Front end is basically a Satria hatchback with a ute rear end, they are like jap cars in the early eighties starting to get a good reputation and definitely not as shit as they used to be but still room for improvement. They remind me of when the first Subaru Brumbies came out.

The engine for the proton ute is from the early mitsubishi colts 1500 and proton bought Lotus out so they had lotus help design the ute. the ute will take 550kg so it should carry three bikes easy  :-\ jimson

Quite e few round here ,sold out of Bendigo. Farmers I know that have bought one, are happy with the little buggers and  well shit they don't usually treat utes with kid gloves.

the proton company  have the design licence for mitsubishi  and the satria and so on models reflect the previos years mitsubishi JDM models.
was abit of political hoo haaa surrounding the company as the companies chairman is  the son of  a now ex president who was embroiled in many a shady dealings  and tis rumoured that the proton company was given a lot of illegal adavantages  with taxation and such.

One of these advantages was  as would be expected  monetary gains which assisted them in getting lotus to redesign the lotus chassis .
not   too bad a vehicle for a smallish company as its basically a better made last years mitsubishi.

Are they long enough to fit more than one bike? An XF Falcon needs the tail-gate down to fit more than one bike in, so I wonder if a Proton is long enough even with the tail-gate down?

Yeah, they're basically the old Mistu Mirage (the shape before the one were got here), with a ute rear on 'em. A 1.8 EFI conversion from a Lancer sedan would be a good move...

If the Hyundais are anything to go by, mechanically they're every bit as good as a jap car, but (after several years) they'll be let down by things like crap interior fabric and fragile door hnadles and stuff.

You got the wrong year Ford ute. Go back to the ones with steel doorhandles and vent windows.

As a fellow XF ute owner, I know the pain! At least replacements are only $15 at Supercheap.

Manual box, Gaz?
If my sources are correct, it should be the same as any 1600cc Mitsu/Hyundai/Proton. Let me know if you can't get one cheap.

zactly the same as an Excel. Pretty good little thing and will be an icon just the same as Datto 1200. Try to find one of them now.
Exhaust upgrades do them well, extractors and a nice free flow system will give it +10%. Better on fuel too.
Just watch which g/box you get. We have had to get 2 or 3 sometimes from the wreckers....all with small variations. Mostly where the clutch fork pivot goes.

The good old jumbuck sitting at a set of traffic lights & saw these 7 pallets for free & I need to build a wall in the shed so 7 pallets 2 x 2 metres will do the job lined with corrugated iron. The jumbuck has been a great little workhorse over the years. Jimson

G'day viewers, We'll I'm sad to say the jumbuck is dead, hit while parked on the side of the road & now it's a ride off. It had a hard life and I know a lot if people don't give them much credit, but for me it worked well & kept going even know it was overloaded & being flogged... Jimson

Bugger, did they own up or do a runner on you?
Title: Re: Proton ute
Post by: jimson on May 03, 2017, 11:13:31 pm
Yeah, it was parked outside my house & a woman in her 60s hit it. She said she lent down to pick something up, but I think she was on her phone... I was in the shed & heard a bang & came outside to see the jumbuck pushed up over the gutter....

That's a bummer Jimson. I hope she is insured?

I personally think they are a fantastic little thing.
An Ex had a 1.6 sedan for a while,,,I had a ball flogging it,,,like driving a slot car I thought and dirt cheap to run.
I thought they were very underrated.

That,s a bugger. I brought one 18 months ago, 2010, bronze and yes it had only done 15,650 ks from new. Great little ute and still drive like new. The car yard where he was going to trade it offered $3000, so i snapped it up.

A bit like a grown-up mighty boy (Suzuki)They were a great step up from a dinky toy.
You all have me thinking of getting one for our little farm, sound better than a 4wheeler.
