Title: 4robs is finished
Post by: 4RoBs on November 25, 2008, 09:39:08 pm
My shed burnt to the ground this afternoon. We lost everything in it. The kids bikes, my SWM and KTM collection, the TLRs I just found. The moulds for VMX and Trials rubber bits, the irreplaceable parts that all you good folk had sent me, all the machinery, all the tools, tractor, float, camper,.........Not sure what to do or say, I'm so sorry for losing your parts....no insurance for urethane fires......

Sorry to hear that Rob.

Hopefully no one was hurt and you can salvage somethings out of this?

The few parts I can no longer get from you pale into insignificance against what you have lost.
If you ever restart the business I'll be sending you parts for samples again, and paying in advance.

All the best

Brent

Bad news, Rob. Tim's been through it, I've been through it too and there will be an upside, I'm sure.
Probably not easy, but think of how much worse it could have been. Nobody was hurt.
Ignore the bad stuff and concentrate on the good. For me it was being away and having the 2 most expensive bikes with me. Plus my insurance company were excellent and even paid enough for the old riding gear to buy another bike for my step son.   :)  (Sounds like you may not have that luxury though)
In the end I lost some stuff, but it sure was fun setting up a new workshop from scratch.
Best of luck with it mate.

That is bad news, another of our worst fears.
You must be devastated, I know at this stage of my life I doubt I could rebuild all my jigs & notes.

For what it's worth you don't need to worry about the 1 sample of mine that you had.

Hope you find a Phoenix in their somewhere.

I just got off the phone to an emotional Rob and the guy is absolutely shattered. He has lost everything. He has been living in a shed with his family while he builds a house and EVERYTHING HE OWNED of any value was in the workshop that burnt down, un-insured.
He is more than aware of the amount of items of value owned by other people and is deeply concerned. The one thing I'd love to find is the part that Leith has lost so I can shove it up his arse, Rob would really like to thank you for your compassion mate

I don't know Rob and I haven't brought his product, but I knew him by his reputation here on the forum and in VMX general. He was obviously one of the 'good guys' and didn't deserve any crap in his live let alone this devistation.

Hang tuff Rob, you're a good guy and good karma is coming your way even if you can't quite see it at thew moment.

I'm very sorry to hear this Rob. We never met but you indirectly supplied some rubber bits for me that I never thanked you for. I hope that you can rise above this low point in your life and eventually get back on deck. Don't even worry about customer parts. Any decent man would fully understand and let it slide.

did you loose my my nos PE chain rubber flap? oh nooooo  i cant belive it. i guess i wont be the only one though.

My jaw dropped when I read the above post from Leith. I have to agree with Magoo and the others that you've displayed the most heartless and selfish post I've ever seen. I hope every PE chain rubber flap dissapears from this earth just to fork you over. >:(

i might be wrong here and usually are but i dont read his post in a nasty way.  i have fell into the trap before of misinterpreting SMS and this could be the same thing.  The "ooh no" part just sounds like he is saying tounge in cheek its gone.   And just maybe the other bit about customers he is hoping he cover the cost of those pre paid sales orders already in the system ?

I have no idea what leith intentions where but sometimes stuff can be mis-read, thats all.  :-\

Rob, I guess what we are all trying to say really is we are sorry about the loss and that we hope your dreams and life can be rebuilt and the peripherals associated with the loss dont impact to much ( loans, mortgage, stock accounts etc) you know all the stuff that goes along with it.

Bit like a death in the family somtimes it not just the loss itself but all the other crap you have to go through that gets you down and makes it hard.

If there is anything that the forum can do to help, ask,  i know there are a lot of good folk on here only to willing to give you a hand up, and help get you over this patch.

Good luck, keep positive and ask for help if you need it .

I've never met Rob but he's done work for me in the past and I can only thank him for his big contribution to our little sport. I can back Oldschools point that "stuff" can be replaced but your family is alive and with you and that can't be replaced. I'd like to think that our small community can in some way chip in to help Rob out of this horrible situation. I know that whatever is done can't replace the possessions and income that went up in smoke but surely a whip around amongst the vintage community would be a good place to start. Any ideas guys?

Very good point, Alison.
I'd like to help them have some sort of Christmas at least.
I don't know Rob personally either, but I can't imagine him chiming in here with 'Here's my bank details, send away........"
So does anyone who has dealt with him know if he's got a Pay Pal account??

P.S. I do know Leith and I'd be pretty sure his post wasn't meant in the way it came across.

Yep I had some 84 CR chain sliders to pick up from him so would still like to pay for them and a bit more to help ease what must be a difficult time.

Rob let use know to which account we can send money.

Also if I can help in any other way call me when you can.

For what it's worth to poor Rob and his family my thoughts are with you buddy.

Given my job as a firefighter / Station Commander with the NSWFB I see and talk to people first hand on a regular basis who have lost their possessions to the ravishes of fire, and only those who have experienced it can fully understand the sense of total loss these families face.

Given my other work and a shed FULL of machinery, tools (toolmaking, engineering mechanics etc etc) and bikes, parts etc I wouldn't know where to start but Walters advice is apt - doors will open and I trust you all were unhurt which is the main thing.

Does anyone know how to set up a collection fund?

As members of the motorcycling fraternity it's time to help Rob out. We all shell out silly money at times for bits and pieces and rely on guys like Rob to supply long forgotten so I'm up to give the can a bloody good kick if one is available.

I'm with Magoo re "Leith" who certainly had his insensitive selfish prick hat on when he made that post.

Leith - just a suggestion mate - post an apology as I am sure it was something you surely didn't mean (did you?)

Rob, if you are reading this cover everything with as much WD40 as you can spare and get things undercover where possible.

Good luck Rob and firmly take hold of any hand that is offered in help.

so sorry to hear of your losses Rob, the main thing is that yourself and family are ok.

I also agree the VMX community CAN do something, i think i can arrange for donations to be sent to the QVMX club on behalf of Rob to be forwarded to him by Christmas, lets say everybody gets on board and we say in 2 weeks time so they have it spend before hand.

Cheers

Funny thing about Rob. When I was talking to him this morning, the guy was very emotional wondering how he repay everyone else who had lost stuff in the fire. I had stuff up there, as did quite a few others, some with many thousands of dollars worth.
I'm happy to send some money under the proviso that he uses it for himself and his family to get back on track. I'm not interested in the stuff I lost, we can all share the pain just a little to help a really good, honest bloke and his family out of a shit time.
My old mate Chivo had exactly the same thing happen to him a few months ago and at the time the future looked bleak, but with a good network of mates and supporters he's coming out the other side slowly. The same will happen to you Rob.

Pretty sure Leith's post was a little mis-interpreted guys. Curiosity about losing a rare item makes one ask such questions but sadly the timing was a little off :-\ Rob is damn nice bloke and the loss of other peeps parts probably hurts him more than the loss of his business and fire itself. Ease up and keep the aid coming guys, in such a terrible time this is brilliant and somethng which will make not only Rob feel a little better but it'll do your inner self the world of good also ;) open your wallet, beat off the moths and do something decent. I don't have much but PayPal is my next port of call :-\ I honestly can't imagine how it would feel and bloody awful doesn't even scratch the surface.

im not sure what to say other than that I am very sorry and that my post wasn’t intended to sound like it did. My appoligies to who I may offended. I have witnesed first hand what fire can do and how it can destroy a bike just like that, but it would not be as bad as loosing a home & business.. As for the loss of my part, well I am over it now, there is no point thinking about it as its un-replaceable and the more you think about it it wont make it come back. As people have said there are much worser losses in life. i was very worried about letting it out of my sight but took the risk to send it to my friend in QLD to pass it onto Rob, so the reason i was so shocked was that i could not believe it was gone.
And once again, my sincere apologies to Rob and his family. Its unfortunate that with forums things can either not come out sounding as you thought they would and can be mis interpreted. i was just as shocked as everyone else.
SORRY

Hi Rob, never heard of you or met before but, I bet I have one of your products on one of my bikes, I will say this to you though it may not make sense right now though...If you were caught in that fire, and you were in a near death experience you would have traded everything you own to spend just one more day with your family, as luck has it you will get to spend the rest of your life with them.

It's all how you look at life, if your cup is full its useless, if its empty it can be used for many things......

Rob....A donation is on the way from me personally and a fair bit more is forthcoming on behalf of the Klub Kevlar old farts after we have a whip around. I know it sounds a little trite at the moment Rob but we'd like you and your family to be our guests in the Kevlar Kompound at CD6. Seeing that you probably won't have anything to ride after the fire, you have our bikes at your disposal for the duration of the event. As well, a soothing Kevlar Margarita or two, a gourmet sausage sanga and a bowl of Chili and a bit of fun will hopefully help ease the hurt just that little bit.

How are you fixed for pressys for the kids for Christmas? How old are they mate?

Firko, are going to pull some strings with your mate at the North Pole?
I've been thinking. I know, I know, I'm not very good at it, but I've decided to get a Vintage Dirt Bike show and shine going on Sunday 14th December which will be a fundraiser for Rob. I'm thinking sausage sizzle, beer to sell, a few raffles and anything else we can think of. I'm happy to run it from my place (I've got about 10 acres of sporting fields behind me). There's a carpark we can use and a barbie to cook on. Who's up for it?
Title: Re: 4robs is finished

My family and I are completely overwhelmed. We will do whatever we can to thank everyone of you. I have quickly skimmed through the last 24 hours posts but got to the point of not being able to see the screen for tears. Thank you all so much.

I've just finished kicking my kids buts. After our last ride at the twinshock masters they left the riding gear where they shouldn't have. And because they didn't put it away it was saved. We all have boots, pants and helmets. How can I ever make them put anything away again?

I want to repay the kindness somehow. I have organised a home for the SWM bits and pieces that may still be useful - there is now only one Jumbo trials bike left in the county so that was an easy decision. I want to give the KTM pieces to someone who will preserve them. Frames, gear sets, kick starters and the like. They will need emergency care of some sort - I posted in the tech section looking for advice. Just ask and they are yours.

Same goes for my recently aquired TLRs. I'll post on trials.com.au for someone, but I have someone in mind if he'll take them.

There is a YZ80e frame and other steel bits. My boys rode it at QVMX breakups so they were era correct. I know the steel in them was never good, and will probably be worse now. But I'll put it aside for anyone who wants it.

Thanks club kevlar. We'll take you up on that offer.

Firko my boys are Tom 10 and James 12. They are trials champions and are single minded. I try to keep them in up to date bikes, although we hadn't been able to for the last couple of years. I recently sold my trials bike to get an 09 Gas Gas 125 for James (He was on an 04 Beta 125 and it was his turn). Although he rode it at the Aussie Titles in October his Mum and I were going to present it to him after he finished primary school with good grades and behaviour. So he has worked on and cleaned it and serviced but not been able to ride it. He has tried so hard. This was going to be the first time they had their machines for the summer holidays. They had a practice schedule planned and training from coaches.

I will do whatever I can to get them new bikes for next season.

Rob

Hey Rob,

I just checked out your website and OMG !!! However - what has happened has happened and I hope I can help.

As part of 'Operation Phoenix' please contact me off forum if you wish re moulds etc if you think they are in any way salvageable. I can see a good use for the new water/vapour blaster that I will have in mid January - just get everything soaked in oil in between NOW and I am sure someone on the forum could truck em back and forth for ya !!! If they are reasonable lumps of steel they should not be too affected at all.

Cheers mate.

Magoo..Unfortunately I'll be in Adelaide that weekend but I'll talk to Comrades Jones and Phipps to see if they can hoist the KK flag at your bikeshow gig. I'll talk to you via landline over the next couple of days to see what assistance we can throw at you.

No wuckers Santa, I mean Firko.
I've actually been contacted by a KTM big knob who wants to remain anonymous, and he has donated a shit load of KTM umbrellas, posters, t shirts and all sorts of other stuff to be raffled. Also, some bloke over there named Jeff something or other (Leisk) will be signing some bits and pieces of real value to raffle as well. This will not only be a great way of helping a fellow VMXer in need, but will be a shit load of fun too.

spoke to rob today he is a good mate
and he is obviously shattered about the fire
he was all set up for a big year next year
but now its all gone :(
he told me he moved out to the farm for his kids to ride and friends
but he has lost that much that he might have to
move back to suburbia
keep the funds going and if anyone thinks of
anything else we can do then post it on the forum
its gunna be tough but i reckon the family will pull through this setback

Hi Rob,
Keep your chin up mate, it will only get better. As you can see you have a lot of friends [some of whom you have never met] who will stand behind you.

I don't have PayPal so a cheque is in the mail today - and as Magoo said, make sure you spend it on your family and not on replacing somebodies part.

Magoo, you are a bloody legend [as you have told me, over and over again]. Sunday the 14th sounds like a great day for the VMX Community to get together and raise some additional funds. Come on guys…

Magoo that sounds like an awesome idea.

Count me in, will try and get some Motorex for the raffle.

Hope all the Sydney side VMX guys will support it, as all the proceeds will go to Rob

Cheers Damo

Hey Rob - I just checked out the pictures on the 4robs website and can understand now what you mean!

Has there been a 'fire cause and determination' carried out or was the cause of the fire straight forward?

As a firey I see this very often but as the victim it is another thing altogether. What most people do is begin sorting almost immediately as it can be a good way of moving on especially when you find the 'little things' that give you a chuckle etc.

I hope you have had a chance to start protecting the moulds from further corrosion issues - I was thinking about that and perhaps the dunk in old oil might be the quickest and cheapest way to go.

As for the rest I guess a deal with the nearest scrap dealer should have the site cleaned out pretty quickly with minimum cost to you guys as many will pay the cost of the salvage of the steel structures etc and offset it against any tonnage they would otherwise pay and then it's off to China with it to make their shitty 50's!

Rebuild and keep going mate !!!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For everyone else out there take Rob's situation as a warning to us all. I intend reviewing my workshop and how things are stored etc and advise everyone else to do the same. Likewise with your houses make sure at least one working smoke alarm is fitted and always have an evacuation plan taking into account different escape routes for different situations. If you have deadlocks fitted either do not deadlock them when you are inside or if you must ensure that the key is IN the lock - until you have worked in a smoke filled room you have no idea how hard it is to a) find keys b) find the door c) locate the locks, operate the key and evacuate to safety.

Hey Rob

as had as it is you have to get rid of the goodbye from the web page.

Trying to remain positive is very difficult but you have to beleive that there is some light, dont write yourself off just yet; with the family that is VMX behind you and the determination that got you to where you were before you will recover.

If you need a bike for the nats, if you need 3 there there for you to ride let me know its an offer that any of the guys would have for you, the other stuff will come bact to you in time.

All the best\

Hey Rob - I just checked out the pictures on the 4robs website and can understand now what you mean!

Has there been a 'fire cause and determination' carried out or was the cause of the fire straight forward?

Yes Dave. No conclusive point of origen or ignition source. Too much damage too quickly and too many variables. It was described as an catastrophic start and basically all over in less than half an hour. I reckon the gas bottle had a lot to do with it, but like I said there is not enough left to be sure.

I hope you have had a chance to start protecting the moulds from further corrosion issues - I was thinking about that and perhaps the dunk in old oil might be the quickest and cheapest way to go.

Dave the moulds are all gone. They were made of urethane and were burnt - one of the pictures is what is left of the moulds and the shelving they were organised on. That is the biggest hurdle to restart. No moulds, no income, no business. It took six years to get 250 moulds. And I need that many to make a real go of it. I'll find something to do, but I can't begin to imagine how it could be making parts again.

DT you are right, good bye is too final. I'll get it off. I am heading in the right direction. I have help, I have assistance from lots and lots of folks. I am learning to accept the offers of help and the donations and gifts - that was hard for me as we are independant and  have nearly always done everything ourselves. As a family we have a plan evolving and we reckon with a bit of time we'll make progress.

Thank you again

Rob

Hi Rob,

i appreciate the time it must take to make a mould, but i am sure we can all organise to lend you stuff to start to make moulds again. i am happy to lend you anything i have to help out. i have a few Hondas so they must be a popular item to sell i would reckon.

its early days but i am sure after the initial shock of what has happened has settled you can revisit where you want to go forward.

Rob,

Its heart-wrenching reading about this. "Devastating" doesn't even begin to describe it. Our hearts go out to you & yr family. I have often dreaded returning home to find everything burnt out - & hope & pray it never happens. It makes one stop & think - what really is important in life.

It sounds trite to remember the saying, "every cloud has a silver lining" but it is true. Tragedies often bring out the best in people - those around us. We never know what is just 'around the corner' for us - for better or for worse. We trust that something better is just around the corner for you now.

Wise words from firey Dave Mac too. Appreciated, Dave.

And I got this too from the yanks:

"Are you kidding me? He'll be back. First off, he built it by hand
from nothing to what it was before the fire. Second off, he's
Australian, ferchrissakes. Those guys are worse than the brits for
when it comes to getting their a**es beat and not knowing when to
give up.

He'll be back.

Keep sending him the emails."

Rightoh, give me a couple of days to make a list of what I need. It'll be a virtual list for anyone to set up a similar thing, but I reckon no one else would be dumb enough. My wife and family are behind me, as are a heap of folks around the world. If we can get it backed somehow I'll get 4robs running again. It's a big ask.....

Hey Rob,
Gotta love those crazy Yanks, they really have a way with words [just like their President].

Judging by some of your other posts [especially the one about how to remove powder coating  :D  :D  :D] your sense of humour is returning, but make sure you take the time to decide what you really want to do for yourself and your family. If that means the return of 4Robs then that would be fantastic for the VMX and Trials communities.

Have a good one

Hi Rob,

Hope all is well. One good turn deserves another, Paypal sent.

Re: Robs Replica Rubber Reproduction - Highly Recommended supplier

i have been meaning to do this for awhile.

I needed some chain sliders and had a NOS item (no longer available) and emailed Rob for a price and turnaround time. he quoted $25 (he had to make a mould of my item as well). very good value i reckon so i said i will take 2 as well as return of my NOS item.

well after a week or so Rob informed me he had done the mould and would make the sliders when he had time, i asked him to tell me how to pay him and then they turned up in the next week in excellant condition.

I emailed him back about payment and he said we are square. i felt guilty as it has cost him time and money and return postage but he would not take payment.

i am by no means suggesting that he will do this with every one but i am most impressed and highly recommend Robs for Quality and service.

The money was more of a helping hand to a family that has lost all of their possessions , not to get his business up and running again. I do hope he can get it going again as it was an invaluable service  ( i had yet to use his services myself).
I read that the show to raise money had to be postponed, must be in another thread.

I caught a rag on fire in the shed today and thought about this again............  :D

Jeeessuuusssss Tony, it's not farkin funny..... I hope you had a fire extinguisher handy, or at least a full bladder  ;D

So how about an update. Thanks to all you guys and gals here we had a fantastic christmas and new year when it could have been so miserable. The charity also meant I could spend a decent amount of time with family and friends - the first time in a very long time. It really made a difference knowing that so many folks cared. VMX247 and family sent a little gift - a flip over of motivational sayings. Thanks Alisen, we love it and we each have our favourites. The boys flip them every day. I didn't mean to single anyone out as everyones gift was so helpful, but I guess it just takes a girls touch.  A bunch of friends from way back arrived from all over and we ended up having new years on two seperate nights and three days - we have almost recovered. I've gone off beer for a while, especially after magoos visit..........

We didn't lose everything in the fire. We had most of the necessities of life in a mates little house in town - summer time clothes, toothbrushes, cooking gear, some of the kids trophies, a few pictures and photos and some basic furniture. But we did lose an awful lot of gear, and depending on what you value your old KTM's, SWM's and old Hondas at, the total is something over 400,000 dollars. Bikes and riding gear, horse gear, our tinnie outboard and fishing gear, farming gear, our books (thousands of them), my environmental consulting gear and laboratory instruments, our good furniture, most of our photographs, all the good plates and cutlery, knick knacks and mementoes - from kitchen to workshop types, a mountain of plumbing, electrical and building stuff, a bolt collection (you know - all the odd witworth sizes), and not to mention the tools of trade and stock. We keep remembering extra stuff all the time.....

But it all really means nothing compared to what we gained -an unbelievable sense of the caring nature of people.  Wow. More than enough to get going with.

So we have got going. We'll keep the farm because that is the dream. We'll build a home there one day. We have a plan to get us back up and running - it will mean some risk, but that won't be the first time. We'll get there.

As far as 4RoBs goes, yes I will start again. I need about 150,000 dollars to build a new shed and stock it with tools and equipment. I need a year of just making moulds to get back to a position where it can support me. I just can't see that happening. Instead I'll build it up slowly again, like I did the first time. Part of our plan involves buying a house block with a little 6 x 3 shed on it. That'll be the 4RoBs manufacturing shed. And I'll keep the finished parts (and all our other gear) some where else just in case!  I'll probably start with simple parts I need to get my own projects running (so if you need something better make sure I have one of those bikes in the collection - hint hint  ;) ). But it will be slow because I now have a real job four days a week - doing IT and network stuff at a school. And it doesn't pay anywhere near as good as the consulting work I did to support 4RoBs the first time. But we'll get there.

Thank you all again, you're amazing.

Thanks so much for the update, Rob.
Great to hear things are going ok and that you have plans for the future and are seeing positives out of this.  ;D
Also great to hear that you had a decent Christmas.
Yes, always have a fire extinguisher on hand but also easier when you're actually there and there to catch it early. Unlike last time, when I was away and my wife only discovered the fire once it was all beyond saving...........  :-\
Anyway Rob, keep it up and keep us posted.  :)

I managed to crash my PE repeatedly all this week (note to self, purchase body armour) - the original factory rubbers are all torn and tattered beyond saving. The 4Robs replacement is still sitting there in perfect condition, despite hitting the deck numerous times. Bloody brilliant. Luckily I have more and will replace all the others with those received from 4Robs prior to the fire.

I am heavily bruised and battered - Rob's product is still mint.  What more recommendation can I give!!!  Let's hope he can get back into business.
