Guys,
Anyone have any experience with buying rod kits the 125?
Is there an aftermarket rod kit for these if oem unavailable?
Any assistance welcomed.

The rod kit is the same from 1975 to 1979 , part number 16 10 383 01
A rod from an 80 model might even fit but you would need to verify that as I don't have the 1980 125 parts book

Many parts books on-line at Café Husky.. Vintage left kickers , tech reference... 1980 125 is there ..and many many more

I could use a rod for one as well, must get onto that. They are not slow, bit slower revving & not peaky like an oriental, but certainly not slow. The handling is superb.

Just done a rebuild on one of those and managed to repair the original but I did look into the possibility of using a Honda rod that has the same pin and small end diameters but it is about 3mm longer and the width is different at both ends.
With a spacer under the barrel and some other mods it could be used if the original is not available or very expensive.

May even look into replacing the pin and big end bearing if i can find one that match up.

KTM 85 SX for the pin, it is 2mm shorter but has a smaller end radius and will work. Bearing will be the issue but you may be able to get new rollers from a bearing shop. The rollers are 3mm x 9.5mm from memory.

Pin & bearing easily sourced locally, genuine rod out of Sweden or maybe a Euro rod out of USA. The Honda rod conversion would be a painful exercise.

Would depend on the cost of the genuine parts. The Honda ProX rod kit $142 a spacer plate and a bit of crank wheel machining about $120.
How much for the Husky genuine kit?

Not real cheep for a rod kit. If I had one it would get Honda kit and wouldn't have to wait for an OS delivery.

I've had a long hard look at the rod exchange thing, not as simple as it sounds, plus 3mm is an awful lot of extra stroke to compensate for. Each to their own though.

To convert you would be changing it to a setup with thrust washers at the crank end and that is quite a simple machining process to reduce the width of the crank wheels around the pin hole. The small end is narrower so no change is need there other than making sure that the bearing used is the correct width for the gudgeon pin boses. The 3mm extra rod length has no effect on the stroke it just moves the piston 3mm higher which is were the spacer does it's job. The stroke is govened only by the offset of the crank pin in the crankshaft and that is not being altered.
All of the work to change is a once only job and if a new rod is need down the track it is only a $142 rod kit needed.
