Hello everyone.
First post. I have a chance to pick up a 1982 XL-125 for $50.00. The motor spins free but doesn't run. Are there engine and chassis mods that could kick it up a few notches without breaking the bank? This is totally for the sheer fun of it.

P.s. How do I download photos?

no.
you can look for a big bore kit but they are hard to find. its an XL 125 and will respond to buckets of cash but better to spend it on an xr 200. if its tidy to look at, a set of good rear shox, reco the motor and make sure all the bearings and bushes are tight, its a nice little bike to ride. if you are thinking of giving it a hammering..... get an XR 200, its an xl 125 Honda spent buckets of cash on.....

So if a guy actually WANTED to spend buckets of cash............ Do you have any suggestions on what companies might exist that hot rod these motors? I would like to keep it as close to 125cc if possible.

Maybe try Powroll, with caution. Do some in depth research of them first. I have heard a lot of horror stories of people sending cranks to them and either never getting them back or the job taking a very long time. they are not like the company they were in the 70's. They also disconnected their phone line and you had to get their secret phone number from an insider on the forums that went direct to the workshop for any chance of contacting them. You can forget answers to emails. This was a few years back though. I wanted a stroker crank but i gave up on the idea of that when i heard what they became like and did not want to risk it. Luckily i found a fresh already stroked crank here which was done back in the 70's and never fitted.
R&D might do HD valve springs. Try Megacycle or Webbcams for a camshaft.

Have a look at these threads:

The first thing most people do to these little Hondas is increase the capacity. The extra CC's make all the difference.
It is possible to get them out to almost 250 CC and over 200 with a bore kit (and crank case machining).

No Honda expert here. Would a 200 just bolt in place?

yeah the 200 motor just bolts in,the wrecker here put a 200 motor in a cb125 the model with a cable front disc brake.he said the owner was very happy with the power increase that the bigger motor gave it!
