Ok so i got the bike up and running today there was a new top end to put on..and i put the forks back on though they are shot..just so its easier to move around plus i wanted to take it for a ride. Started easily Ran ok but lacked power was quite flat..i suspected carb had issues so i swapped the reed cage and manifold for spare dt200r one i had modified to bolt up..then fitted a 30mm d slide oko carb which i had. This woke it up and made the bike run very nicely with much stronger pull ..
My 1st question how much improvement is there to be made on the exhaust side if things..i really like the style of it.will a stock mx or yz pipe improve things further or just shift the power up the rev range..? also rear shocks will need replacing at some stage..what options are there with out spending too much.? This bike will be used for general trail and dirt thanks

Njb shocks, best for the low cost & they work. I'd keep your old pipe, but still look at getting a race pipe of sorts, there is a few choices & someone here will let you know what's best. Jimson

Eltham dirt cycles ??? from years ago used bassani's or their own aftermarket pipe for the dt's. they used to flog a "trail / enduro" ready bike with a few mods, knobbies etc for racers out the door ( with a good "loading" on the rrp of course) look up some early trail and track mags as they usually had a big advert from EDC EDB ..cant quite remember

The YZ or MX pipes won't fit a DT2. Look at photos of a YZ and you will see why. The hot setup in the day was to fit a DT2MX head, a RT2/3 32mm carb and a Bassani pipe. Still doesn't give it MX type power without porting to match. You could fit a DT1 GYT pipe if you could find one but very rare and didn't come with any muffler just an open stinger.

OK are you building a race bike or a trail bike . 2nd ? do want to spend lots or go as cheap as you can ?
A YZ a or b 250 cylinder will fit . Pipes can be made ( Geoff Morris Concepts makes great pipes )
The early DT's 1 , 2 and 3 share most parts except the crank is different DT1 to DT2 . this motor is the Base for the DT2MX , YZa and YZb
so parts interchangeability is huge . The GYT kits are hens teeth and are priced to match . If you are going to race the flat side DT200 carb will disqualify you . http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h153/iain_cameron1/033_zpscznecrdm.jpg

Hey thanks guys..the bike will be a cheap fun dedicated trail bike..there will be no period racing , i just put a dt200r frontend on i had spare, as the originals were shot..it was as simple as swapping bearings...good ole yamaha..just about got the jetting sorted on the OKO carb..just a lil lean on idle jet .thanks for the rear shock ideas..

How does the disk feel on the front ? wow a DT that has brakes that's a new idea. mine sees a puddle of water 1/2 a k away and the brakes fail .

Well the front end as a whole feels much better..i think ttr250 caliper fits a dt200 front end too which would be an even better up grade to stopping power and feel..
