I know Cyclegod has already sort of started this thread ( sorry CG ! ) ,but if anyone out there is building,or thinking of building,a TM,TS or even RM based enduro mount, lets hear about it ,see some piccies or just share your thoughts and ideas !
Mine is......'72 TS250 frame
'72 TM motor
TF185 tank (ag model )
PE seat
TM wheels
PRESTON PETTY guards
A few frame and suspension mods and some bright orange paint.........Iwant it to look like Rolf Witthoeft's '78 Z751 (dream on......)
-
At least the colour will be close............
-
I wish !!!
-
Don't say sorry bring it on, the more the merrier I say. Is that bassani pipe for a 185?
-
bet its lighter....hey nice bike, it has that Rokon feel about it, state of the art mid 70s...really cool bike on a budget. Plus if you take into account spares availability you should be able to ride it hard forever.
Consider the Mudslug AG handlebars, ideal they come with built in bark busters.
-
I wish !!!
Squeezed into a KTM chassis ???
-
It looks like a Bassani, not sure what its off Thats what I reckon Marc, no shortage of old TS's about ! Just made up out of what I had in the shed or whatever I could trade for.
-
Yerp bassani or Torque pipe i reckon, both worked better than the stock on the 185. from memory that heat shield looks like bassani as the torque was a lighter unit but the same style
-
As much as my bike and I enjoy all this attention ,we want to see everyone elses toys ...............so whip them out so we can measure them...............does that sound odd ???
-
I reckon that looks pretty cool, but I think the Bassooni pipe wil work much better in the exhaust duct.......................
-
.........and probably with better mounts than tie wire !!!
Its only a mock up to see if everything fits.

hi all
im making up a rm185 s using a 185a motor and a rm125s frame with rm125a swingarm to match up to 16.25 inch destroked fox airshoxs and cr250 83/4 43 mm forks also to be destroked with a plastic pe175 tank and pe175c steel base seat, pipe is a rm125m with turned around inlet to match up to the 185 exhaust port or a cr125 elsi down pipe and 30mm mik carb off my cooper 250 crosser, might rm/ts the box and spark and tweak the inlet port to suit the carb and dedag the rest of the ports, front wheel is xt500 for a bigger drum up front and er185 solid hub rear wheel

mmmm, I did have plans recently for the TS185er. It 'was' going to sport complete '78 RM125C front and rear suspension/swingarm/clamps and wheels. Easier to go this way than it is to fit a centre port reed motor into the single downtube RM125 frame. Not a complete idiot that I'd wreck a perfectly good RM frame to build it ;) anyway that idea got canned and I put together a stocky but I do have plans for a TS250 vinduro as it would from all accounts appear that I've managed to score an early TS250 with the factory RT kit goodies fitted ;D cross my fingers and pray to Santa ;) other than this I'd entertained thoughts of whipping some lights on my TS125R and then there's this little unit I'm toying with also at present and it's going the vinduro/modded trail as well ;)

Sounds cool (I had to read that twice to make sure I got it all). Post up a pic when it's done.

28 is it! my goodness! :-\ I know what I have but I've never learnt to count. I thought I only had about 5 or so ;D

Hey Roger,
Back to yr TSM 250. Looks nice. TF tank suits pretty well.
What are the forks from?
In the interests of saving a possible disaster down the track tho, I think you'll need more gussetting on the swingarm forward of the new bot shock mount.
-
,,,,,,,,,,yeah,I thought that too John! I'll probably put a full length rib on it as I also want to hang the centre stand from the front of the swingarm.
Roger
-
Yeh Roger,
A full length gusset would be a considerable benefit I believe - preferably under the swingarm. Gussets are best in tension (they can be made thinner) & it would interfere less w the chain on the underside.
I have a theory that much of the TM/TS's handling probs are due to the spindy poorly braced swingarm & would be improved w gussets along the bottom of ea arm. I'll try & take some pics & post them to illustrate what I mean.
Would that be a PE250 front end on yr bike?
What seat is it?
-
Makes no difference if the arm is braced under or over.As the aim is tie both arms together to stop arms bending independantly, or if your putting a rib on there that only increases the amount of material the forces have to bend.Which is the 'steel ruler rule' ie get a ruler have the numbers facing you and hands on each end, now try to bend each end toward the ground or sky, next try the same thing with the numbers facing the ground.
-
The seats a PE but not sure what the forks are..........too short for a PE,just a set that I had and they fit,but by the hub and the triple clamps ,they appear to be Suzuki.
Not sure what I will do with the swingarm exactly ,might shorten, rib and "banana" it yet..........I like the idea of making a silk purse out of a pigs arse !!!!!!
Roger
-
L, w all due respect, yr pretty quick to jump to conclusions & not consider the full picture.
When yr bracing to stop the arms moving independantly of ea other, yr right, it makes no diff whether the brace is on the top or bottom (except that its more out of the chains way on the bottom) because the flex goes both ways at diff times, so the gusset has to cope w compression & tension whether its on top or bot.
Those stresses are highest close to the pivot/cross brace & taper off the futher you move away from the pivot/crossbrace. If thats all yr bracing for, the gusset can also be tapered down as you move away from the crossbrace.
However, under the shock mount its a diff story, & thats what I was referring to. If the gusset there is on top it is largely under compression & therefore has to be thick enough to resist buckling as well. If it is underneath, its largely in tension & can be slightly thinner cos it doesn't have to resist buckling.
-
Gentlemen! Please return to your neutral corners.................this is supposed to be about tarting up an old girl so we can take her back out on the town!!!
Roger.............or ref
-
R, is that the std TM/TS rear frame/seat loop that yr using, or was it modified when you moved the shock mt forward? It seems to fit that seat perfectly.
-
The rear diagonal upright and top shock mounts were cut off and moved forward and the rear loop was heated and bent to match the PE seat
Roger
-
Thanks R, thats about what I tho't. Forks could be 1st PE250 as it only had about 7.5" travel. But other Suz trailbikes had similar looking sliders. Hub looks like PE250.
My guess is 80/81 PE250/400 seat. Can anyone else confirm?
-
sorry, my baby TS didn't quite end up how I planned :-\ I just sorta went with the flow (of parts in stock) and ummm..I lost the plot ::) maybe the 250 will turn out more to Vinduro spec :P 9 days since purchase have passed at this stage but I'd reckon another month or so by the time I polish till my fingers bleed and hunt up a few bits, indicators, a little wiring, grips, levers, tail pipe, guards etc etc etc...might even give it a full resto in good time as I have a zillion fond memories of the TS100L my father owned back when it was all starting for me :)

yes the factory pipe I removed from the original red bike is for sale..mind you I had to cut the header off to fit the other exhaust as it had previously been fitted to a high performance KE125, the rear section is all there and very very very very very solid. It'll last forever!! Now the price for this vintage PPPPPP! (Plankman Power Products Performance Power Pipe).. a measily $1000 buy it yesterday or best offer over $1.00, I'll toss in the used factory red guards too ;D
oh, and the bike above is a '75 L although it has the '76 A model head (single centre plug RM style finning) and '76 tank which gets rid of the ugly big locking cap.
-
love the rain guage, I mean side stand in back ground ;D
-
Those anodised red forks do it for me Doc ;D
-
side stand ..background eh! :D err.. :-\ what have you been smoking oldfart! ::) I dun see no raingauge anywhere! ??? am I really thick and somethings' going over my head? :P Pokey, pretty flash stuff, it's no wonder I have to pay such big $ to purchase this stuff, it's all one off almost :D
-
wheel barrow . Don't drink or smoke 8) partial to the odd cuppa ;)
-
Fair effort fer 9 days Doc :o would've had a fine note with MK1 exhaust i'd rekon ;) I can see a thong getting caught on the tip of the Plankman though ;D
-
I got a spare ts pipe here Doc you want?
-
ah yes oldfart, good ol' herbal tea ;) I knew there would be a valid excuse :D funny enough I just cottoned onto to what you meant but I was looking at the dog bowl in the lower pic thinking that would gauge 10 minutes worth of late :D
KB, actually nine nights, maybe 8 as there would have been a night I didn't play ;) frame painted with engine fitted as per standard procedure. Result is better than I thought possible and probably better than when I do the full ground up deal as there is no chipping, marking or scratching to worry about when refitting the donk, swingarm etc ;) anyway a night spent sanding and cleaning each side. A night to paint the frame and the rest was cleaned repaired replaced and repainted before refitting..easy stuff..at the old detailing job I had this type of thing was expected within a week..usually they got their wish as parts not supplied were simply ordered in. Wish I could do that now!
Tim, I don't believe I'll be needing the pipe as this one turned out pretty good and it's only really got 1 ding just behind the footpeg. I do need the stinger bit but I wouldn't pull apart a complete pipe to get it cause it's always the bit that's missing. Thanks a squillion for the offer and if ever you really really feel the need to lose it I would take it for future projects, you see I don't plan on stopping at one of these beasties as I've probably enough to do another if a roller of some type comes along ;)
Lastly sorry for the thread hi-jack but all the while it keeps me remembering I need to look for something on the weekend for the Yuma TS250 this thread started off with ;)
-
okay I've finally started on my TS/TM250 Vinduro project and here's what's happening so far (not a lot! :D) anyway it sports PE250 lower triple, RM400C top triple, DR500 36mm forks, '84 XR Honda headlight and nice off white/vomit colored UFO plastics that WILL clean up sufficiently ;) Was going to run TM chassis but eh, a downpipe would never survive and the TS chassis has a better lifting loop at the rear. Thinking of running RL250 rear and a conical hub TS185ER front wheel to reduce the unsprung weight dramatically while still retaining the speedo drive. The engine will be TS250 bottom end inside TM cases with the TM top end, carb, air filter and ignition. On the hunt for a decent pipe or I'll simply make do with the stock item till something betterer turns up. Lights will be a 12 volt dry cell rechargable total loss system simply because it's the easiest and cheapest as I already have the battery ;D

stay tuned... :)

L or M model Donor Doc ?
Never had a proplem with the savage other than it being too damn heavy and low and the odd front end wash out and... that damn plastic nuetral swtch cover that shattered as soon as the chain derailed.
ended up making one out of silastic ;)
-
For some reason I'd missed this thread. Nice little 100 Doc. It's got me buggered how you can do these things so quickly. I alocate a year per bike and always find myself behind the 8 ball after about 6 months. Good work old chum! ;)
-
Yeah, well done Doc. I'm with Firko, no idea how you do it. I've been going for about 2 months now on my IT and as far as I can see I've errr... cleaned one sidecover, wirebrushed a few bits and pieces and ummm... painted the footpegs. Vinduros 2010, maybe...
-
The bloke runs on caffeine I'm sure , How the hell you pump them out that quick baffles me no end
I'm in the Firko - Graeme sernario , lucky if i get 1 bike finished a year :)

Doc now that's thrown a spanner in the works for me, ;D as I'm still trying to see the difference of the TM and TS, I just gotta remember the headlight thing. How do you keep all this stuff in your brain, truly amazing. :o

Reckon ya gotta compromise with your wife/partner and work with them suzukis on the kitchen table. ;)

thanks for the kind comments peeps but my biggest asset is the spares I have to play with and they are near all oddball Suzuki spares so I don't have to break the bank to own them. I usually only start a project when I have collected enough parts to go 90% or more and this could be giving the impression things are done in zealous haste. Fact is I could have been collecting bits for years as in the case for the TM/TS250 project. I think I started collecting bits for this bike in late 2006 when I was given a partial roller (not the frame pictured). I don't have enough space to have more than 1 'real' project on the go at any given time and this too could be part of the secret..doing just 1 at a time. (mini's excluded as they can be done in the space equivilent to a postage stamp ;D) As for keeping it all in my head 247 it all comes from nothing but trial and error, neccessity being the mother of invention if I can't afford to buy one I try and build something comparable instead ;D Usually the hands on experience details remain in the brain where as things I read at best only get partially comprehended and at worst totally forgotten ??? The biggest mistakes are the best lessons and I made plenty from the age of 13 or 14 ::) Not sure if there are many rules and regs for Vinduro but regardless, being the 'seemingly' non conformist I am :P I be heading back to my grassroots and this bike will to be built to suit my own taste not a rule book :)
The little TS is even more complete now with the addition of indicators and a bit of a tidy up under the hood 8) no resto but it's tidy. Blinkers maybe an item that rarely lasted a nano second on any bikes I've owned previously but these days they do sorta complete the picture..a sure sign I must be old :( :D

I do have the mirrors also but I can't get it in and out the door with them fitted ::)
oh, and I dont work on the bikes inside, my wife/partner simply wouldn't have it..if I had one to dictate such matters that is ;) :D
-
Good for you Doc the little Bluey looks spiffy.Congrats to ya 8)
Well I still say "house works suxs", :-\
I'd rather be in the shed :'( most times I am,
suppose someone has to feed the lads to who keep the spirit of the era alive.
Women's work is never done ;)
-
what forks are on your very first 2 photos Roger?
-
Not sure if there are many rules and regs for Vinduro
I think that your bike would be more than eligible!
Tex
-
Something interesting for those people thinking of using TS frames. Compared to a '74 TM250 frame the '73 TS250 item weighs in just 300g more. Tidy up the frame by removing the few unwanted TS tabs and brackets and an undisputed fact is the TS chassis is actually lighter than a TM250 frame. Same as the 125's. The steel rear rim weighs 2440g and the alloy equivelant weighs just 1700g so ditch the steel rims while you're at it! Be nice to get the complete bike below 95kg but not sure if this will happen..can only try ;D
-
Not sure Leith, they are Suzuki, but I don't know what they're off, just a pair from my stockpile !
Roger
-
possible Dr 400- 500 fork tubes thru Pe triples ??? at a guess
-
Dont think so..........any DR forks I've had were a lot shorter........I'll have a good look when I get a chance and try and work out what they are.
Roger
-
I'd take a guess and say PE250B for the forks and lower clamp and '78 RM125/250/400 for the top clamp. What sort of fork caps does it have, normal, aircaps or the rubber plugged square hole type caps? Could be DR500 they do look very similar and they did have fair travel..the cap type should near solve the puzzle ;)
-
latest trivial dribble, just weighed a bare '76 TS250A frame and it's lighter than both the '74 TM and the early TS. Only by 50g or so but eh, there is still the excess lugs and brackets to be removed so the difference will only increase as the weight comes off. Doesn't make a zac of difference in the real world but I have always been curious ;)
-
i think those forks might be 80-82 TS 250 ER but wiht black painted lower sliders if they are 36mm
-
The forks and trees are from the same bike, they measure approx. 830 from axle centre to fork top,are 36 mm dia.and have square holes in the top............maybe they are DR???
Roger
-
they are DR-S model, SP370, TS250ER or PE 250 B. its one of those for sure and i think all those forks are pretty much the same anyway, so thats basically what i wanted to know
actually they are not PE 250 B because they have the low mount fender/fork brace lugs on the sliders. must be TS 250 or SP/DR. triples look like RM 250- T........ but not as they are 36mm
-
The triples are RM125/250/400C. If they were T model they'd be 38mm. The forks after closer inspection I'd say are the TS250 or DR as the PE250 used clamps to secure the fork boots. I spent all weekend rubbing back then splashing some black over the frame and polishing the triples. Maybe a waste of a weekend but in my eyes, excepting the wheels, it's the worst/biggest part of the job done. Decided to leave all the frame tabs intact 'just incase' but I'm still working on keeping it under 95kgs. Decided to ditch the leading axle front end also and retain the TS forks for now but in changing my mind like an old woman I'm not sure what front end will go on :-\ my mind tells me XL250 Motosport forks and wheel but this will require finding a TM250 or RM125S/M steering stem so once again I am on the hunt for the said stem ::) doesn't look anything now and it certainly won't be of show quality when finished but sentimentality is playing a big part in building a bike I owned and loved when I was 16 ;)
-
ahh silly me, i knew they were 38, its just that i kept having 36mm in my head, but i didnt actually say they were RM-T just that they looked like those ;D
