Rob Andrews site is very nice.To a man like me who is under 40 (ok just) it really brings back some fond memories from my 'golden era' of bikes 1980-1990.

brilliant site celebrating the most interesting decade in MX bike development , in the space of a decade MX bikes went from twin shocked ,aircooled , drum braked dinosaurs to single shocked , perimeter framed , watercooled , powervalved , inverted fork equipped forerunners of the modern MX bike, cool , very cool

One thing that has always struck me is handbar position, I read a story about the position of Ricky Carmichael's bars and how the bloke testing his bike thought they put the bars back for transport until he (Ricky) got on the bike and rode off!! looking at the link Doc has given us and see the differing bar position and heights (the shot of Hannah on 39).

So I know we are getting off the topic but what is everyone's thoughts?? I have mine back but I am short not like Hannah who would tower over me (and I don't have mine that far back) we will get back to the thread later ;D

What works for who and why??

I really like the Rob Andrews site Dave. It's superbly put together.  My learned colleague Magoos sad misconceptions of my MX likes and dislikes aside, I think that era of motocross is the greatest in our history. The bikes were as individual as the riders, unlike the post 1995 era where the riders, bikes and races are straight out of the cookie cutter. I lost interest when the 500 class lost its status as the # 1 class. There's some great photos on the site Doc put up as well. All good.

Speaking of Magoo, are you up for the BBQ on Aug16 old chum? Let me or the host know so we know how much boutique VB we need to buy........

Did I hear the mention of Vomit Bombs? I'm there big fella, looking forward to it.
I'm in total agreement with you in regards to the 500 class. I also don't think it's too much of a coincidence that Mr MX didn't last very long after they dropped the big bores. There's an opening for a new series replacing the Thumper Nats, the 2 stroke Nats maybe.

'cepting a 70's works bike eh Holeshot! ;)  :D

we all seem to love the bikes we grew up with so does this mean in the year 2030 that the middle aged buyers with all the cash will be chasing the vintage Chinese cheapies!! I pity the younger generation in this regard..they missed all the classics! :D

The web link in Daves first post has this story from Rob Andrews as a young racer on a '78 Maico MC125 in Britain:

One day I was racing a two-day event at Claverley and the gear shaft snapped again. We rushed to fix it between races but just couldn’t get it done in time and the experts took off for the next race with me still in the pits. We got the bike running and I raced down to the line, joining the race as the first 6 or 7 experts were off on their second lap. Over the next 15 minutes I overtook all the leading riders, coming up behind the race leader on the last lap. I overtook the leader, thereby un-lapping myself on that last circuit. When I came around to the finish I received the last lap flag again! I can’t imagine that a situation like that can have happened many times before – receiving the last lap flag twice!

Sadly Namur is no longer on the GP list.  First time i was there was 89  when leisk rode well. In 2004 they held the first Monte Namur on the friday preceeding the GP, About 100 Twinshocks gathered in the Town of Namur probably 6km from the citadelle{track} Amongst them were a few famous old blokes!  Carlquvist on his YZM 1980 500 yam doing burnouts in the high st, J Robert, Lackey on his 1980KXSR ,Noyce on a 360 mugen,H Everts,Thorpe,Jobe, plus a load i have forgotton. Anyway we were led away from a carpark in central namur by police on motorcycles and were led of thru namur city centre and finaly rising up to the citadelle, more than a few wheelies were popped on the way,  guess who was first into the citadelle ;D     If any of you guys are ever in europe at anytime of the year go see the citadelle.

Fantastic stuff, the last time I went to UK OS was when I was 13 and got busted for picking flowers out of a park.Take the girl out of the country, but not the country out of the girl. ;D
Thanks for that Dave ,its always great to get down to some grass roots of other countries and the basics of where our vmx history lies.
We are still such a new land.(bring on more seacontainers of pre75 bikes  :D ;D :D)
cheers

Done so far?! You have more? Cool; I grew up reading the American and Australian MX/dirt magazines so the volume of European stories (and photos in particular) were a bit thin on the ground.
Lovin' it all. Don't stop now... ;)
