nice bike mick
my favourite husky ;D
-
very nice
-
Very sweet. I'm with Buddy, that model was one of Huskys finest. It's a bummer about that ding in the pipe though BigK. It stands out like dogs bollocks on such a nice bike. :o
-
The ding's just a battle scar. Wear it with pride. I'm sure it came during a daring overtaking move for first. Adds character to a 35 year old racebike. I'm glad you're using it in anger. Go the Huskies. Best looking MXers of the '70s.
-
Thanks for the comments guys. I'll get to the pipe once the season is finished.
Cheers,
K

G'day Big K . How does the bike perform with that pipe on it ? I like the look of it & it would solve the issue of burning your leg with the standard pipe on that model Husky . I can't see a fuel tap , so I was wondering if it clears the pipe ok , or is it fitted to the other side of the tank ? I am interested in buying a '74 CR/WR400 or a '75 WR400 if any one out there has one for sale .
-
There were a couple up recently in WA, have a look through forum>marketplace>Wanted... on p2 there's a thread called Pre-75 Open class racer, sift through there. ;)
-
The bike fly's and has really good strong useable power. 13/53 gearing, and with the short chassis the front wheel is easy to float over obstacles and even about a foot of the ground down the straight at Ravo, great fun. The fuel tap is standard and just not in the photo as I was waiting on a new one. The pipe doesn't cause any concern when riding it, although the paint gets rubbed off by your knee. I raced it for the first time at the VCM round at Ravenswood and went pretty good considering I have never raced a pre'75 bike before. They actually graded up to expert on the day, which is not too bad for a fat, old, bald bloke! I got a ride in on the '74 mag 250 as well before a small gremlin came along and caused it to be parked for the rest of the day, and I must say while the 400 is grouse, the 250 is grouser! I have fixed the problem and can't wait to give her a go next weekend at a local track before the trip to Mirboo North for the next VCM round.
Cheers,
K

They're the best-looking of all the huskies imho, & yr bikes always look a treat BigK.
Love to hear yr report on the MAG after next w'end.
-
Will post some pics of my cr400 project soon,it`s had the lay down shock and extended swingarm treatment applied, so I`m after a MK frame if there`s any out there. Make that 2 frames got a 250 Mag engine that I want to build a bike around.

Marky, nice kickstarter stop.

Thought that was standard?

Big K,
I would look around for a genuine pipe at the end of the season....personally I thing a "modern" design pipe like that is sooooo out of character with what we are trying to recreate...AND..then there is the little matter about the MOMS...."exhaust pipes must generally follow the original lines"....which that pipe clearly does not...the fact that you have been allowed to use that pipe at club level events is not relevant..I believe you should attempt to recreate the era... :)
-
Rather a big call, YF. Huskies of that era had all manner of different pipes, exiting on either side, and I'd imagine the MOMS interpretation would suggest that a fat, underslung pipe wouldn't be favourably received. But racing isn't a concours event, so I very much doubt that anyone would ever knock this bike back on the grounds of eligibility for this pipe. Perhaps you could outline what you believe we are "trying to recreate" here.....do you mean machines presented in OEM trim, without mods or improvements ? If so, that is the very opposite of what was happening in racing at that time : any mod that worked, or served to psych-out the opposition, was instantly acquired and employed ! As far as I can see, vmx racing today is still based upon like-minded nostalgia victims riding round with like-minded buddies, on bikes more than 30 years old because they're enjoying it. Once the fine details become over-analysed, the giggle factor tends to dissipate..... ;)
-
The pipe is a Circle F, readily available and quite common in the USA. I personally don't think for one minute it detracts from the era or the look of the bike, as there were all manner of pipes back then & now. I don't like snail pipes but others do. Pipes are considered consumable and have no restrictions anyway. I still have the original pipe YF, maybe you could fit it to your Yammie. If we all had the same tastes it would be a boring old world, and really there's no need to can anyone or anything just because we may not like it. I love me 400 with that pipe and I love my 250 with the standard pipe. I suppose you won't like my '76 WR360 then, it has a '78 390 pipe on it....
Cheers,
K
-
but do you get her on the pipe mick ;D
-
You can see that in the photo, on the pipe, on the rock! It's a good thing Rus, on or off the pipe. Pigmy tells me it throws some fine roost.
Cheers,
K
-
Big K gets on the pipe dont worry about that, chased him around in pre 75 expert class at VCM round 4, held at Ravenswood.
-
I don't see the same thing Yammiefan sees. The pipe on Big Ks Husky looks period correct to me and I'm the biggest critic of non period mods on this bloody forum. Pity about that dent though. ;)
-
he needs the dent in the pipe
so pigmy can keep up
thats my theory ???
-
Well, I appreciate everyones opinion and that is what makes the sport such a diverse field...BUT....unless Mark is looking thru a different set of glasses (beer) that pipe is nothing like an OEM pipe...remembering that the MOMS states at rule 18.3.0.4 "Exhaust may be modified but must
generally follow original lines."....last time I saw a Pre 75 Husky the pipe came out of the exhaust port went upwards (not downwards) then along the gearchange side of the bike...I don't recall seeing any Husky exhaust in 1974 that had centre cones that large or a tail pipe that slender and long..let alone being routed downwards first..
You guys can judge for yourself if that style of exhaust is "true to the era"... :)
-
Yammiefan.....Nobody hates fatpipes more than this fatboy but that pipe is pretty much in line with period thinking. It's made by Circle F which builds it's pipes with the AHRMA exhaust rules in mind which are far stricter than ours. On a personal note Ithink the stock pipe looks better but this is a race bike not a garage queen so it's the owners perogative as to what he runs as long as it's within the guidelines of the rules which I think it is.
Yammiefan, I'll throw one at you. I ran a very similar pipe on my MAICO in 1974. As you no doubt realise, Maicos came with downpipes but my Aaen Engineering pipe which I bought from Blair Harley the Maico importer in 1974 is an up pipe very similar to the the pipe on BigKs Husky. Using your interpitation of MOMS, you'd be telling me I can't run a pipe I bought prior to 1975. I still have it and would have it on my bike today if it 1:worked and 2:didn't burn the shit out of my leg.
Big Ks pipe is legal, trust me.
-
I tend to agree with yammiefan. I have a 74 Mag 250 with the stock pipe. I have the excellent Huskyjunk through the frame pipe (thanks Chuck) which requires fitting the 75 radial head, which I also have. While I am not affected by the Aussie rules (I am in NZ), to me the stock arrangement is "true to the era" (aesthetically as well as under relevant rules) and the radial head / through the frame job is not. The 75 head would presumably put it out of pre-75 anyway.
I do not recall seeing "all manner of pipes" or any through the frame pipes on Huskies until 1975/6, when the Americans (Grossi / Howerton?) put them on the 360GP. Must dig out the old Dirt Bike mags...
Just my 2c worth; as GD66 says, whatever spins your spurs, but I prefer the original (or close to it) look.
-
I only wanted to show a photo of my bike, maybe think twice for the next one :-\.
K
-
i like it and i couldnt give a flying Duck if it got a dented pipe , its a neat looking racer thats what matters
-
Nice bike.
MMMM husky
But seriously , go fast parts = go fast bike. fat pipe , big reeds , big mikuni , fat pegs , fat bars , fat paint job all enhance the riding experience.
Great job on the bike Mich.
Keep building them and keep posting them up
-
Mark, I have been lead to believe that you had a great input to the formulation of the rules that make our book so verbose...Let me ask you this Mark....using your own interpretation, please let me know which part of a Circle F pipe (style) generally follows the original lines....apart from the tailpipe and the muffler which happen to end up on the same side of the bike as the original...I would not like to front at a nationals with the "old chestnut" ...my club let me use it and no-one has said anything...!!And well done to other forum users...obviously the thinking mans Maico rider....I love it when people resort to profanity..FFF... :)No-one really minds the dent..!! ;)
-
i see nothing wrong with the pipe 8)
i have been racing old huskys for
23 years and i dont give a rats arse how it looks :-*
it looks good just like the bike :P
it must work he beat pigmy ;D
mick has a nice bike with a legal pipe end of story >:(
-
Well HB......I've got an old Tarabusi pistons that says your vision of what is a legal pipe is not correct... :-* to quote you...end of story.. ;D
-
Get over it Yammiefan. I'm over dealing with people putting an anal slant on everything in the rulebook. Move on mate, youre wrong..........deal with it.
-
Mark, I love the way that once someone puts up an alternative view ...some members of the sport...just throw up their hands and say....YOUR WRONG!!....I would even put up the necessary to have the CMXC rule on something like this issue...In the end the people who adminster the sport ( the riders) would probably need to either accept the MOMS or have them changed...nothing your pedantic view of the way the sport is adminstered (others like RR and GE) will ever find and even ground...gee you guys would have made great draft dodgers!! :-*
-
"Holy flamin exhaust pipes Batman. It looks good but is it legal?"
"Well Robin, that's a matter of opinion, but in the real world you have to ask.. does it really matter?"
"Yeah I guess your right again caped crusader, surely there are much more important things to bicker over."
-
Come on Brian.....You accuse me of being pedantic ??? In the end, who gives a flying fork. Maybe I should have prefaced my opinion with the old standard...'In my humble opinion' but I've been scritineering old bikes for a long time and I'd have no trouble passing Big Ks Husky. I've seen far worse, even from your side of the island.
*I don't understand your RR and GE reference. They were my friends and did more for this sport than anyone I know, what do you mean?
*You didn't respond to my hypothetical re:the Maico up pipe. I'm curious what your take is.
*I thought this shit ended years ago but I guess the flag still flys high in WA. Get over it and enjoy the sport Brian. I didn't think you of all people would stoop to Lawsons level of pedancy.
-
beautiful bike Mick :)
-
Beautifull bike Big k, love the pipe.
Dont be put off by some of the picky forum members, keep restoring these
lovely old bikes and posting pictures of your handywork.
Holeshot Bubby big k finished behind me that day, sorry big K the truth had to be told.
-
Yep, went nuts thinking I had Pigmy in a 3 lap race, only to be greeted by the last lap board instead of the chequered flag. I was stuffed by then and Pigmystein (monster on the track) got by. I couldn't make the pass again in the last lap. Hopefully with a bit more practise on the pre '75 bikes, the tables will be turned at Mirboo North. We had a HUGE amount of fun, and the pipe on my bike made absolutely no difference to that amount of fun. That's what it's all about isn't it?
Cheers,
K
-
As my closer on this..I've just looked through the MOMs and can't find any mention of what pipe is or isn't allowed regarding exhaust design. ??? Maybe there should be restrictions but as it is right now I couldn't find anything that excludes BigKs Husky pipe. Criticising a pipe because it doesn't fit into a particular aesthetic view shows a bit of intolerance in my view. My Maico and its decidedly modern pipe was racing at Coffs Harbour in the same class as Yammiefan yet he didn't notice (or care) that it didn't fit into his perspective on what's Kosher or not. Perhaps if my bike had been a Husky, things might have been different. I respect and admire Brians knowledge and dedication to Huskys but by declaring Big Ks Husky pipe ilegal from a photo and ignore a Maico with a far more radical pipe that's pitted right next door seems a little one make sensitive to me. ;)
Give my regards to your Dad Brian. ;D

Latest news: This bike fly's and is so easy to ride, regardless of what the pipe does. Went to a local modern meeting and rode in the 2502t & 4504t class on a modern jumpy track and manged a 6th place out of 14. Some of the younger guys were pisssed at getting hosed by "an old peice of shit", hee hee, while the older blokes were rapt to see it flying around. I rode my 390 in the veteran class and it also is a pleasure to ride with superb power & suspension. I would like some more brakes though. "Sounds unreal & looks like it goes alright", were the comments for the 390. On a sadder note the '74 CR250 mag expired on the 3rd lap of practise with a big end failure and will now be parked until the end of the season, after which it will undergo preparation for next year. The 400's coming for you Pigmystein.
Cheers,
K
