Title: Progress Photos
Post by: YZ250H on September 14, 2008, 02:04:57 pm
After a fair bit of bagging from some of the blokes on here about how long this thing is taking me ::), and because this Yamaha forum has been so slow I have decided to put up some progress photos.
I was going to leave it until I was finished, but as one of my fellow Yamaha owners pointed out - some of us may not last that long  ;D ;D ;D ;D.
So at the risk of exposing myself to more humiliation here goes.....  The front wheel is off 'cause I left the spacer in the "other workshop".
The bike is being assembled at home in possibly the worlds smallest workspace (  >:( >:( ).
Tank is still a work in progress - there was some very deep crazing, but it is going to come up well.
Bottom end of motor needs to be split again so I can add a circlip to the transmission and put the crank seals in the right way  :-[
Otherwise everything is painted and ready to put back together.

Remaining shopping list is :
Intake manifold from Rob at 4R's
Pipe from Retro Rocket
Side covers from XYZ (as VMX Plastocs are still a way off)
Cable saver number plate from DC plastics (Unless someone else has a better idea)

I am pretty happy with the results so far (even though it has taken me forever).
Thanks to all on here for sharing your knowledge.  I have done 90% of this with tips I have got from people on here, so thanks everyone - you know who you are.

Please excuse the crap in the background.

Thanks Guys.
Andrew,  I saved the photos of your bike from your thread ages ago and used it as inspiration for my resto.  If mine finishes up as good as yours mate I will be more than happy.  It is amazing how much motivation you get out of someone else posting progress picks.  Look how many views are in DJ's Noguchi thread :o :o.

DJ and Brent - get into those restos lads  :).
I am very happy with those excel rims DJ.  Despite what has been said about Vintage Iron (I think even you have had trouble) I was happy with the service and particularly happy with the price and exchange rate at the time.  The only thing I was cranky about is the fact that I wasted literally months of time trying to restore the Old DIDs - especially the back one.  A lesson well learnt there - if it is too far gone toss it and get something else.  I got front and rear drilled excels and a 125H seat landed on my doorstep for $AU469.  You can't complain about that.  Particularly after some prices I got from Oz.  But I don't want to start that debate again.

KB - one beer fridge is never enough mate.  There are 2 on the other wall  ;)  ;D

The only other thing I regret is not taking more before photos.  I do have some, but I'll put those up when I am finally finished.   Back to tank sanding now (I do have some before photos of that) - last day of holidays :'( :'(.

did the excels work with the standard spokes or did you get em made up mate
Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: YZ250H on September 18, 2008, 02:27:36 pm
standard spokes seemed to work OK caps.  I think the guy that did them asked what sort of spokes I was using - can't remember it was 5am  ::)
Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: evo550 on September 18, 2008, 04:11:17 pm
Caps,
Excel rims can be used, but they need to be redrilled to do it right, the angle of the spoke from the hub to rim is different between new (Disc) and old (Drum) hubs. I respoked a set of rims with new excel rims but could not get it trued and the spokes had a funny curve upon entering the rim, had the rims redrilled and all was good.

Post by: caps 999 on September 18, 2008, 04:21:28 pm
i know about the angle the problem ive haqd in the past is ive had to get oversize nipple as the stock nipples are too small for the holes in the aftermarket rims
Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: YZ250H on September 18, 2008, 04:45:32 pm
Not sure how much clearance they are supposed to have, but they look fine.  I had them drilled specifically for the bike.  The nipples aren't what I'd call loose in the holes.  I will try to take a close up.

,small problem the bushes in the swingarm seem to be ever so slighly long so the motor won't fit between.  Some thought required then back into it.

Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: YZ250H on May 17, 2009, 03:26:42 pm
Won't make CD6 unfortunately :'( - waiting on side covers from XYZ.  GMC is making me a pipe.
The main stumbling block is the boost bottle manifold.
I was going hard to make CD6, but have given up the ghost.
She was going to be unveiled at CD6, but will have to be on here instead.  She will be going to Proserpine in August.
Depending on XYZ (or preferably vintage plastics) I would say about a month.  I have kicked off the 50H and 125H restos already.  Can't be left without a project now can we ?
This one has taken me way too long, but know I have all the tools and knoledge I need to do the next ones much quicker.  It's all a learning experience for me
Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: mainline on May 17, 2009, 05:58:50 pm
c'mon you've still got a couple of weeks, they rebuild Bathurst wrecks overnight ;D Maybe you could bring all the bits to CD6 and we could finish it off there??

I know how it is though, there's always a couple of small bits that hold you up. I ended up buying a yellow US sidecover on my YZ and painting it white as there was just no other option. Speaking of which, it got started this arvo and taken on it's maiden voyage around ze front yard which was pretty bloody exciting.

As for the next project, I've sworn on my life I'll finish some stuff around the house before I start another, but you're right, the next one will be so much easier and quicker than the first.

keep us posted anyway.

That's why it has taken me so long mainline.  I have been trying to run a flower farm and renovate the house at the same time.  I have 3 kids under 4 as well.  Not that it is any excuse.  Well done on your resto too mainline.  She looks great.  I'm looking forward to riding mine.  Lord knows it has been a long time since I bought her home.
I did think about bringing it and all the bits, but started to worry when I thought about how much beer I drank at CD5  ::)

That's the 125H and it's the next cab off the rank.  I have been busy collecting NOS parts for that one since I piked it up from your joint, so I reaaaallyy hoping it goes faster than this one.  Got lots of things like bead blasters and stuff that make life sooo much easier too these days.  Took me a lot of time and buggerising around to work out the fact that if you are going to do it do it properly and get the right tool for the job.  I don't own paint stripper any more  8) and I don't have to sand my fingerprints off to polish alloy 8).

god knows how you get anything done with 3 young kids running around. I had my 4 yr old "helping" me yesterday, took me three times as long to get things done.

What's the boost bottle manifold problem? can you not find one?

Tony,
Bloody Beautifull!
keep up the good work mate and don't let the time factor bother you too much, it'll be well worth it when it's all done for sure.
now, this flower farm you mention, how many acres are we talking here Tony? :)
Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: YZ250H on May 18, 2009, 02:42:35 pm
Mainline,

I have 2 manifolds here - both of them have a crack in the tube where the boost bottle comes off.  I am going to have a crack at casting one of my own.  4Robs had made me one, but before I could pay for it and he could send it his shed burnt down - terrible thing that (for Rob).  I think he is concentrating on his KTM stuff now so ......  E74 was very generous and sent me one from a 490J, but unfortunately the tube is a different diameter.  I put a wanted ad in here for a sample to borrow that I can cast off, but no replies.  I can probably cast off one of the ones I have here, but a new one would be better.  I have searched extensively on the internet to no avail  :-\
I know one will come to me eventually, so I'm not that worried - I just wish it would hurry up ::).

Mick - flower farm is 5 acres - 3 acres under plastic in greenhouses.  My inlaws were running it for us, but they are moving away, so now it's for sale or rent  - in beautiful Walkamin FNQ.   Flowers are very labour intensive and took up a lot (all) of my time on week-ends for quite a few years.  Was to be retirement plan A, but alas it has not turned out that way.  Sort of a relief that I have stopped - you can only work flat out for so long.  Anyway now I have more time for riding and restos  ;D ;D 8)

It will all happen with time.  GMC has finished the pipe and it looks awesome.

Getting closer.  Apart from throttle cable and spark issues it's coming along well.  Found a before picture to compare with a current one.  Gives me a bit of motivation to keep going when you realise how far you have coma and how close you are to the end.  Sorry for the quality of the photos - I need some lessons from Ji Gantor.

mmmm.... shiny things........

very nice tony, I can see why you don't want to get it dirty!

I also like the way you have the bar pad facing you so that you can read the "Yamaha" while you're riding ;D

Where did the rear guard come from?

Nice bike...pity to get it dirty! Is the pipe chromed or aluminium or ceramic coated?

Where is Mr Gantor by the way? He seems to have disappeared as quickly as he'd arrived! I actually enjoyed the anally retentive detail of his rebuild posts and picked up a few tips along the way. 8)

Thanks for the comments boys.  as far as you r comment "I also like the way you have the bar pad facing you so that you can read the "Yamaha" while you're riding goes I think you have the name facing you so you don't forget yourself and try to pass a Maico 490  ;D ;D

Mainline the front and rear guard is NOS J model from Yamaha.  Fits nicely, but now I'm not too sure about the colour.  Obviously it is white ::), but NOS side covers from H model do not match the NOS front and rear Guards  >:( >:(

Looks like I am off to XYZ for the rest of the set.  May as well go for the tank as well as this sanding caper is absolute Bullshit  :o

Firko, the pipe is chromed, which is probably not as good as the ceramic finish, but looks better IMHO.  I was going to leave it as GMC sent it to me, but after it came up with Rusty fingerprints the morning after I opened it in tropical Innisfail I knew I would have to do something to protect it.  Maybe a bit too much bling, but hopefully still tasteful.

Nathan,  It will definitely be a rider.  As Mainline and Doc say whatever happens to it can be fixed with paint and/or money.

You just need to position yourself closer to the beer fridge while you work. The hours will just fly by.

Is the J guard the same profile as the H? a mate picked up a Concourse plastics F guard and it doesn't work at all.

Maybe a few more photos will win you over Ted  ;).  I know what you mean though, I thought long and hard about it.  Now it has grown on me.

The bike is actually a bit further along than this.  The photos I took the other day were all crap.

Mainline the rear guard profile is perfect - it bolts straight up with no problems at all - I have the same thing on the 465.  Maybe there was a colour change in the plastics between H and J.  Anyone know - hello Nathan.

WMC - yes the muffler is GMC as well.  It all fits very neatly.  SPECIAL THANKS TO BILLET YZ WHO TOOK HIS BIKE TO GMC FOR A FITTING.

Looking real nice YZ250H, I like the chrome pipe. I'm having GMC do a pipe for my YZ465H and after seeing yours chromed am thinking of doing the same. What sort of cost for the chroming, can anyone recommend a chrome plating company in Sydney.

Cheers

Title: Re: Progress Photos
Post by: YZ250H on February 13, 2010, 10:45:37 am
490J - I'll be very interested to see how the 465 pipe turns out as I want to get one for mine too.  The standard pipe has a crack in it right at the most obvious spot.  Any repairs would stand out like dogs bollocks.  From memory the chroming was $250 from 5 star metal polishers in South Australia.  I have had a few jobs done by them (steel rims etc) and they seem to do a good job.

E74 did one in ceramic (which I think is more durable) in the for sale section.

A beautiful bake and a credit to him.  Hope to make my 465 look like that one day after I have finished thrashing (well trying to) it.

Hoony, the 50 then Nathan's 125 basket case - when I say basket case it was exactly that.  Came as a frame a 2 beer cartons worth of stuff.
The 465 actually goes, so I don't want to pull it apart just yet ;D

I don't have them all in the one place, but here are some I took the other day

This is the 125  ;D ;D as delivered by Nathan (thanks mate)

and here are some of the others - the 465 just happened to be in the background
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/tbarsby/dec09226.jpg)

The 50 motor is about to go back together.  The manual says NOT to pull the crank into the case with the screws, so I am thinking about making an installer tool.

No such thing as free riding in VMX Alison ;D ;D - it could be a lot worse though, I think our sport is relatively cheap.  The Free ride days sound right up my Alley - especially since I haven't even started a bike since CD7  :o :o :o :o

Sadly no frogman.  Still got 125H x 2, 60H, 80H and 100H to go, by then the 465 will need a touch up.  Actually haven't found the 100H yet.
The 465 is basically the same in nearly every aspect, so shouldn't be too many dramas  ;)
Took me a long time to get all my tools etc together.  The 50 went really quickly (for me) and hopefully the others will be the same.  After that comes the YZ250C, then the 125 J.  Have to get these all done as the missus says no more bikes until I have resto'd all the projects I have - can't understand why.  I think it's like saving puppies from the pound - you just want to save them all  ;D ;D

Have to get my finger out as I'd really like a KX500 or an 84 CR500  ;D and a TT500C and ..................  :D
Title: Re: Progress Photos

Ahhh, the elusive YZ100H, you dont see many of those around. I saved a badly neglected Little 100G from the wreckers or dump and was rewarded with a bike that goes like the clappers, unfortunately I nipped up the bottom end not long before xmas. So I guess it will just need .......................a full blown out of control resto, or a new rod. ;D Keep the pics a comin anyways mate. I think I might do something different with the 465, like take a photo before so as I will have a comparison for when its done.

yeah Froggy, I think that is the best tip I can give any restorer is to take heaps of before photos - even when you restore a part.
Good luck on the 465 mate, they truly are an awesome bike - so much fun.  If you are going to go black rims give me a call and we can swap.  I hate the ones on mine.

Not actually sure about a TT500H ??  I remember as a young bloke watching guys ride new versions of the TT's down the beach of Fraser island in QLD and thinking how awesome they were.  There were fishtails as far as you could see  8)

I wonder when they stopped making the TT500 ?

Fantastic job Tony. be a shame to get her dirty but that's what they're for.

Couple of questions,

- are the footpegs the ones you find on evilbay and stamped with a # number (do you remember the vendor) & did they bolt straight up ok to the original H footpeg mounts?

- I've seen a lot of H's with a G intake joint and the Energy Induction system removed.  What's the pros & cons of the YEIS? (no doubt been a thread on this at some stage?)

cheers
Woody

woody, I just picked up some new pegs off ebay for my 125C project, they'll need a bit of work to fit that, but to get them onto the  250H (or similar), all you need to do is trim 5mm-ish off the width (from the tubung section of the peg), and cut and rebend the return spring (easier said than done, hey Tony ;D)

These come with new pins, springs etc, so a pretty good deal methinks.

Dudes,

As far as footpegs go I have since worked out that you can buy the PW50 ones off ebay and the bolt straight up using the original springs etc - $25 or so from memory - delivered  8) 8)  Search for PW50 footpegs  ;)

There is some theory that there is no lag when you get back on the power after backing off with the boost bottle.  From what I have seen so far it seems to work.  Motolink in Pommoland makes these and they seem to be a good product.

Very nice are you going to ride it?

Rode it at CD7 (after I sorted out the gear lever so I could get to second gear  ::)  )  Definitely a rider ;)

Gee Tony....How lucky were you to pick up that technological dilema....lucky it wasn`t the gearbox as everybody else thought. You are a genius. Top stuff.hehehe

thanks guys, I like the look of those 85 pegs Mainy but dunno if I could be forked re-manufacturing them. they seem to have an extra curly bit on these protruding from the bottom of the mount area. good price and look great, a bit like these ones;

Tony, how strong are those $25 chinese pegs, do they have a number stamped on them?

cheap as chips though;

The first photo Woody put up is what I did for the 250.  Was a lot of buggerising around (Thanks Mainline for modifying the springs 8) ).

The second photo go straight on - no drilling out mounts or grinding or mucking around with springs.  The look as solid as the other ones.  I put them on the 50.  So easy and definitely the way I would go.  In fact I have bought a pair of those for my 125 project.  On top of all that they are cheap as chips  ;).  New springs are also way cheaper.

You did a grate job, but vintage bikes never had pipes like that.  take that crap off, then ride it hard so the pipe turns blue (works pipe)   Who makes the pipe?

Ha Ha.  Tell us what you really think Ditcher.  Chromed the pipe for a reason.  Would have preferred to leave it as it was, but the weather where I was living at the time didn't allow.  Pipe made by GMC. Fitted beautifully no problems.
