as I know, there's never been any comittee discussion on the matter.
-
DJs Suzuki footpeg thread is the alltime champ though. I for one have all of the info I'll ever need regarding Suzuki footpegs. In fact it guided me towards the fatty pegs I've bought for all of my bikes!. It's all good, even if we don't understand or agree with barpads or wear boot protectors.
It's better than the disgraceful racism that I've just uncovered on an American off road forum. Apparently America is doomed, the "niggers" are going to run rampant now that Obama's in power. Lock up your daughters!
Jeez I'm glad I live in the lucky country.
-
some disciplins have there own separate rules book which come out separatley to the national wide manual of motorcycle sport and this rule book is to be used in conjunction with the MOM sport. so even if it doesnt say it in the MOM it will probably say it in the specific rule book for dirt track and reliability trials, enduros or what ever that are brought out by each states commitiee. i know in SA since last year bar pads have been requirements on most or all offroad forms of the sport that are conducted by MSA and that even includes club fun days and gymkana/rally type events, basically anything you need a MA license for. i know one guy who had fat bars with no cross bar so you have to fit those square bar pads, but he had a rollchart holder in the middle of his bars and he still had to fit a pad some how???? how do you do that?
i wouldnt really worry about it too much in other states at the moment because so many machine examiners are so slack and dont check hardly anything. And thats what really pisses me off because you go to all the effort to make your bike comply and then the guy in front of you gets through with a bike thats not up to scratch and doesnt meet the rules.
i looked at the suzuki foot peg thing a while back but couldnt see what the fuss was, there is stuff all pages, unless it was on the old forum?
-
It think it was on the old forum before we were hijacked by the Turks Leith.
I've got InterAm solid bars on my Maico with a Renthal bolt on cross brace fitted. I'll simply unbolt the cross brace. My Cheney is fitted with period Webco handlebars with a curved crossbar, don't know how I'll work that one out. My Boyd and Stellings has Pro Taper bars with no cross brace, does that mean I have to use those silly head stem covers like the BMX guys use? Like I've said before, the insurance companies and scaredy cat officials are running the show these days.
Next thing, we'll all have to wear fluro orange or green safety vests while we're racing. Don't laugh, It's been proposed in other sports.
I know that MA heirachy monitor this forum. Wouldn't it be refreshining if they could address a couple of the quetions we have such as this barpad stuff or the weird new dirt track changes that appear to be going on behind our backs if the Nepean revamp rumours are true.
-
Hey Firko, I'm guessing your opposition to the bar pad is 'era related'.
I'm guessing they weren't available when you began riding; they crept in somewhere along the way and you weren't interested in the 'fad'.
I began in 1975 and bar pads were already on bikes; I saw it as a safety measure so I had no issues.
Dunno, just a thought.
-
Wombat...That's exactly the reason. I ended my serious racing career in 1975. I was walking out the door as you were walking in :D. I'm a stickler for period authenticity (as if that's a new revelation!) ::) and these things look stupid on pre '75 bikes IMHO. Imagine Black Betty with a bright and shiny bar pad and you'll get my point.
My bigger concern however is that MA is forcing us to fit them to our bikes. I'm so over officials trying to protect us from ourselves with oppressive and badly thought out safety regulations. If facial injuries are their main concern then ban open face helmets. Like I said earlier, I've been riding dirt bikes since 1967 and have been over the bars too many times to count and I've never suffered a cross brace injury. The same goes with all of my old fart riding mates whos combined time on board dirt bikes would total hundreds of years!
-
I also got pulled up at the Sa State title here in OCt for not having a bar pad on the TM suzuki. ITs never had one and no one ever asked before but for some reason thats twice in one year by 2 differant scutineers, maybe they went on the same training camp the month before. I got a Scutinners ticket and as far as im concerned i look for 2 things,
1) - shit wont fall off and 2) - its components are riding in the right period.
The rest is personal taste.
another one i seen at some events is to only allow those plastic flexible hand guards, no loops back to the bar ends nor bark busters ? where's the logic there and it was a trails event and the other was a guy on a side car in a pre 85 MX. there are some weird interpretations out there.
im just keeping a lenght of plumbers foam lag in the van now just in case. ;D

Wasp, you forgot to use spell checker again .... You can't fool me ;D
-
I must have missed something. Whay are you angry again Alison? I 'tips me lid' to all of you unpaid officials. I was one myself for years. What however, has this got to do with bar pads and the evil plot by MA to force them upon our bikes? ???
-
AHHH thats why I love to race at the sportsbar . Simple rules and all the volunteers are happy :D
-
Will you be quiet Walter :-*
I'm not angry now,not at you lot anyway :) (taken tablet also)
but it gets up my goat, how MA have just got us by the short and curlies with pedantic stuff.
It gets harder and harder every year. :-\
Just if we could get on with it,but life wasn't meant to be easy.
-
bar pads at the sports bar the mind boggles , have they got a bucking bull in there, now that would be funny watching the sports girl trying to hang on thered be boobs and ping pong ball flying every were ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) :o :o :o :o
-
I understand your frustrations now , Allison. Been there , done that . My answer to that is just to move on and ride where there is simple rules and no official bulldust . ( Like CD ) ;) With every Dollar those rulemaking , goalpost shifting people receive , its confirming to them, that are doing the right thing ;)
-
Between the legendary Sports Bar and Klub Kevlars equally legendary Mermaid Bar in Auckland (and the new branch under construction in scenic Kellyville, NSW)http://www.mermaidbar.co.nz/ (http://www.mermaidbar.co.nz/) we've got it all covered eh Walter! These humourless pricks at head office just don't get it. Thank god for the irreverance of the Klub Kevlar Kompound, Shoeys Team Husky marquee and the YSS Shocks camp at Classic Dirt.

Used to hate cleaning the bar pads after a long saturday night in the pig pen oops puiblic bar, all covered in beer slops. cigarette ash and reeking of smoke, blood ,spew, teeth ,eyeballs and some other even nastier stuff. Actually believed the "VB' insignia on the barpads did mean vomit bag....
-
i checked the link too walters just applied for a job lol( empolyment section) ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Wombat , I have to say , I did enjoy your contribution (pic) to the bar pad thread 8)
Yeah ta Wasp, but I must give credit to 'Google'; that was some random image I bumped into whilst looking at motorcycle pictures...
Here's another one - this girlie is protesting bar pads by parking her arse in front just so ya can't see it!!
(Better hers than Firkos...)
The Mermaid Bar: 'Auckland's only club with an underwater strip show' - now there's a concept...
I'm sure Klub Kevlar look long and hard at potential Pubs worthy of the 'By appointment' moniker.
And underwater stripping wins a guernsey... they're a different bunch the Kevlars...
Now that's an observation and not a critisism, OK? ;) :D ;D

press release #1
At this very moment a team of highly skilled artisans are working like ants constructing a fabulous new venue for Klub Kevlars World HQ. Becoming a disillusioned with having to travel to Aucklands 'Mermaid Bar' for corporate meetings, the Klub Kevlar executive met at Melbourne Kevlar annexe, Bar Humbug in Little Collins st to develop a working plan for our own free standing corporate home.
The Jones bunker in leafy Kellyville, NSW was chosen as the location and a development application was submitted and accepted by Baulkham Hills Council to construct a multi level corporate garage/cocktail lounge/business complex, hearafter to be called Mermaid Bar West or "The Tiki Lounge". A proposal to name the venue "Bar Pad" was overturned by chairman Firkin, describing the proposal as "just plain dumb".
One of the most volitile subjects discussed at the now infamous Bar Humbug meeting concerned the proposed decor of the venue. A nautical theme concentrating on speedboat racing was proposed by delegate Phipps but that was dismissed by the executive council because "it'd be all about Phippsy and his Bridge to Bridge Hydroplane activities". Another proposal was to dedicate it to our (kevlar members) own racing careers, with photographs and our trophies displayed in custom built glass cases. That concept was dismissed by chairman Firkin due to his not actually having any trophies to display, thereby inciting a potential feeling of inadequacy when in residence at the venue. Eventually after some heated debate, the executive agreed on the Tiki Bar format, as it presented an ideal opportunity to display the previously "tacky" souvenirs collected by members over years of visiting holiday beach resorts and so called "island Paradise" holiday venues. Delegate Jones has accumulated a veritable museum of tacky wood carvings, plastic palm trees and other paraphenalia which will provide the foundation for the decor. Other Klub Kevlar members are donating decor items.
It is currently envisioned that the "Grande Gala Opening Luau" will be held in June to enable Klub Kevlars American members, McCook and Siege (the t shirt guy) and Klub founder Mikey Jolley from NZ who will all be in town for CD6, to attend.
Computer generated impressions of the proposed Klub Kevlar "Mermaid Bar West" corporate HQ. Updates, including further news of overseas guests for CD6 will be announced at later intervals.

You don't "become" a member. It's a birthright.
-
I've got a coconut carved into a little buddha ash tray, A foot high plastic bird of Paradise advertising South Pacific Lager and a very groovy pair of bamboo bar stools that Mrs Yamagirl herself is itching to see go to Kellyville. This is going to such a shrine to poor taste I can't wait.

Beautifully hijacked thread!
Not really hijacked... the girl in orange appears to be holding a 'bar pad' in her left hand.
and the bloke snuggled up behind her has one in his pocket - or he's just glad to be there... ;)
