Title: Sun 18x1.85 rear rim
Post by: LWC82PE on February 26, 2017, 07:11:22 pm
I am looking for an 18 x 1.85 wide 36 hole Sun rear rim. NOS would be good but a good condition used one is also fine. Needs to be from a drum brake rear Japanese wheel 70’s to early 80’s. There's basically only 2 types of drill patterns, one for un-even flanged hubs and one for even flanged hubs.
Numbers to look for stamped on rims would be
788000
788022
But there may be other numbers for 36 hole 18x1.85 rims too
These will most likely be for Honda CR/MT/XL/CT, Suzuki RM/PE/TS/RL/TM/SP and Yamahas YZ/MX/DT/IT/TY etc

Why not buy a new one from Buchanan?

That might be an option, but i already got some NOS fronts and good used fronts so  i'd like matching condition, plus Buchanans drill after anodizing so this exposes the raw alloy in the spoke holes, so i would probably just re-do the anodizing anyway. The old ones were anodized after drilling.

Who and how much to do the re-anodising?

Anodizing is really cheap. Its the polishing that costs heaps if you have to pay for it. Another thing is that Buchanans anodizing does not match the old type Sun rims too. At least in silver anyway. Not sure what i will do yet. I got plenty of 2.15 rims but no 1.85's

Why not fit the 2.15s. That is what the modern tyres are made for.

Too wide for a small bike and will balloon tyre out wider which i don't want. Already have enough of a problem with tyre clearance and knob clearance on the side as it is.
