Hi everyone. I have a PE and its lights are very sensitive to revs. If I hit the rear brake during high revs the filament blows. I have a stuffed battery in it, and I wonder if a battery is stuffed then the peak charge isn't absorbed and the lights respond in this way. Alternatively would it be a regulator issue?

They don't have regulator. Al globes need to be the same correct wattage as per the manual/parts book. Use OEM globes unless you are educated enough to know what brands to get as aftermarket items. Many of the cheap non japanese globes are not good quality.

Leith is spot on. its a basic load sharing system and if one item isnt to spec it doesnt like it. what you can do is fit a ballast resistor to the tail lights to convert the excess juice into heat. Thats also your clue as to where to mount it as it will get hot and melt stuff if it doesnt have cooling.

Thanks a lot guys. On a related matter, if I wanted to scrap the battery, can I just cut the wires, or do I need to do something else?? Capacitor?

Just take the battery out, . Blinkers and horn will probably miss the battery but the lights will still work. just pull the battery and see what happens .

Replace the bulb with an LED, they have a built in current limiting resister which will stop it blowing on rpm surges

Thanks for the suggestion. I've bought one from eBay so let's see what happens. The theory is certainly sound. Is there a similar item available for the headlight?

Voltage regulators are cheap and easy to fit. I had the same issue with my 78 390WR Husky many years ago. Fitted one, and have never blown a bulb since.

Theres loads out there if you want 12v. Search for Trail Tech AC regulator or Tympanium AC regulator. Latter is what all the Baja 1000 guys used to run back in the day. Single hole mounting like this

MSR still sell them too i think.
For 6 volt try one of the british bike specialists or search for BSA bantam regulator. Pretty certain Electrex in UK make universal 6 v Ac regs too. HPI in Belgium probably have them too.

any old TS 6v regulator may work too, but the thing is the while system was not designed for a regulator so fitting one may not do what you want it to.
An AC reg has nothing to do with the battery or DC current though. Capacitors are for DC as well.
PE battery circuit runs off a separate low output coil that trickle charges the battery via a half wave rectifier that hangs off the back of the frame. You can just disconnect all that if you do not want blinker/horn. You would have to wire the brake light into the AC light circuit though but then there probably wont be enough output from the light coil. You could swap the charge coil for a second light coil and it could give enough.
The thing is with these PE stators and electrics, you cant really just tack on band aid solutions and half modify the system. They need to be kept all stock or you need to modify the whole lot an update it fully with different or rewound coils and a proper charging circuit or AC only circuit and while your at it change out tail/brake light to LED to free up more power. If you were to fit a modern full waye regulator/rectifier in the charging circuit to charge a 12v battery for example you would have virtually no output. The stock coil puts out so little that there's no need for regulating its output to the 6v battery.
With a roll of copper wire the PE stators can be rewound for 120watts 12v AC or thereabouts. I got an article how to do it.
This can all be a can of worms if you have no idea what you are doing.
