What are the options for converting points ignition on the '72 GT80 into a CDI ignition? The bike will be converted to a GT80MX look alike so do not need the lights. Does the early YZ80A ignition fit (if it is CDI?)or is there an aftermarket alternative?
I look forward to hearing from anyone who has done this before or know where to get the parts. Thanks in advance to all.

I believe they ran points right up till mid 90s when deleted (MX80). In fact I never had trouble with them so did not try to change. But can see no reason why earliest YZ80 ignitions could not be adapted, You must be going to do a heap on the top end to make one of those docile little buggers go!!! I have fitted complete YZ80 B/C /D /E five speed internals into MX/GT80 cases ,it is a straight bolt in job! Tim 754

Thanks Tim. The bike is for my son, so it is not going to be a fire breather. I wanted to ditch the battery hence the question on the replacement ignition. I'll keep on looking.

You dont and never have needed a battery at all for the ignition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a points magneto setup ;) :). Battery and charge circuit were for the lights and road crap. :)
