Hey all,
We are helping a mate get his 1983 XT550 running.
Now here's the questions;
Do you need a battery to get spark on this model? (We have disconnected the lighting as there are no plans for rego). It doesn't have a spark with the battery connected.
Does anybody have a wiring diagram for ignition only?
Currently getting no spark, what are some of the simple fault finding exercises on this model? (Plenty of compression - no spark at all (not even a weak spark).
What is the best way to test the ignition??
Any other tips of suggestions welcome.
Thanks in advance!!!

Check pulser coil and wires comming from it. Can be issues with them on those and the 600's. Coil falure and pinched/broken wires. Best way would be to follow test procedure in workshop manual.

get ol mate to hold the spark plug wire while you kick it. that a 100% reliable method for testing spark

Lol, we did do the electrocution test, unfortunately with no result!!!
So who is XT Master of spark??

I did have the same bike years back it went well.
Yes it did run with no battery .
But I never had elec probs with it at the time .
Is the earth wire ok on the frame ?
I've had times when the spark plug cap has been pulled off over and over and the cap to coil lead is chewed out , I just cut 10mm off the coil lead and re fit cap sometimes its the little things .
That's about all my elec back ground :o

Check if the CDI is wired in after the rec/reg that means the CDI is drawing 12v from the charging circuit to work. If it bypasses the rec/reg it's probably a AC system and doesn't need the battery.
You and Yamaha sparks :D :D :D

been years but should just a std yamy cdi system for this type of 4 poke single, similar to tt250 etc. Guessing red/white from pulser to box. brown & a red from each end of the source couil [cdi charge coil] into the box. Orange from box to plug coil. I'm lost after that. Probably a black with white tracer to the kill swich/ign switch/stop button. any black left over would be an earth & might be a black from stator to go to earth--& or from the box, not sure. sorry if that just confuses the issue. Won't be battery powered anyway.
