I've got Noel's old IT175F.

Needs a proper IT motor (currently has a hybrid DT175/IT125 motor), and a tidy-up, and I'm seriously considering swapping to 38mm forks and lengthing the rear shock.
And maybe a YZ125E alloy swing arm.

I still haven't worked out how to put pics on this thing yet, but they'll come eventually (i'll get my teenage daughter to do it for me). However, I'm in the early stages of rebuilding a '81 XL250S as an enduro mount. Motors fully stripped, checked what's needed to get it working properly again, now it's  nearly ready to go back together.
With the frame I think I might move the top shock mounts and the swing arm mounts forward to get a bit more rear wheel travel, add a pair of better shocks and that may help the rear, plus I have a spare pair of RM250C forks antd tripples I'm thinking of adapting to the front along with a 21" front wheel to help the front end go where it's pointed.
 Not sure what to do with the rest yet, given time it will come to me.

 Working on another phantom for vinduro, Iv'e got engine the been rebuilt, waiting on Sammy Miller to ship my gas betors. In the mean time I am doing the bodywork, rebuilding the carb and re-drilling and re-tapping every one of those useless 7mm bolts out to 8mm. The picture is prior to the restoration

Here's my 82 PE for AHRMA CC next year. RM125 shock and rear fender shown. New spokes, seatcover, nos bits, and sidepanels not shown. Topend and seals yet to do too. Decided to stick with the stock tank rather than do an RM tank/seat swap.

Like Nathan I also will be restoring an IT175F.
As well as the 2009 Vinduros I'll take it to the Yamaha IT Australia meet at Jugiong. http://www.yamahait.com.au/forum/ (http://www.yamahait.com.au/forum/)

These are my 2 bikes i just brought not long back, im trying to get the IT 175 G  up and running first then i will tackle the PE 175 T , they both pretty much need everything to be goer's bearings, chain - sprockets, air filters, fork seals, boots, all cables and levers-grips, tyres, tubes, handle bars, seat covers, brake shoes, plastic's etc, etc.

I just got a new seat cover and tank cover from New Zealand, but the seat cover is at the trimmers as it does not fit to good , hopfully by next week it will, I got the tank cover because i cant be bothered sanding down the tank, plus have same for the PE on its way soon.

Hopefully these bikes will both make it to Broadford Vinduro a little better off than they look now,  if not then the DT's will be back out  :)

All these goings-on about Vinduros has got me motivated to get my old Suzuki out and ridable again. The idea is to get it ready in time to ride at the next Vinduro at Conondale.
Here is what it looks like after cleaning most of the cobwebs off. That bashplate is an OEM item I was lucky enough to buy from someone on these forums about a year ago. Thanks again whoever you are. It is a beaut.
The bike was put together in 1979 from a 1979 SP370 and an RM250C for enduros and trail riding because I was tired of rebuilding the motor in my IT175D. The engine cradle section is from the SP370 and the rest is from the RM and I welded it together when I was a 3rd year apprentice fitter and turner. The Suzuki motor is now 400cc and has a nice big Dell Orto pumper carby bought from Geoff Udy's shop in about 1980 to go with the simplified exhaust. I can never decide which front wheel to use as believe it or not, both the SP370 and RM250 front wheels weigh pretty much the same!! I think it is the strong-as rim on the RM wheel that makes up the weight. The RM wheel looks better but the SP brakes are marginally better and of course has a speedo drive.
The front guard I haven't ditched yet as it reminds me of the origins of the RM250C. The front guard was originally hand signwritten "Springwood Suzuki" in black paint because the person who sold the RM to me was a sponsored MX rider. It is pretty much on its last legs though.
After getting rid of the incredibly stiff original Suzuki shockies, I bought and eventually wore out a set of S&W piggyback strokers and then in about 1990 I bought those weird Marzocchi shocks in the photo when I couldn't find any other shockies the right length. I stopped riding it and de-registered the bike in about 1994 when I finally bought a modern bike (XR600). When I lived in Townsville, the Suzuki was set up for long-distance rides with the smallest rear sprocket that would allow the chain to clear the sprocket nuts and the biggest front sprocket I could get. Great fuel economy but not the best seat to be sitting still on for hours.
Anyway it brings back great memories for me every time I look at it so I thought someone else might get a giggle out of it too.

I'm working my way to getting from the first one (as it arrived in my shed) to the second one (an image from a collector in the US).
So far everything has come apart, all the non-standard stuff is packed away. Paint has been stripped, correct parts acquired, hubs bead blasted and laced with new spokes and rims, and the silver metal parts have been powder coated.
Will start assembly when all the nuts and bolts and things return form the electro platers.
I'll do a resto photo series when I get nearer to making it look like a bike again.

You're welcome!  ;D
Looking at your bike has got me thinking I should put together another SP in Vinduro form. The ultimate would have been a Dick Mann or C&J frame, but that's not going to happen so I might just keep it closer to stock.
I've probably got enough spare parts to build a another bike in the shed. I think there's even some decent Hagon shocks. Might need a tank though............  :-\

I have finally managed to get most of the bits of the "new" XT500 that I am building up for tihs years Reliability Trial series bolted to gether.

(http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s120/coljay/XT26-1.jpg)

Basically its a 1976 XT500C frame fitted with 35mm 9" travel Ceriani forks, over- length Koni gas shocks (I think they were from my 370 Mk11 Frontera). The engine has a 90mm Wiseco piston, Tige 503 cam, S&W valve springs, flowed SR500 head and will run either a 38mm EI or Mikuni carbie. Electrics are from a SR500 and the lights are what were used on last years bike. Hopefully I should have it up and running in the next few weeks, although I am thinking of putting the engine into the XT500 that I rode last year to run it in, as it is already registered.

Tex,

The latest edition of Trailzone hasn't made it to country SA yet, so I didn't know that the Picture which I send in month ago made the mag.  The bike pictured in Trailzone is last seasons XT500, which is just visable behind this seasons XT picture previously in this post. A few parts have been carried over from the "old" bike to the "new" bike, mainly the headlight and 12V electrical system, exhaust pipe sump plate, handle bars/controls and fuel tank. The new improve XT has a fully rebuilt 535cc engine, which I got running over the weekend, but have lubrication problems with, and a slightly modified frame with much better suspension. Hopefully the mods will make the bike quicker and easier to ride.

With help from my daughter, following are a series of pics of the before and to date progress of the '81 XL250 I'm currently working on.
It's had a complete enging rebuild, modified swingarm and RM shocks and an RM250C front end including 21" front wheel fitted.

Well, I finally got my "new" XT500 finished, and registered for the road thanks, to a small injection of funds from Team Kevin Rudd Racing.

(http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s120/coljay/New-XT500.jpg)

I spent the weekend fitting the new tyres payed for with the sponsorship dollars, and sorting out the 38mm Mikuni carbie.  I still have a few bugs to work out to get the carbie setup spot on, but it is good enough to start riding and putting some miles on the newly rebuilt engine before the first round of the Reliability Trail Series, the Gawler 6hr in two weeks time.

What tank are you going to use? Std XL-S tank? (Not many others fit that weird frame style)

Michael, in SA we have events that run into the night, therefore the need for better lighting. Havent your heard of the 24 Hour trial?

Yes I'll be using the original tank, I did get hold of a Malcome Smith plastic tank circa 1975 but it just won't fit proper enough so it's back to the std tank. I didn't really want to use the original steel tank for fear of damaging it. I'm having it panel beated and painted as we speak so hopefully the bike will be ready to ride in the very near future, just waiting on the tank. I'll be taking it to CD6 along with my RM250B.

PMC,

Its a nice project. I have a simliar one in mind, w similar swingarm mods (tho I'm using an 82 mono swingarm & rear wheel), but styled along the lines of the early ATKs w their colour scheme.

Have you tho't of trying a plastic XR tank? An XR200 tank is a reasonble fit on my frame, but a bit short & needs the std seat foam reshaped at the front to look 'at home'. To my mind they're a much nicer shape than the std XL-S tank (which I think are ugly)

I don't have one to try but the plastic XR500 tank may fit even better cos its longer & would fill up the space better. They're 2.4 US Gal whereas XR200 is 2 US Gal, so neither are too bulky.

Its a bit hard to see much of the detail in the pics, so any chance you could post a nice side-on pic of reasonable size & good lighting of where the project is up to now pls?
Title: Re: Whatcha makin' ?
Post by: pmc57 on April 22, 2009, 06:05:01 pm
JC
I would have liked a better shaped and ideally plastic tank like the ones off the XR's, but not knowing what would fit or not I wasn't too keen on just buying anything and hoping for the best.
The fit with the seat was another issue as I'd already had it recovered so whatever tank I use would have to fit the seat I have. Add all these together and I just thought go with the tank I have.

I'd like to be able to post some more user friendly pics, but I still struggle to post pics because of the size reduction requirement. Those that are on were with the help of my teenage daughter, I realised later that you can't open them up any bigger, sorry about that.
The bikes all but finished except for the tank and side covers, can't wait to get the tank back and have a ride to see how it handles the mods to the front and rear.

Rims are powder coated ,wasn't my prefered option but the anodiser advised due to the heavy scratchs etc that anodising would be a waste of time.
Fork legs and hubs are bead blasted with two pack clear coat.
Took it down today and got a Blue slip now ready for rego  ;)

(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/Bikestuff/KDX200B/May03-09Nathan004.jpg)

Not quite finished, but I'm pretty happy with myself, seeing as it started the weekend looking like this:
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/Bikestuff/KDX200B/kdx1.jpg)

A lack of spark was traced to a dead stator - funnily enough, the dead stator looks pristine, while the functioning one looks like its been dragged from the bottom of the ocean...
Plus lots of other fiddly stuff - cleaning out mud-wasp's nest from the carby, regreasing stiff steering head bearings, swapping tyres, etc.

Main things still to deal with are:
Cleaning up the pipe (stupidly, I have a brand-newie that I'm too scared to fit to the bike - you should have seen how long it took me to fit the NOS RHS sidecover. ::));
fitting a smaller front sprocket (this is a 15T one - apart from the gearing issues, it prevents me fitting the cover);
making a muffler;
Fitting a kill-switch;
and sorting out a rear guard/rear frame loop.

I haven't actually ridden it yet - it started second kick, and sat there idling happily - but then I remembered that The Boy was asleep inside so I shut it down. Apart from anything else, with no muffler its way too loud to go ripping around my suburban block...

There's a long story behind the bike and the bits, but the simple version is that I've been able to assemble a running bike that looks OK, for SFA money, thanks to Roger, 'the other Brent', Greg, Marty, Bruce and Nev - all top Aussie blokes (even if one of 'em is a Kiwi):)

As projects get moved around the shed, the RM/PE175 comes out for some TLC.

As it stands it is running '84 43mm forks and twin-leading shoe brake, PE175 engine. '84 wheels front and rear.

It needs some new shocks, a small amount of frame welding and then a strip down for the cosmetics.

With a Preston Petty headlight and tail light it should look Vinduro enough. Much lighter than a PE, I hope it is worth the effort.

Almost back to semi original but for me it's about a little individuality anyway ;) not to mention the outrageous cost of replacement stickers. No-one apparently has reproductions but I wasn't overly fussed in the originals regardless so all's good :) you can usually pick these up for a little over $500 running, more or less for better or worse. 32hp/110kgs and a cheap ride for pre'85 VMX or Vinduro ;)

That's a bargain ride, Doc. I had one of those new in '88. For some reason.............   ::)

My Montesa is right to go so I'm currently working on the RS250 project. (Still....  ::) ) Not too different to VMX42's PE/RM thingy.  ;)
