Title: Conrod kits for cr480's
Post by: 090 on August 23, 2008, 11:27:54 am
Thought i'd throw it out there as you can't buy one from Honda any more. If anyone has been able to adapt a kit off another bike Im all ears!

I believe the hot set up back in the day was to use a 10mm longer rod out of a KTM model and a spacer under the barrel. If you would like more info i can look into it more for you....

You can do the same with an '84 500 rod, but it's a total pain in the arse.
Not only do you have to get a spacer plate made up, you also have to overcome the different height in the exhaust and intake manifolds...then there is port timing.
I ended up refitting the old rod to new bigend bearings and pin, worked fine.

if you use the spacer the same as the extra rod length the should be no difference in the port timeing as the fly wheel has the stroke not the length of the rod.my 73 cr has a 4mm spacer in it.
cheers

Spacers sound good but ever tried putting your up pipe back on when barrel is higher.  ???

its only 4mm.this kit is a product used  in the usa with no problems. you think pipes are made with no + or - tolerences.if this was the case no one would buy the product, then the seller, Vintage elsinores would not stock something he cant sell,

I doubt you would have a hassle with 4mm and down pipe Jim but 10mm with up pipe seems like trouble to me.  Some of my up pipe bikes are plan in the arse getting pipe on but with a 10mm lift added to the barrel raising exhaust port id hate to be the one trying to jam pipe back on, if will it fit at all.

Are you saying you have a rebuilt crank to suit an 82 83 480 Drew?
I dont think that a later model CR rod would fit an 82/3 as it is a fair amount shorter than an 85/86 and even shorter than the post 88 500's.
Plus another issue being big end pin size.

evo.
I bought a few big bore Honda's  ( Unfinished projects ) and this crank was part of it deal. It was rebuilt years ago and left seal in plastic bag unused. I sold both the 480s about year or more back. I have had the crank, seat and few other minor bits tucked away that didnt get sold with the bikes.
