Hi Blokes,
Purchased a sand blasting cabinet from SCA and was wondering what medium you guys would recommend?
Mostly just want to clean up nuts and bolts and small parts,

Blast Medium...... ask the taliban they should be able to help

Like John, I use walnut she'll garnet for ripping stuff down and glass beads for finer and smoother finish.

Ive used garnet which is really agressive, but seems OK on steel. Glass bead on alloy and most other things.

In referance to Blasting media. I have used Aluminium Oxide Grit with good results.
Carburetor bodys and scale and corrosion from float bowls.
A Maico Ignition Cover with Large scratchs . Filed it first then blasted it. Looks brandnew.
It does not remove large amounts of metal like sand will.
Obtainable from SUPERCHEAP in 1 / 5 / 10 KG tubs. Also try Ebay.

Don't be using sand, it was banned for a reason, a reason called Silicosis.
Even though it may be in a cabinet you will still be exposed to the dust every time you open the door or blow the part clean.
Plenty of safe options out there.

I have a basic blasting cabinet with the side opening door. The performance at best was okay, so I did an upgrade using parts similar to the Tacoma upgrade. I fitted a funnel type air/sand mixing chamber to the bottom trapdoor on my cabinet this replaces the syphon pipe . I then fitted a foot operated air pedal and new upgraded gun, but the thing that made the most difference was a clean half inch air line directly from the compressor to the cabinet. The thing most users don't know is that it is not the high pressure that make the blaster more efficient it is the volume of air. I only use 40 pound of pressure in mine. The second mistake people make, is to put to much of the blasting material in their cabinet. This is a lot more weight and more likely to pack down hard and make it difficult to pick up. I use less than a bucket at a time and if I need to change to a different product it only takes a couple of minutes to do the job, no need for a second cabinet. I have some containers where I store my garnet, Glass beads etc new in one used in another and I just pick the one I need and change them over.

Than glass beads are out too. Glass aka 75% silica. Good to know

Fred, I purchased my upgrade parts from ( U BLAST in Melbourne 0397024115 )
The air/sand mixing elbow ( p/n PB-SBC420 ) which mounts to the bottom trapdoor was $30

The new gun assembly which is fitted with a ceramic nozzle p/n ( PB-SBGO2 ) cost $70

I fitted 12mm hose direct from compressor. I also lowered the mesh floor in the cabinet to give me more room inside, fitted a better light and hooked up an old vacuum using one of those cheap Chinese vortex things into a 20ltr container, this traps most of the dust from the cabinet before it reaches the vac.

U Blast gave me the best price back in March 2017, but if you can buy from Amazon their prices are so much cheaper.

I would recommend inda glass beads for that. Its what i use. Good for steel and alloy parts.
For frames and big steel parts with lots of paint or powdercoat or really thick deep rust then take it to someone who has a larger set up and uses garnet
Garnet is bit too harsh for alloy parts
