to be used on a 74 KTM - the 40 hole rear makes it a bit hard to buy rims, last one I got from Titman was a Morad -- top class rim but is was $400 approx. and that was 5 years ago.....

Why not Buchanan in US. I know the Ozi buck is worthless at the moment but they will drill nondimpled Takasago or Sun rim for you. What I dont like about rim from JTR is that they redrill already drilled rim to suit your hub. You have to buy spokes and nipples too cause the holes are too big for stock nipples. If you want to wreck your bike and maybe end up in wheel chair because of a cheap rim buy a cheap rim. Good luck

Would be good to hear if there are some good value rims (known brands) out there though. A pair of wheels around $ 800 is a lot to spend when that represents about a third of the bike's worth!

Yep can go Buchanan, but was just lookin for an alternative at a more reasonable price
Have sent an enquiry to Buchanan for a quote -- will see but it may be too much $

Every time someone mentions a cheep rim alternative its like "you cant use them they will explode and the fallout will kill everyone in a hundred kilometre radius"
Ive seen standard rims that were rotted till they were paper thin and cracked bent and buckled, missing spokes and those that were still on there so loose that the rim flaps side to side like a flag in the wind. The worse thing that happened was a flat tyre
Will the bike be jumping 50 feet high or maybe breaking the world land speed record.
Every chinese pod filtered pit bike are fitted with them.

If you have some doubts but want to try these Indian rims to save a bit of money , maybe try one on a rear wheel first, and see how it works .
The reason being if a rear wheel breaks, the crash you will have won't be anything like as bad as if a front wheel collapsed
A bit like using a really old Magnesium Hub, I would rather take a chance with one on the rear wheel but not the front

Not going to suit OP and probably limited vmx applications but Torpedo7 does 32h and 36h rims in various sizes including spokes and nipples for $126.00

Problem with the Torp7 rims blackjack is that they are drilled for disc hubs and the nipple holes are enormous. I say that speaking from lacing up a couple of IT hubs.

Fred, did you get the IT wheels built using top rims? I have seen oversized nipples available around the traps, in the UK IIRC.

Nah, I laced them up using Kedo spokes from "The Vintage Spoke" which are stainless but supposed to be original sized and I used the Torpedo7 rims.
More of an experiment than anything as I am struggling to justify the $500 per wheel to get them done professionally on a $700 bike. Haven't revisited the experiment recently, I just walk past the shiney front wheel and think. "need to get back to that"

I've got Torpedo7 rims on my CZ, rear had to redrilled to suit but probably would have anyway because I'm using buchannan spokes which have larger nipples from what I can tell. Front was pretty close even with the size difference of the 2 sides of the hub

Those KEDO spokes are available in Aussie from Kedo direct if you dont want to pay international shipping from vintage spoke USA.
But while I am at it I must give Bruce from Fastline spokes (Broadford, Vic) a plug.
Got some spokes from him recently made from samples, great price for butted stainless spokes like OEM, delivered interstate no probs and easy to communicate with via phone.
First class service and products.
I have also bought some cheapy rims from Ebay via Melbourne via China at about $80 Aussie a piece. I consider these to be fit for small capacity bikes that will not leave the ground more than a few inches with a lightweight rider or just for show. I think they are veeerryy cheep, but fine for the kids RM100 bush basher.

I contacted torpedo7 and their rims require 8mm spoke nipples and the spokes i need (76 cr250m) are 6mm. So no go for me. Unless there are other spokes I can use?

Roost,just order your CR spoke set/s to have 8mm nipples rather than the std 6mm ones, :P

You can usually get the 8mm ones in aluminium, a bit of weight saving and "works bike" cred. ;)

Anyone know of a market for nipple sleeves? 6mm to 8mm? geez that sounds pornographic.

just an update I'm going to hit the button and by the rims from India – but have also been following up with the Indians (ha ha) who sell spokes in kits for all sorts of old British bikes and the Enfield bullets, asked one of them (by way of eBay messaging) if they would do different lengths and he came back saying "just tell us what you want", so a bit more head scratching but I'm going to give them a try

So the site with the larger, er, nipples, would mean i could use them on the normal spokes? So i could buy the normal spoke set (on ebay) and then use these 8mm nipples so i could run the torpedo7 rims?

The SM pro nipples are for 9 or 8G thread spokes. I have no idea if they will suit the spokes you are getting. If they (spokes) are metric threaded they wont. I do not see much new metric spokes these days. The SM pro site lists the OD of the nipples. The spoke holes in rims need to be a little bigger than this.
use this to work out if you have metric or imperial. For example 9G and 3.5mm are not interchangeable. I got caught once when i wanted to fit some aftermarket 9g nipples to some OEM PE or RM spokes but they do not fit.

Sorry for the hijack but does anyone know where to buy blank spokes? I have a threader and make my own spokes but have run out of all my London Trading blanks. I should have bought up big, they were about $10 for a hundred, with nipples, and the ones I made years ago are still nice and bright.

London Trading, gee that was a long time ago!. Their left overs went to Conco and then Conco teamed with McLeods. You could still buy the spokes from McLeods maybe 8-10 years ago. I doubt they have them anymore as they got out of parts like that. I have not bought any for ages. Most people just want stainless these days.

Perhaps it is urban myth but I prefer steel spokes over stainless.
Steel spokes seem to have a bit more stretch in them and to my mind a spoked wheel has to have some flexibility so it is better off with spokes that can give a little
But it may simply be that plain steel spokes with cad plating are easier to work with for an amateur like me because they have got a wider range of acceptable "tightness", because when you are tightening up a stainless poke it seems to get tight all of a sudden – there is no give or stretch in the stainless spoke particularly those ones nearly the thickness of a pencil that they seem to want to sell you these days
