Title: OZVMX - History / What year did it start ?
Post by: Hoony on April 19, 2019, 10:30:52 am
i have been a bit quiet on here of late, but then again so has many others.

i just got to thinking when did the forum start, it has a history i'm guessing back to 2000's era, it got hacked by the Ottomans and others from memory. its glory days of high activity are past due to other media (like spacebook) buts its always been a great resource of collective knowledge.

i miss the incredible resto's that members like Doc used to post up, the suzuki footpeg thread,
the "VMX version of war and piece" - The Sprite/alron saga and other crazy stuff.

OZVMX started as a YAHOO group run by Graeme McElligot (spelling?) and even before that as the PETshop.

He changed to the forum as we know it after Ray Ryan's passing and I think we owe him a big thank you for his work.

But I still can't work out when it all happened. I attended (I think) CD3 at Barrabool and the forum started not long after

CD3 was definitely at Barrabool. first 2 were at Kyneton in approx 2001,2002 so i think CD3 was 2003.

i know CD4 at Broadford was 2007 as i have pics and dates there was a few years between CD3 and CD4 due to Ray's passing.

Yes they where grea write ups Hoony.
Ken Smith from VMX Magazine has been writing a blog along with Barbara Ryan via email, its a great read with the upcoming CD15,hope it gets written into the next issue of VMX Magazine

Quote :But Ray was definitely a man with Vision (with a capital V), so he started scouting for a place to hold event number 3, somewhere with a better track and facilities and chose Geelong.  He managed to get some famous faces to attend this event, Brad Lackey and Jim Pomeroy to name a few.

Quote :The very first VMX Magazine Classic Dirt in 2000 happened to incorporate my birthday so it was a great start to the two decades of Classic Dirt events I've attended.

CD4 Broadford Vic 2007

I have a funny feeling that I remember your name from the old OZVMX Yahoo Group.
The others that come to mind are Firko, Tony T, and Tim754. I'm sure there were others but the memory fades........................

Yes Brent I remember you had a TT500 up around Darwin if my memory serves. Did you use a chainsaw cdi on it?

I did to my eternal regret!
Heaps of torque down low but starting became a game of chance. One episode broke the kick start knuckle and the next put me on crutches for two weeks. You would kick it 5-6 times with no joy then it would fire too early and drive the motor backwards. Technically speaking a 4 stroke can't run backwards but with the muffler full of fuel mix there's enough to make it fire 4-5 times and run backwards. It doesn't so much kick back as the lever gets DRIVEN into you foot.
NEVER AGAIN

If we go back to the original YAHOO group, you and Tim754 could be the longest continuously serving members of this group. I think both of you were members when I joined.
There were several others but they have left and returned at various times over the years.
You and Tim754 can argue over who was first but I reckon I've got a good chance to claim the No 3 spot ;D

I had the number one spot on Ozvmx but left for a while and had to re-register, not sure why.

July 07 is the oldest post here but this is the reboot, I think it was around 04 when I heard about the original forum and joined up, it had already been going a while.

Been a bit quiet on here myself, not much to write home about these days
When alzheimer's kicks in a bit more I might start posting more but then I will just be repeating myself :o

I think a lot left when some of the posts got quite nasty . Graeme was quite a good mod and didn't put up with it . I miss some of the older blokes mmmm . I pop in every once in a while but not lie b4 .  Iain used to be Iainyz a long time ago .

I've been here for a while too.  We lost sooo much information when the Turks hacked us.  A lot of that has been put back on, but not all of it.  There was a particular thread that I loved about Resto tips.

yes i recall that resto thread. we also lost some of Docs Resto's, he amazes me with what he can do with just many hours of labour
polishing and keeping to a budget, a bloke with lots of patience.

Indeed.  Doc is the master of the budget resto.  And all round good guy  :D

yeah I liked Doc's elbow grease/polish/rattle can resto's,he made a old bike look like new again for little money and easy to repair if you damaged the paint job by riding it which is what bikes are for, not shed queen's your not game to ride in fear of pitting that power coated frame.

I also miss the threads like whever the rm125b was legal to race with a factory alloy swingarm,30 something pages of it and most of those guys are not on here anymore which is a shame coz they had a lot of good input into the forum

Indeed, He didnt get that name for nothing. Seeing Doc's creations and restorations in the flesh is something every aspiring restorer should experience.  Guys a wizard and its not all for show. What he doesnt know about the early Suzi stuff just didnt happen and a more likeable humble guy  there never was.
Thinking about Chris Im reminded by another Suzi tragic Teatotaller  who knows PE RM and if he gets his shit together RH. Pity he;s a kiwi but he will do anything for a toasted jumbo marshmallow.
Then we come to the 2T Institute, he can just piss off, he is way too smart not to be an alian.  The guy just knows and has Jennings quivering in his pine box.
Oh and there is that other bloody idiot kiwi or is he a pom who can punt a small bore round a track not bad  but he is good at packing suitcases and smiling when asked for excess baggage.
The Suzuki crew, not a bad bunch of blokes.
