-
same as any thing how bad do you want one / how bads the one you got ,carnt you rebuild it( the crank)
and wasnt it just recently done

crank is cactus Paul, outer ring split, both cases have a big hole and possibly can be repaired ( will post pics to GMC later for his view) looking at options at present.
and yes the crank was done recently, 1 meeting only before this one (Yanakie) so Very Dissapointed.
-
shit thats bad luck, some one here should be able to help ,lets hope

I dont know if he has what you want as his list isn't current but might be worth an email
-
Just put it back together with velcro, it will be easier to repair next time ;D ;D
Welding shouldn't be a problem if you can't find any.
-
G'day Walter, will do! Shock worked well, noticed a difference with shortened shaft and O/Haul.
G'day Brad, thanks mate i will check it out. there is some on ebay at present but looks like a few interested parties,

Hey Hoony, the crank Paul has found would be good buying, I have a 84 500 crank spare and it cost me 160 delivered with freight being 60.00 USD. I see in his ad he says halves fit 84 to 01 so again remember I had the 84 250 crank that I got from Serco for 330.00 including main bearings brand new (all the same 84 to 01 on the 250).
So may be worth asking your local Serco agent if not let me know and I will take the crank I have to Serco machining in Brisbane for comparision.
If I am right has the tin cans on the side of the crank let go?? and punched a hole out the bottom of cases? One of my 250's had this problem and welded up ok so I am sure Geoff could weld ok.
The problem with the Honda cranks "is" the tin cans and they will run ok without (they say you lose a bit of bottom end power but that is not a problem on a 500) if it has done little running you may need to speak to the person how rebuilt it as the "cans" can be easily damaged when pressing.
PM Squirtmoto he is up with these models
Shane

G'day Shane,
i did enquire with serco yesterday about the crank after you gave me the heads up about the one you got for the CR250RE some time back and they said they don't do them for 500's.
yes you are correct the tin cans have let go and i suspect it may have been damaged when the crank was rebuilt, even though i used a guy that has done these before and was aware of the problem.
i will put a bid in on that item, thanks for your help and Many Thanks to Paul.
-
NO WORRIES HOONY I HOPE IT DONT GO FOR TOO MUCH ,OUTA INTEREST WHAT SHOULD ONE COST
-
Also Hoony if you do no good I have and 84 one we could look at, It is a spare to me but I have just bought a complete engine from the states so the crank will go un-used. I have checked the stroke to see if it is the same and they are.
On pricing another bloke from up here paid around the 180 (AUD) mark for a 84 crank including delivery (3 weeks ago) so that would be about the mark to aim for.
Shane
-
thanks guys, i really appreciate your time. thats great Shane as i was thinking to bid around that mark ($100-120 + del) for the crank and about the same for each case half. i have confirmed combined shipping for all 3 at US $85
Wish me luck. if i am unsuccessful there is another lot on the go a few days away i'm watching too. i hope no other forum members are bidding as well as i don't want to clash with someone else in a bid war.
if all fails i will run my 250 (old faithful) at the next round. now how do you change lots of gears again? thats gonna take some getting used to again after the 5Hundy !

For budgeting repairs you can allow $55.00 - $220.00 to repair the cases.
Things that will make it dearer than $55.00 to repair...
# Damage is to both cases.
# I've run out of Bourbon.
# Damage is to a gasket surface.
# The phone bill just came in.
# A bolted section is broken off.
# My wife wants new clothes.
# Awkward webbing makes some parts hard to reach.
# Argon bill just came in.
# Parts are Magnesium. ( highly unlikely for crankcase halves)
# It's late & I feel like Pizza.
# Customer doesn't want to split cases.
# It's early Monday morning & I don't feel like working.
# Customer doesn't want to take engine out of bike.
I'm not trying to drum up work, just adding food for thought.
Check the cases your buying are good ones, I've known of guys buying in chambers thinking they would be better than what they had, but turned out to be NQR & needed fixing anyway, sometimes your better with the devil you know.
Repaired cases don't necessarily mean big globs of weld everywhere.
-
Hey Geoff, Argon just went up ;D ;D
And you guys being Mexicans is that AUD or paso??
Shane

Pieces of shell on a small vine , cracked low quality mirrors and some blocks of petrified llama turds, so they are understood and easily traded to our northern neighbours................... :P

so i will send them too you after
- you have paid the phone bill
-the fridge is full of piss
- the misses has been shopping for clothes
-argon bill paid for
-early in the day before you get hungry and mid week
so i think that gives me a window of 35mins in november ;D
well here is the damage so far ! not good, i will pull the rest down over the next few
days.
had to walk away from it today.
-
.
-
Just as well you bought some other cases as that 35 min. in Nov. is my annual leave;D
It's certainly some nasty damage, not surprised that you might be a bit peeved.
I'm in awe of your riding abilty, theirs only a handfull of people in the world that can ride a 500 to it's potential, & even fewer that can ride one past it's potential ;D
-
wasnt it a great idea by honda
to put tin shrouds on crank flywheels ??? doh
-

Its obvious you have never seen me track side then Geoff. ;)
Have to agree with you backdoor Buddy, that tin shroud idea was a shitter ::)
-
That my friends is why Mr Honda is the biggest motorcycle company in the world as they have ample on going sales of thier products ??? ??? and now Mr Ebay is cashing in >:(
Hey Hoony the story I would tell (if it happened up here) I was flat out over the main straight jump at Conondale leaving Holeshot for dead and bang that cheap Shell oil he gave me kicked in :D ;D
-
For your info, I used an 01 crank with an 85 rod (which is still available through Honda) in my 85 500 engine. If you can't get an 84-86 short rod, you can use the later rod which is 5mm longer and use a Serco spacer plate which I've seen used and works a treat. ;D
-
Why did you use the 01 crank zorroz? Does it not have the fillers on the webs? Good info btw. Didn't know Serco has the spacer.Would make a crank rebuild alot cheaper using the longer rod as they are only about $90US .
-
Yes i too am interested in the reasons behind your decision Zorroz. as a matter of interest what does the serco spacer plate cost.
-
I used the 01 crank cause I got it for nothing and I couldn't find an 85 crank for love nor money! I don't know the exact differences but it worked great as advised by local guru Dave Hall. There's heaps of good info on CR500riders. Here's a link about the spacer plate. Its Cometic that makes the plate and it works a treat.

-
Thanks again zorroz for the link and info about the spacer.
-
What increase if any in cc is it? Have seen these plates on sidecar engines.
-
no increases in cc or performance Tim, it is purely to allow for parts availability. later model (1987 onwards) crankcases have a 5mm higher cylinder base cast into the cases compare to 85/85 model. because of this the conrod kits are different. so you can use the spacer plate on 85/86 models and the rod kit from 87 onwards.
1985 was the High compression model and each year after that honda decompressed the CR500 slightly on every model until around 1988 to make them more rideable. That is why the sidecar boys only want 85/86 models for the lightweights back then tim as they had a few more horses and it would have been very noticeable on a sidecar with the extra weight. Bill Williams and Bruce Linsdall won the 1987 1000cc aussie title in Tassie at Bryant Park Smithton on a 86 CR500 EML.
top pic is 85/86 cases lower is 87 onwards.
-
Thanks Hoony .See ya at Ravo Sunday (oops later today!!) ;) ;)
