Title: 1971 TM400 Engine Gasket Sealer
Post by: TIKI on December 05, 2015, 09:30:17 pm
Hello All,

I am assembling a 1971 TM400 engine and wondering if gasket sealer is recommended on the new gasket between the 2 case halves, if so what product? There are no major imperfections but a few very light nicks in the aluminum.  I am more concerned with an air leak in the crankcase than transmission oil leak. I have the service manual which is very vague at best. Thanks Randy

loctite 515
3 bond
aviation gasket sealant
no matter what you use still put the gasket in, for the correct spacing of gear box shaft shims ;)

Thanks  for the replies guy’s. I guess I’m a little paranoid as I have not split the cases before. I have a can of Permatex spray copper and I think I will spray a light coat on each side of the gasket and call it good. The general consensus is with a gasket I really don’t need any sealer at all.

Wurth have a Threebond type instant gasket in a small pressure pack, much cheaper, easier to apply and no more wastage due to going off in the tube or nozzle. Think it was $36 for 300g can and trigger nozzle

Keep your gasket goo's in the beer fridge, in a plastic bag with a banana and they won't go off in the tube.
Good tip , I rember as a kid dad saying to mates if they have a wining diff put a banana in it  ::)
He tryed it on a old ford transit van it didn't work  ;D

The center cases don't need any sealer if the OEM gasket is being fitted and their flatness verified.
The gasket is the sealer- and a shim.
Any minor knicks can be scraped or filed.
