I've been rebuilding a CZ side piper for a while and was going to put a thread on here about the whole restoration. The problem is now that Photobucket has made a complete arse of themselves I find it impossible to load the photos onto this site. I joined another host for a free 1 month thing but the photos copied onto here were only average, Hoony improved them a bit but they were still not as good as Photobucket. I have been taking photos right through the build, from doing up the frame to polishing most of the alloy, painting, rechroming, rebuilding shocks, wheels the whole thing, a lot of work and I don't just want to put a couple of lines on here without showing the complete build including photos. Anyone no of a free host that is ok for us users with only basic computer skills or should I try to put the rebuild up on another place and maybe put a link on here so any members interested can have a look.

LWC82PE I am a caveman as far as technology goes, I mean a real Neanderthal so it will have to be as simple as possible. Your pictures always come up good, so what host do you use?
Zane

Onedrive. I did use Photobucket for a while but as you know it went bad, so then i went back to Onedrive.
-
I cannot figure out the other hosts,

PS; I reckon you nailed the hubs Zane,,, looks awesome, I think :)
-
I think the ones i mentioned are no harder than Photobucket. They all require upload the photo from your desktop to a designated folder. When its upload, you go to the folder, click on image/open it up and then copy and the link address to the photo, come back to ozvmx and paste it in between the IMG tags. Simple. Some sites you can also right click on the photo and 'copy link address' and then paste that too instead of copying the address from the web browsers address bar.
I have found that i can not see most photobucket hosted photos by other people on forums unless i am using Firefox.

Hi LWC82PE
I am going to give ONEDRIVE a go but first a couple of questions.
Are you signed up for the free 5 gig plan? or one of the other plans. I think one is about $3 a month and another about $100 a year.
Also if I sign up for the free plan will that let me to copy my photos and paste them on the likes of our forum.
I think that one of the reasons this forum is on the decline is that nobody is putting their builds on and the reason for that is we don't know how to put the photos on.
I for one love to see bike builds with photos and also threads like show us your shed etc. sadly these very rarely come up now.
If you can reply with the info I need then I will sign up today and I expect others will as well.
Thanks in advance.

Think you are right Zane

FAT-TOY mine is all free. No cost at all. Had the same account since 2000. The free account gives you 5gb free and i am no where near using all that yet. It says i have used 262mb of 5gb. If you do use up the 5Gb then you can buy more. Or just create a new free 5gb account :)
One thing you do need to do is make sure the folders that have photos you want to post on here, have their viewing permissions set to public/shared.
Make sure you read this too
https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forums/262982-onedrive/suggestions/8264673-there-is-no-option-public-shown-in-onedrive-anym
https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/share-onedrive-files-and-folders-9fcc2f7d-de0c-4cec-93b0-a82024800c07
So now i am not 100% sure if this will work for new users now? Where is MS man Lukeb1961??
-
LWC82PE Well I signed up for ONEDRIVE uploaded photos from my files, easy as. Then highlighted the photo I wanted, then clicked on share this brought up another window I clicked on the share link box and then clicked on copy and pasted it on this site. There in still no photo just the link from ONEDRIVE. If I click on that it takes me back to ONEDRIVE and I can see the photo BUT nobody else can. Hopefully you can talk me through this part, I feel like I am close but not quite there yet.

I spoke to Luke and he has been talking to fellow MS colleagues and it does look like everything still works as it should and there are still public/shared folders still despite what those complainers have said on links i gave above. I even got the special link from Luke that allowed me to create a second/new public folder but to date i have not been able to find anything in the user settings to allow me to manually add another public folder if i want.
Try this-
Ok so in Your One Drive, you should have a folder called PUBLIC. Make sure all your photos are inside that folder ONLY. I think you can set other folders to 'shared' but no one can get direct access to the files within that folder with just the address of the file. They need the link to the folder i think?? So its best to keep photos you want to put on forum in the public folder only as that has special settings that allow its contents to be seen with just the link to the files within. You can have sub folders within that folder, that still works.
When you upload the photo to that folder, open the photo.
Up the top you should see-
SHARE-ADD TO ALBUM-PLAY SLIDE SHOW-ROTATE-OFFICE LENS - and then another drop down menu that has a number of options including VIEW ORIGINAL
it may look a bit different depending on how you screen/browser is set up and what zoom level you are on but thats how it is for me. Just look for VIEW ORIGINAL across the top menu somewhere.
click on VIEW ORIGINAL and the photo will open up full size in a new window.
Then highlight and COPY the address of the photo displayed in your browsers (eg Firefox/Chrome) address bar in that new window and then go back to the form and PASTE that address inside the [IMG] tags.
I can help you more if needed when i can do screen shots but i cant right now.
You need to make sure you highlight and copy the full address and don't leave the last little bits off otherwise it wont display.
If only you can see the photos on forum that means you have either not got the photos in the PUBLIC folder or you have not activated the folder to be shared yet. I am not exactly sure if the public folder still needs to be toggled on to 'shared'
When you are in the public folder, at the top RH corner there is a information (I) icon. Click on it.
it will have details about the folder and its contents.
make sure under the section HAS ACCESS that has 3 icons (add people- links giving access-everyone)
the key point there is the EVERYONE icon. You wont see that in any other folders but the public folder.
If you click on MANAGE ACCESS, it should say EVERYONE - CAN VIEW
See how you you. Once its all set up and you have used it a bit it will become easy/straight forward.

Since the Photobucket rip-off, I have moved all my pictures over to "Google Photo's". It's free, all you need to do is register a google mail account (email). I find it is easier than photo bucket to use. The quality is great too.
Just another option for you.
-
and then when google have a large client base they will do same as photo bucket
this is how to create wealth, hook in a client base with free services, build it up and then extort them.
happens in industrial automation software.
-
Great to see some input. Agree with all of it (I think too)
I would have no problem paying say less than one schooner a week (say $5) membership fee to this forum.
Maybe then it could afford a storage/server large enough to host and archive members image attachments?
-
Or maybe the site owner could raise funds toward such by selling some advertising space to allied industry?
Like Ballards MX store or bike trailer manufacturers etc, for example etc etc?

Seeing as photobucket & Facebook are both property of Mark Zuckerberg now it can't be much longer before the fees start there unless the point of buying photobucket was to drive people into using facebook for their photos. The initial slowing down & saturation with ads only began after the buyout

not sure how they do it but the vintage yamaha site i hang out on enable you to fully load the pics straight from your computer to the site. They did this after P/bucket went septic. works good for me [RT325 on there]. some people [i think the reason] don't fully finish loading or following the instructions so you only get a small part of the pic to click to bring it up full size but still good.
https://www.yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/my-photo-albums/2379-rt325/albums might be interesting pics here of mine if link works but these might've come through pbucket in the early days on here. Otherwise maybe this recent one of an armature puller i did straight from computer to the site post. If i won't show--i give up. https://www.yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/forums/general-discussion/6739-69-at1-125-has-no-spark-need-help-testing-coil#55879

It is possible to attach photos/PDF's etc on the TS forum too, but i wonder how long it is before we use up our space there too. Forums that do that are hosting the photos on the forums storage. I think it used to be possible here but then it was taken away because everyone used up the allowed space and it cost money to buy more so then Graeme stopped that and it ment everyone had to host their own photos/attachments offsite.
-
yep that's right, i remember that now because i remember the hassle [ie my inability] to understand how to make p/bucket work to transfer them, got it in the end, till they started charging. Sorry, what's the TS forum?--that obvious i can't see it or think what it means.

I personally decide to host my photos off forums because if the forums crash/get hacked etc the photos are gone. if i have them hosted at my storage they stay there and i dont need to waste time re-uploading them again.

Hey Zane,
I use imgur, it's free and very easy to use.
Here's an example,
Pete.

Hi Pete,
Just signed up for Imgur and uploaded some photos. Now how do I copy them so I can paste them on here. When I click on and highlight a photo a window appears with 6 choices that I can copy, Which one do I use.

BB Code
Linked BB Code
Probably simple for you smarter and younger members, but I was born in the first half of last century and it's like learning to speak Chinese for me.
p.s. Are you going to the weekend at Dargle in March?
Zane
-
Hi Zane, use the BBCode. After you have done that, click on the icon that is on the second row and second from the left (under the italic icon) on the OZVMX forum (above the emojis). It will show (URL)(/URL). Right click your cursor right in the centre between the brackets and then hit CTRL V and bingo, you'll be there.
I hope I've done a good enough job explaining it but if not PM your phone number and I'll walk you through it.
Not sure about Dargle, you know my job and there's a good chance I'll be in good old Asia, but if I'm here I'll be there.
-
Sorry Zane, forgot to mention, you won't see the picture until you preview or post it - up until then all you see is the path. Good luck mate,
Pete.
-
Oh yeah, and ni hao - (hello in Chinese), first lesson lol.
-
Thanks Pet, Well they are back on and hopefully for keeps. This host is so much easier than that ripoff photobucket mob. I think that if I can master it then anyone can.
Zane
-
All good Zane, and I just had a look at your post and, as usual, awesome job. Can't wait to see more,
Pete.
-
Thanks Pete,,, I will have a go at Imgur when I get time too :)
-
No worries Mick, it seems like a good alternative to f***bucket..
