Title: If you could...............
Post by: DJRacing on September 21, 2008, 05:18:17 pm
If you could only have just ONE bike, what would it be and why, including "werks" bikes or even a bike you have thought about making.

The horrible thought of this is, go out to the shed and have a look at all those bikes and decide which one is it, the one that rocks your boat enough to say   "if I could only ever have just the one bike it would be this one"

Good luck guys   ;)  ;D

I originally started this post with the words "Making a short list is easy", but as I started making that list, I realised that even culling down to three or five was hard...

I guess that if I was stuck with just one bike, it'd probably be a twin shock Husky WR400 - acceptable VMXer, and still a pretty good road-registerable enduro/trail-bike. Maybe an 84 KTM would do the job too. Or a complianced YZ250L like Brett Smith used to have.

But then again, there are a few bikes in my shed that I'd have a VERY difficult time parting with - the 94 TM125, the YZ125A, the YZ125X, the YZ250G, the DT250A that I've owned for more than half my life, etc... In reality, if it came down to it, my one bike would probably be one of those five.

I have thought about it, and out of the 39 bikes in the shed, I have thought of a few that I could probably part with if I realy had too. However, like a mother with her children, I just can't pick one bike and say to the others "Bye, I dont' love you any more". If it come to making the ultimate sacrifice to save a my bikes I would ask God (if I belived in him/her) to take me and leave my bike altogether in the shed.

I'm fickle, I change from week to week. At the moment I'm 'locked in' to finishing the Monty VB360. Effectively I have put all other bikes 'out of contention' at the moment.

It shouldn't be too much longer before I'll have something looking like....

I'm a man of simple tastes and I'm happy with what I've already got. I'd be happy however, to add this sweet Cheney B50 to the collection.

I already have  it My Honda 754 Vmx Sidecar, I built it !!! can change it whenever I feel the urge (Finances do play a part here I confess...) and hey it still is uniquely mine.  Maybe just maybe I could exchange it for a Hagon Alloy frame VMX sidecar or any supercharged Vincent HRD speedway sidecar.... Nope ! cancel those thoughts! what would I have to tinker with on those masterpieces??? Cheers Tim754

If I wanted to ride to the shops as well, a BSA 441 Victor special. If just for the dirt, can't go past  the looks & feel of an Ossa Stiletto 250 - though my VB360 is certainly growing on me.

That guy mboddy, he's weird. Who'd ride a TDR at a dirt track race? But I have ridden with him round Wakefield and that thing is seriously quick, and must be more so now with all the mods. And Mark is a good rider too, how he can get the corner speed he carries with that thing is anyone's guess...

As for my one and only, Geez. Too hard.

To race 'vintage', probably a Pre 85 Honda CR. I am not a Honda fan, but those things seem to be pretty good. Otherwise a YZ250G. This is being practical of course. If I could have any 'old' bike, I'm with asasin, I love the looks of Howerton's Suzuki.

Mind you, if I didn't want to race and just need an old dirtbike to haul out and look at and go for a ride, I'll have my 79 TT500F back please.

Yer, Kent's twin shock 79/80 250 or Everts water cooled twin shock RM125- circa 1980. CCM is right up there-like Banks and Airds rode with such grit- And a 77 AW,77 RC 500. But the RH250 of MR Robert from 1973/4 ,to me anyway, is very important and very beautiful to boot.

A ' 77 AW 250 with 326 conversion I reckon.  Mildly upgraded forks, adjustable shocks, the larger of the two fuel tanks and tidy paint job based around the red, black and orange off the German flag.

Yeah DJ, thats something to think about, without hesistation it's my type 981.4  CZ400. I wouldn't even trade her for some fancy ol' works bike either, that bike of mine is a good workhorse of a racer & looks IMHO good doing it. I can go forth this day with the satisfaction of I all need vmx wise exists here & now and in my shed.

Or a complianced YZ250L like Brett Smith used to have.

I saw only a few years ago a complianced YZ250S 86 on Ebay. It was one of 6 ever complianced by some mob in QLD and raced by not sure who back then.

The late Gaston Rahier's 1975-76 World Championship 125.

The second choice would be Johnny O'Mara's 1979 Mugen ME125.  The one that was run out of Al Baker's shop.

All of you guys who want a works bike as your only bike must be mad.

Sure it'd be great if you don't ride, or if you only ride National events, but the rest of the time it'd be torture....

"Nah, can come riding with you guys next weekend, the RH is too special for that".
"No, I'm giving Connondale a miss 'acuse I've been putting too many hours on the RC".
"Mate, I'd love to come riding with you, but the YZM's rod has only got a few hours life left in it, and I can't get get another one".
"Last race meet I dropped the CCM and the tank cost me $800 to fix".
Etc.

Come on Nat, get with the programme. If I can wish for a 'works' bike I can also wish for a 'works' supply of spares, a 'works' mechanic to fit them and fettle the bikes, and wish to have the 'works' riders skills to exploit the advantage ;D
