It looked a bit rough but sold for $810.00 PE's are starting to get really sought after.

yeah thats about normal for that bike. a lot of people want the 250's now. i payed $700 for one around the same condition about 4 years ago that was roughly the same condition, maybe a little better, but had a very, very good original headlight assembly that was still very yellow and just needed a polish. i dont know how it never ended up white, but the engine needs doing. i only paid $400 for my 82 model but thats just because the onwner didnt really know what it was, to him it was just a bike for blasting around the farm.

im after a pre 75 250/400 sooner or later but next year it looks like footy might interfear with some of the events you were in the right place at right time Leith for the 250z I wont be being another pe soon unless its on the cheap side because the 400 has all the power in the world and will last me forever the PE's look to be going the way of the yam it's then Thanks Michael. :)

i thought you sold it ages ago. rare as hens teeth. once in a life time oportunity for someone. i only really know of about 2 of these 400 Z's elsewhere and they were in canada and being dismanltled and sold in pieces so no longer exist as complete bikes. i bought the forks off one from canada as they are an improvement over the X models. we have about 90 members in the PE forum world wide yet no one else owns or has seen a 250 or 400 Z. i have seen about 2 250 Z's advertised ( no photos though) at wreckers in just bikes but you dont really know if they are just a 81 model. last year i did see a 250 z at a bike swap meet. it didnt sell as it was very, very rough. its down at 2 wheel recyclers at Hackam south of Adelaide if they havent sold it yet.
http://www.twowheelrecyclers.websyte.com.au/

from the 2 photos i have seen of Firkos 400 Z, it is very original low use bike but is missing the unique Australian market Z model tail light and the blinkers and mirror etc and has the usual white faded headlight.

also look for folding tip gear and brake pedals, different sprocket cover (same as later RM's i think), different side stand, a reflex reflector on rear fender, extra reinforcement under rear fender, extra rubber mount over rear frame loop for fender, and im 99% certain they should have dodleg brake and clutch levers and 2 piece rubber covers with quick adjusters like the 82-84 175 Z. my Z top triple clamp is differnent to my T models but its only the shape of the casting. forks are different. the sliders are machined different inside, the chrome legs are differnent and have guide bushes fitted. im pretty sure parts of these are same as mid 80's enduro model DR250 forks. not sure aboit damper rods and valving though. and different decals.

there probably a few more things aswell but ive forgot. i have Z microfiche parts cards but havent found any one who can print, scan or view them yet. when i can view this info i may discover more differences.

yours must be close to being from the last batch of 1980 models i reckon. the first batch of X models would of came out not long after August.

no, ive never seen a genune DG PE 175 or 250. some ex pro rider probably has one in USA somewhere, not many would exist. i have pretty much got all those parts to build my own version anyway, except for the trick KYB forks, but i have other parts to improve the forks.

i think mine was professionally raced as it had the stand bracket cut off tool was removed different handlebars and a few little different bits here and there was the X model more popular you see a lot of X models on ebay
Title: Re: Pe 250 81 sydney
Post by: LWC82PE on December 11, 2008, 08:29:36 pm
lots of PE's had the sidestands removed and the brackets hacked off. my Z i reckon  was raced as well in reliabilty trials like the 24 hour trial i SA as it had the electrics modified and a big light fitted for night racing and was changed to 12 volts etc. it also had a tool bag and DR tool canister mounted.

some people have said the T models were less popular than X models as people took a while to adjust to the sight of blue stickers.

the easiet way to tell (if it hasnt got original decals) if its a Z model is to quote frame number to a suzuki dealer to be 100% sure. it could have the manufacture date of 11/81 for example and be a 82 model. i think mine was made early 82, i cant remember. ???

Mine was missing a few little peices like chain guard one of if you could make a dg replica that would look great the one in the manual looks to be 175 78 or 79 it has different guards and the dg swingarm looks trick any idea if i could get a hold of that mx lighter headlight cover :)

i didnt realise ive just went over my 100th post hooray your beating me by a bit Leith ;D

i will check all the ones i see now my dads mate had them new and i bet he still knows were to get some i will ask him if he knows anything about the Z's i like the look of the Z's more than the X's of course i like the look of the t's because i have one but they all look good

oh yeah mine would just be be my own trick modified version for racing and would be aiming to build something exact as DG becase i dont think they actually officially made T/X DG modifed PE's, but you could just go and buy all the goodies your self and piece together a trick looking bike. As its a later model so i dont need the DG swing arm as the stock one is fine. They were only for the 78/79 models. those swing arms are extremly rare. i dont know anyone with one and have never seen one apart from in pictures.

i dont know what state your in but not all states in Australia got Z model 250/400 soem state dealers will not even have them on their records.

one more thing, another easy way to tell its a Z is to look for folding tip brake pedal. dont go by gear lever as any one can fit a folding tip lever from a RM or something and after 25 years who knows whats been changed so you can be fooled if you go by that. mine still had original folding tip gear lever. its highly unlikely that someone would have gone out and fitted a Z model brake pedal to a X unless they bent one and went to order a new one and were supplies with the Z pedal which may of superceeded the X pedal. its very likely tht the brake pedal fitted to a old PE is still original if its one of the ones thats been sitting in a shed for 15 years.

ok im off for break now

Ok Leith  mine has the original brake lever as its usually something you dont need to change because of it not having splines like the gear lever

ohhh more questions :) No DG head made for 400. possibly could get special ordered ones for 250's??. ive seen one on RM 250 T. havent seen any in DG catalogues but that doesnt mean they were not made as ive seen DG ads for head for CR 480, YZ 490 and RM 500 but they are not listed in DG catalogues. i have one for the 250 though :)

best chance for aftermarket head for PE 400 would be to find one off a big bore bike with same stud pattern and then modify/improve dome to suit. you might be able to find a Webco or FMF head, they made some heads for big bore bikes.

the shocks on DG PE were aftermarket KYB air shock. possibly you could have got Works Performance too but i think the KYB air shox is what they mainly sold. they were annodized gold. they are OK but not as good as dual air chamber fox airshoxs. i have plenty of fox airs and ohlins for my bikes.

I got this picture today in a magazine from france. It’s from an article on a  modified PE 250T done in early 1981 as the magazines project bike by the looks of it .I could pretty much build one very similar but without the Simons forks.

And this is a PE 175 kitted out with gear from DG.
