Paul - cheapest option I have seen is to crate the bike and the road freight - I was looking at getting some bikes from Perth to Tassie for the Nats and was quoted Perth to Launceston at $450 which I thought was good.  I think the company that quoted was Airroad Direct.  The bike crate I was quoted on was the larger Honda standard MX ones.
