I'm probably showing my ignorance here ,but I need help identifying a suzuki.
My latest toy is an early PE175 ,well most of one,and it has what appears to be an oil tank in the backbone. I don't remember this on the bike I had back in the late '70's,so how many of these bikes had this ???
Doc,here's your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge of all things yellow!

errr i think ALL PE engines were premix and air cooled so what that tank is has got me stuffed
-
Sounds like an oddity or a home made mod. How about a pic or two?
-
Can't say I know what it is Yuma ??? The only thing I can think of is someone may have tried making an automatic chain oiler and the backbone was the oil res for said oiler or maybe someone decided to carry spare 2 smoke oil in the frame for emergency purposes in situations where only straight fuel may have been available??
-
send a photo.
No PE ever came with an oil tank. ALL were premix.
where is this "thing" located exactly?
there sure isn't too much vacant space on a PE175...

Im of the thinking after the replies that its not a PE frame you have ... checked the numbers?
-
let us know the frame number. its either a modified PE frame for the above mentioned reasons or its another frame. It it a PE engine you have? any chances of it being a TS engine with oil injection in modified RM/PE frame? therefore requires a tank soemwhere. i have seen TS motors slotted into RM/PE type frames before.
-
Sorry I have'nt replied for a while, just upgraded from 98 to vista, and still trying to work it out!
The frame and engine are matching numbers for a '79 PE175.It must be a homemade mod but its very well done,it looks original.
Once I work out how to post pics ,I will send some.

i would like to know where the filler hole is because in all my photos there doesnt seem to be any room in front of the fuel tank for a filler like XT/TT. whats actally been stored in there anyway, spare oil or petrol? kinda seems like a good idea anyway.
-
The 3rd pic is of under the backbone at seat/tank joint
(I dont know if these pictures will work!! )

Looks like an ER oil filler bung in the top tube, I'd say someone had a TS motor in your frame at some stage probably a TS125 or 185 as they both have offset exhaust outlets that would clear the front tube.
-
it wouldnt have been a TS185 ER as they have centre port barrels.
-
Another thought is it could have once carried a 4 stroke power plant.
not sure id change the PE engine for a TS but a largish bore 4 stroke engine in a sweet handling little frame like the PE175 would make a nice ride.
-
Sorry!.....Original motor,matching numbers................The debate rages!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Chain oiler ?
-
Possabool...possabool...it does have a spigot underneath but its along way back to the chain
The early kwakas used to have a similar setup in the swingarm!!
-
I'd go chain oiler. I'd also say he ran a small regulating tap like a lawnmower fuel tap and could probably turn it off an on at leasure. I'd pondered this same idea for the 2smoke reservoir on the TS400 (without the tap)but went with an old brake master cylinder bottle instead. Since it has the engine I'd say it's a mega chain oiler ;D The RL250 has an oiler in the swingarm and one must always remember to turn off oiler when bike is parked :o oops ;D

chain oilers were all the go for enduro bikes in the late 70's.. some like mine had a bottle of lube taped to the frame near the shock mount. others had flash setups like the above mentioned swingarm and backbone resevoir jobs.
Maybe Your baby PE has seen a bit of compo YUMASTEPSIDE
