Title: CCM barrel markings

i have a CCM barrel with a "J" cast on the rhs about half way up. Can anyone tell me what this means?

Hi,
 The J that you have on your cylinder barrel is in fact an arm, If you look at it closely. CCM used this motif on a number of cylinders over the years.
 and it depended on what was available if f you got that type or a plain one (mine's a plain one) The old Premises that CCM started at had that motif painted on the building.

The castings were made by Armstrong thats why it has a muscular arm.

As far as I am aware the arm with the piston was on cylinder barrel's long before Armstrong became involved. Alan Clews called the first bikes "Clews Stroka's" and the casting denoted them as Big Singles.
Armstrong became involved in 1980. Prior to that Alan had used several different makes of shock absorbers, including Girling Koni (Big John Banks used them) and Clews made his own in the early days.
