Title: Kick start return spring
Post by: Paul Harris on January 05, 2017, 03:58:12 pm
Hi - hoping someone can give me some guidance in reinstalling/resetting the kick start return spring in a DT175 (1980). The engine's fitted into a YZ125D frame. It had an intermittent noise in the motor so I took off the clutch case looking for something obvious. All I have found is the clip holding the kick start gear in place wasn't seated in the groove - it was unseated at both ends. I've fixed that but now I can't figure out how to set the return spring. The motor/gears/clutch were all running fine - just this grinding noise every so often which then became louder. I don't particularly want to strip the motor as I don't really know what I'm doing...

Cheers, Paul

Hello Paul
If you mean the spring on the outside of the kick start shaft, when you put the shaft in its position it's approximately half a turn clockwise then the end will slip into the hole in the gearbox casing, the spring tensions itself as the kickstart goes down, hope this helps,my engines apart at the moment,if all else fails your welcome to have a look
Cheers scotty

Paul, also need to preload the return spring, usually 1/2 a turn past the shaft (clockwise),& the "L" shaped end shoved in a "V shaped cranny" receptacle on the inner case, which from memories locked in when clutch covers back on??, :P

Thanks Mick. Had no luck yet but I'll try again with that advice.
