Title: MX400B
Post by: Carey W on June 29, 2016, 08:38:59 pm
I recently posted in the introductions section and will share a resto I'm doing on a MX400B. It looked a bit rough as the paint came off it when it was washed but all bearings, brakes, cables ect are in great condition. The bike sat covered with a tarp for 36 years until 4 weeks ago.
I'm after a silencer and sprocket cover / case for it if anyone can help, I will post photos of the resto and bike here so please feel free to offer help or advice.

The plastics are very chalky and I think beyond repair. Are the plastics from http://www.vmxunlimited.com/categories/Yamaha/MX/Plastics/ good quality reproductions or is there a better / cheaper option.

As she was when I picked it up.

Unfortunately the rims will be replaced with new did dirt stars due to a crack in the rear one. Probably happened 41 years ago in this race! It's bike #171.

Unfortunately mate VMXUNLIMITED is no more. Les has retired to rest 8) and the very best wishes to him for a long and happy retirement.

Prime8 Racing is now the go. They also have a great WEB page, excellent service and support the VMX / Vinduro community.

Those MX400B engines are FAST!

NOTED: Can not believe that the guy in the second last picture riding the Montesa has the make misspelt on his jersey MONTESSA  ::) WTF

Good spotting on the Montessa thing, his style looks ok though. Maybe his wife or mum got it wrong!

If you wish to race it have a look at the combined clutch and sprocket cover from John Tate - think they will fit the 400 also.  If you are interested I have a NOS air box for this model.

Cheers

Anyone know how to soften the original seat cover? As you can see the creases show up and it leaves creases when you get off the seat.

Fitted the eBay sprocket cover, 1st time I've used eBay. Got the cover, tank stickers and number plate for $120.
I just need to paint the tank and fit the stickers then tidy a few things up.

I only ask as I rode one years ago and concluded as you did that:1. they go allright. 2. pretty much everything else is marginal. brakes are ok. but turning, bumps and "using" all that power was difficult to say the least. they are a stunning beast to open up but make sure its pointed in the right direction and that there aren't two many bumps in front of you. :o

Hi Carey and Montessa,
Carey ... would you be able to direct Kevin 171 to this Facebook group please?  It's a series of about 30 photo albums from MX days 1970s in Victoria.
About 800 pix loaded so far ... they are unearthed photos from Stoneys Photos archive.
Each album carries about 20 to 100 photos of a specific event.  Includes short circuit as well.
It's also an avenue to reconnect with several Victorian racers from those years - who are following the Facebook group.
Cheers Carey

Made a new silencer on the weekend as the modified DT one was restricting it too much, it doesn't look as original but sounds better. Still looking for a stock one if anyone has one they want to part with. http://s1177.photobucket.com/user/noturbo/media/IMG_0868.mp4.html
