Does anyone know of or use any free software for keeping track of rebuilds and restorations? Like a database for costs, parts needed, contacts etc? I'd like to have all info on hand for each bike I'm restoring and figure a database with all info on each build would be very handy.

Thanks gus. thats the best laugh Ive had all day. My sides are still hurting.
Most of the guys would be says "what..and leave evidence around"
-
Just set up something in Excel?

I sometimes try and keep a cross reference by bike in excel of genuine part number with what I’ve replaced it with, but sometimes the cash over the counter bearing shop doesn’t supply an invoice.
-
Would rather 3rd party... Excel can be a pain... I'll keep looking... And evidence? I take it u mean wives finding out how much a hobby costs? If that's a problem these 3 words may help..... Grow Some Balls.... Lol

Usually theres 2 types of people, one who does the work and one who does the paper/computer work. You must have great skills and be one of the rare multi skilled type, super organized I bet too.My database would consist of a lever from old mate down the road,a tube from a mates bike thats being stored in my shed and maybe a new spark plug from my local shop,a can of WD40 and some startyabastard.
-
Nah not really, sick of being disorganised, and have about 10 project bikes so looking for something to help me out with the paperwork side....

I just use MS Excel spread sheets for shopping lists and parts to find. I think it's excellent and easy to use and i know my way around that program very well. I definitely do not add up costs of purchases though.

NEVER keep receipts , cost of a decent resto will add up very quickly

I have my reasons.

excel - unless you can get someone to make up a small access database for you but then you will want it modified several times as you learn and progress. Don't know of any free off the shelf programs - sorry.
-
Maybe you could get a program from a MC dealer.......
That way you will have a cost on each and every part and time spent doing each job, then exaggerate each item by at least 30% to make sure you didn't miss anything!

I have never liked using excel or word either. I used newer versions of wordperfect and just use a table with formulas in it etc.
However I am now using word. They have tables and simple formulas so you could do something using them. Easier than excel.

I've just downloaded Visual Basics, will try and make one. Ive made a few small programs in the past so hopefully I can knock one out. If I'm successful I'll share it.

Excell is so easy and mine have look up and filters, you can even use the priovt table etc. profit / loss you create the work flow.

i still use an old database at work called "Approach" it used to be part of the Lotus suite. it was made for win 95 i think but still works on win 7 (and probably win 10)
probably freeware now i guess.

I’m not sure about freeware, but I have been able to coax it into life for a client on Win7.
Probably best left on win98 though and that should remain in the bin.

I have my reasons.
brave man I salute you :D

Access on windows is easy, well pretty much. on Mac Filemaker Pro15 the best I've used so far, costs a bit but has integration from iPhone to Mac desk top or laptop.
I've just done an app to track all my cattle births deaths sales and treatments only took a few hours and works great.
-
Another vote for either Excel or Access.
Nothing you can't do in Excel really.
I think if you're not too confident with Excel you're going to struggle with project management software

All info is on the net somewhere, have vb 2010 fired up and a few forms created and working under the debug command, just starting to work with the databases now..... I don't mind learning it keeps the brain young.... confused, but young....
