Is there one ? If so what is it.
So far Vandy's is my favourite 789.

When i went to B grade, i could choose a B grade number which they all start with '0'. I was told what was available and chose 090. On the older girls i drop to 90 as it gets a bit cramped on those oval plates, plus i save about $3 in numbers per bike :D

:D Just thinking about this the other day.
When I chose mine, I was basically told "pick a number and we'll tell you if its available".
So I stopped and thought how to minimise the chances of there being a conflict:
I knew that all the single digit numbers would be taken.
I figured that lots of the two-digit numbers would also be taken.
Hillclimbs and Supersprints taught me that numbers that can be made with electrical tape are the first to go: 1, 7, 4.
Then I thought "Are there any three digit numbers that don't use 1,4, or 7, that I have some/any connection to.
I happened to be standing next to my much-loved 1974 Mazda 808 at the time...
Eureka! 808 is the number!
Then I figured that the number 808 takes up too much room on an old oval number plate.
So I went for the 808's European name: 818.
And that's how I chose my number (and a probably unwanted insight into the mind of Nathan).
It's worked too, BTW - never had a problem with anyone else turning up to an event with the same number.
The worst part of building a new bike is cutting out all of those friken "8"s, though...

some people have registered historic numbers
so you cant use them
i remember going to the vintage nats in 2000 8)
and i had number 44 which i didnt know was don newells number
felt like an alien
thats the last time i used that number ::)
i just use number 9 which was my last a grade number i had in 1989
up here if you win the evo or pre85 championships you can wear the number one plate
i won the pre 85 this year but i dont know if i will run number 1
might feel a bit weird :-\

Had 111 for the last 2 years ( QLD ) then asked if I could have my old # back , sure enough she was available 90 . Its all good Brad as you'll be at the pointy end :) ;D

11 is my lucky number. I was wondering if the 2 digit thing is OK or 3 digit. 111 woould be OK. Is it for sale stew ;D ;D

On my old Honda CB750 powered sidecar I have 754 , :Not certain I know why.... ;) Cheers Tim

I'd say 888 would be a prick to cut out - can you imagine cutting 9 of 'em out. Then again I could borrow Nathan's template or even better get him to cut them for me. Lord know with the amount of practice he's had he should be an expert by now :P :P

And sometimes the licensing people get it wrong...
I asked for and received #27 (my boys birthday) as it was "available".
I'd no sooner received it than I noticed the #27 on Bert Cavell's bikes in my photos!
I spoke with Bert, the number has significance for him and he's had it for years - so I asked for #22 and got it.
For me #22 reminds of a time and a place long gone.
Paul Keating disbanded Perth based 22 Construction Squadron Royal Australian Engineers as part of the Federal Budget back in 1990.
Paradise was lost...
and as the others mentioned, I felt two digits fit better than three digits on oval plates - and the helmet.

I have just started numbering bikes by the order I bought them with the prefix W (W for Wiltec my Company name) Do not have a riding number 1 as this should be the Australian champ so have Wiltec 2 to 7 we ride at the moment (works for me as my brother also rides them so we don't have to carry our own number from bike to bike). Brad I thought you did the same thing as you must have more then 090 bikes by now ;) :D ;D and you are ready to brake the 100 mark with the three digits ;D ;D

Mine (42) has sentimental value for me, it was a number given to me in my very first MX race back in 1978 in the enduro class, which was open to all enduro bikes all capacities, and I managed a 1st 2nd and 2nd in the 3 motos i was stoked, I rode my IT175 to the track and took off the number plate, afterwards i put the plate back on and rode home through the sugar cane grinning from ear to ear, .. so its my luck number ( i think thats the last time i managed a position below 3rd :D)

When I got into VMX I chose 51 because that was my house number at the time. Since then we moved to Queensland and met Mr Evo500 who already uses number 51 on the exact same model bike as mine, coincidence!
Since Mark already has dibbs on 51 in QVMX I'm goung to change to my new three digit house number.

Why not choose 69 ? ??? It works for many people allover the world in every position ;D

i chose 999 because i just asked for it at the time i chose my ma numbr as a joke and ended up getting it ;D :D

oi!,leave #69 alone ;),when somebody (hello martin ;D) pinched my #66,so when informed what else was available in the 60's,couldn't believe no one was using it,bagged it bigtime,sailors delight eh!!, :P,

Me: Do you have any 2 digit numbers available?
Guy: Yep
Me: Whats the lowest one?
Guy: 57
Me: I'll have that one then
Guy: Yep

My first ACU issued number in 1966 was 501. After a very long break, I started using it again - I ride 3-4 times a year on a day licence, and so far haven't come up against one the same. Bloody hard to squeeze on those VB360 vertically mounted plates, though!!

#69 brings bad luck for rally cars.
But the real reason to not use it is because you've got to put up with the idiot bogans forever saying "Ha ha! *snigger* You're number sixty-nine! *snigger*". It gets old quickly.
(I have no problem with idiots or bogans, but both combined really tries my patience).

Funnily enough I didn't even think of that until after I scored the number.
I think his #22 was an American thing for their series.
Anyhoos, my hair's turning grey so young Chad can just get in line!

Within your club, you'll get to choose. Both clubs I've been involved with with give priority to existing members if two people want the same number.
If you go somewhere like the Nationals, and if there's a conflict, then the event organisers will allocate a new number to one of you. IIRC, at Coffs they asked what your preferred, and second choice numbers are. Of course, everyone's second choice number is their regular number with a digit removed because its dead simple.

Anybody who turns up to the Nats with the #1 on their bike, who isn't the defending champ, deserves to be laughed out of the place.
Edit: Isn't there a rule that says that only the defneding champ can ride with #1? And even if they don't (a la Rossi) then nobody else can use it?

Ok you are most likely correct. But I believe very few VMXers in Australasia would cynically laugh at or try to stop the true legend his proven place. ;)

hey Tony,
this threads 3 pages long and i'm only just reading it for the first time.
i like my #789 as well for many reasons and it came about while mucking around with my kids,
you know, "why was 6 scared of 7? cause....7 ate 9...
ok, so it's an old joke but hey...
and having a number like 7 at the beginning allows a small prefix letter like an "X" or "H" enough room on the small oval plates.
i also like 3 digit numbers as it fills up a number plate and makes it "look" busy although a number #1 would be nice one day.... oh to dream...
i applied for the #789 when i put my licsence application in and to my surprise i got it first go.
you'll have a better chance of getting your chosen number on your licsense if you nominate "classic moto~x" as your first choice of discipline.

It's all pretty informal for classic mx. Just request your number at the start of the year with a second preference. A few people run 3 digits down here in Vic, but not many.
For moderns, you just request a number when you get a licence:
C grade - ring up and get one
B grade - you'll get one when they send you the notice that you have been moved up a grade.
A grade - same thing.
My actual number is 555. I've been sitting on it for years.
I'm still waiting for Boagy to rock up with big fat custom No.1s, instead of those strips of electrical tape!

MY RACE NUMBER IS 145 .I RACED JUNIORS 1974-1977 THAT WAS MY NUMBER . RESTARTED 1996 145 WAS FREE

Sooo... Apart from all the cool stories on here ... I request a number with a second choice when I apply for my MA licence and it's (maybe) all good. My local club is very small (with the best natural terrain loam track in the whole world, but that a whole nother story) so I'm more than likely to get the number I want there. WTF does MA have to do with it ?? I'm still confused - obviosly I am a bit thick ::)

No, it's just a bit confusing when confronted with too much info.
Now it's been a year since I cast a shadow at their door so I'm a tad cloudy on the detail.
However, I remember going to the MA website and checking out the different types of licences.
Club only or National etc and selecting what I thought I would compete in.
You then have an idea of cost for your type of licence and it's important to get all the info.
You'll need a copy of your Club membership, two passport photos (signed by a JP) and a few other bits I forget.
But it's all on the MA website.
I then phoned the Qld MA office at Tivoli (the local office for me) and asked for an appointment (I think it cost an extra $20 to do the application over the counter).
Whilst on the phone I asked about race numbers and she checked on the computer for availability.
They're quite helpful. Just explain what sort of racing you're into and ask for advice.
So when I arrived I filled out the forms, she checked again for the few numbers I enquired after, I handed over the paperwork, paid my money and left with licence in hand - 15 minutes tops.
If you don't want to visit the office I suggest you phone and ask for your race number of choice.
It's all computerised these days so it's easy for the staff to check availability.
You can then mail your cheque and your licence will arrive in the mail.
I believe there's a window of a few weeks to send your money in when it's time for renewal.
If you miss this window (2 weeks I think) they can give your number to someone else.
and they do! It happened to me in '79...Pricks!

Next stop MA web site. Thanks again. Sorry for sounding like a dickhead, but the only blokes I know that race bikes are on here. Hopefully I'm not the only newbie and others will benefit from my stupid questions :-[. Apparently there are some things you are just supposed to know :-\.

Yeah, there are heaps of things like that. Don't tie yourself in knots over em - muddle through as best you can, don't try to pretend that you're an expert, and you'll be amazed at how much help you'll get.

When I started racing up here (7 years ago) we raced with our club membership #.
At the time they were up to 470 and I asked for 500 and got that. When I got my MA licence I applied for 500 and got that officially. But it's an MANT number, I'm not sure what would happen if I were interstate.
The reason for #500 is simple, I ride a 500 Yamaha.
Oh and my car rego is "VMX". A great birthday present from my lovely wife!

MA costs you $11 a year to retain/book your number in each catagory,vmx,Vintage DT,historic RR.Post Classic RR,etc,that way you can turn up (in your respective state that is!) knowing no wukkers with your race number,interstates a slight concern,but organisers do try to accommodate riding numbers,especially if it's a common number,but in different capacity/period classes , :P

Thanks ELSYZ. That makes it much simpler. I doubt I will ever get to a nationals, so its all too easy.
It's obviously easy to check who has what at the club.
