Hi fellow VMXers
I purchased a 1983 copy of Trail and Track. It has the IT490 and YZ125K in it. Seller said it was in perfect nick. It finally arrived and when i opened it, two pages either side of the center poster were missing including all but one page of the YZ125 test. Unbelievable!! I paid $33 for the mag as its so rare and i really wanted that test to add to my collection. I contacted the seller "Pre85 Parts" and he just laughed in my face and said he had a photocopy of the whole magazine. I didn't want to get into a barny about copyright and i told him i buy thousands of dollars worth of parts on Ebay yearly and never have a problem and also i wouldn't create a commotion over $33. Christ, i bought the RM80N and YZ125K Oz model on Ebay.
Anyway i have put in a return request due to item not being as described. I will let you know how it shapes up as the seller is quite a smug fugger.

Anyone else have similar stories to tell?
Cheers,
Alex

Its March 1983.
Emails through the Ebay resolution centre have been flying backwards and forwards. Its not the lousy $33, its the principle. He did post up pix of the missing pages and there is a great poster of the 125K in colour. But those pages were missing when sent. Just the last page of the K test is still in there. If i was going to cut pages out of a classic VMX mag and ruin it, would i not cut out the entire test? Anyway, i think he has agreed for me to send it back for some sort of refund but he seems to believe it was me. Very weird.
In the resolution centre, he posted up pix of the missing pages... here is the poster. Wish i could scan it in properly but fork knows where it went....

Alex - It is just the centre spread picture that is missing. The rest of the test is on the backsides of the poster. Will check tonight but pretty sure I have a extra copy of that mag somewhere that you can have.

Similar story you say??? Ha, a while back I bought myself a TIG welder and was unable to find not one person either able to or prepared to teach me how to use it. So onto the web and on ebay is offered a DVD "how to TIG weld"(new). Excellent I think and I buy it. After waiting weeks and weeks it finally arrives.(had to come all the way from QLD to Vic).I open up the package and here is a used ,scratched item covered in thumb prints. I'm straight back to the seller and there is no way that she would accept the fact that she was responsible. I offered to send the old one back in exchange for a NEW one. No way she says that the old one is as you described "I personally copied it myself" and it was perfect when I sent it. Must have been damaged by Aus Post. Never pursued it any further only due to the fact that it was cheap and I don't need the hassles over a few bucks. Yep they're out there alright.
-
We need to name and shame .
-
Paco, yep name and shame would be the way to go but it may cause a few issues for Graeme M down the line. Live and learn I guess. Still haven't used the TIG and as I'm culling the bike collection( 3 project to do/finish then getting out of the bikes entirely) I have a brand new machine to sell.600 bucks gets it and I'll be selling it at a loss. Anyone interested it's in Bendigo.
-
Thanks Mposs, that would be absolutely brilliant. The seller agreed to a refund, but has now gone to Ebay and is fighting it as he has strong "evidence" that all the pics were in the mag, as he took pictures of them. He may of took pictures of the pages, but that centre YZ125K poster (the 4 missing pages) were not in the package when i opened it.

It's a game the scammers play. They know perfectly well that they've posted off dodgy crap, they just play games until the buyer gives up.
I've been caught four times (three sellers - inc one that changed his username and managed to get me twice). The three sellers had a few things in common:
1. Sell lots of stuff, usually mixed bag, low value stuff that's clearly not just cleaning out the shed;
2. Lots of bad feedback, although a lot if it is hidden as negative comments in "positive feedback". Always check the comments, not just the feedback percentage!
3. Any Negative feedback is met with denial/blame the buyer/blame AusPost. It's one thing to cop a dickhead buyer, but you know there's an issue when twenty people have complained, and the seller never once says "yep, sorry, sent the wrong thing" or "here's the tracking number" (etc), but ALWAYS says "was working perfectly when sent" or similar.
They're the three big warning signs. Also check for LOTS of positive feedback from the one buyer - it's clearly another account designed specifically to boost their positive:negative ratio.
They count on people saying "it's only $33, I can't be bothered". If you can't get a refund, then still make them work for their ill-gotten gains.

Sorry to hear of the unscrupulous sellers on eBay but I'd like to temporarily hijack your thread. I hope someone can post the cover of this issue as it's me riding the bike in the covershot. I was going to get the cover framed and then somehow managed to lose the mounted picture before I got around to framing it.
Dave Lucas from Annand and Thompson leant me the bike for a week so I could do the write up. We took it up to Mt Glorious then through to Dayboro, our usual weekend loop, and let about half a dozen more emminent riders than me try it out. At that point it was the only one in the country and hadn't been released. I know John Hansen and Bill Jackson rode it. Pretty sure Jeff Petler, John Zordon and Gordon also were around that weekend.
Great bike and fantastic power and comfort. It was like an armchair ride.
Thanks for dredging up some memories.

Hi PBMGold, i still have the magazine here waiting to be shipped back if and when i can, so i have managed to scan the cover for you.
Thats a great story and a good pic. Hope you like it,

Works both ways. I sold a pretty rare VMX item to a guy in UK. He took a long time to respond to emails & longer to pay (clearly having second thoughts). Now that he has the item he wants to return it for a refund and is using the not as described option (it's exactly as described as per photo's), so now it will be a Paypal/eBay shit fight. I'm happy to refund the money for the item but they say I should refund in full including postage, but I don't think I should wear $60 postage because he wanted to have a look. These things are always geared toward favouring the buyer (can't leave a buyer bad feedback), so no doubt I'll cop it up the arse. Paypal have already withheld the payment. Whinging Poms is ringing true.

Sorry to hear that BigK. I told the buyer he could keep the shipping that he charged me ($9 for a mag). Its hard for buyers and sellers when things go belly up. Hope you get your one sorted.
Cheers,
Alex

BigK,see it's always better when you deal locally. if i'd known about the arse bit we could have done a much better deal :-*

Yep. I was very nearly caught by a dickhead buyer (who appeared to have multiple personality disorder) - both PayPal and eBay automatically assumed I was in the wrong, and did nothing to actually resolve the problem. Their idea of dispute resolution was to tell me to refund his money after the item had been sent...

Hi Alex,
If your interest was in the YZ, l can scan this ADB test for you.

Bigk, even if you do not refund him, ebay will step in offer a full refund out of their own pockets.

OH man kdxgeoff... that's like finding the holy grail. I would love a scanned copy of that test and it would be much appreciated. I will PM you my email address.

but if you don't pay up then Ebay/Paypal will sit by the side and wait until your next lot of funds and get their money back out of your account.

Thanks Alex. Boy, did that take me back. I can't believe I had a wranger beard, what was I thinking.
I noticed that the magazine cost $1.50. I remember I was paid about $30 for the article and the pictures. The story was typed on an old bank typewriter and used carbon paper so I had a copy of the story. The stories had to be typed with double line spacing so that Les Swallow, the editor and owner of Trail and Track could write any changes before he sent it to the typesetters.
Don't we take computers and word processors for granted.
The pictures were taken by my wife at the time and I don't know how many times I had to yell "Now" to get her to press the shutter at the time. I think I was using a medium format Rolleiflex twin lens camera so the quality should have been outstanding but sadly she moved the focus so the shot isn't super sharp. There was no way I was going NOT getting my pic on the cover. Sharp photos and Pulitzer prize journalism weren't ever a high priority at Trail and Track anyway. I think that Les made most of his money from the Mail Order part of the mag and stories and pictures were just fillers for the real purpose of the magazine. Despite that, it was a great experience and Les was very generous to publish a young kid with more bluster than talent.
-
Cool story. When i get a chance, i will scan up the rest of the story too. Looking through the trail and track mag, the print quality was pretty poor back then, but most riders were just glad to have some good aussie rags to read.
-
I'm thinking I should go to my folks place and recover all of the ADB mags I subscribed to with paper round money and see how many I have.
-
I did up a small article on my Mugen kitted CR250 in 81 - boy was I over the moon when T&T published it word for word and ordinary photos as well. Well back in the day now ;D
-
Alex, the guy you bought that Trail & Track is a absolute moron. I had some communication via Facebook with him about some of his mags as I was interested but he just kept playing games and it doesn't surprise me you are having dramas getting a refund from the goose.
Its unfortunate for you but keep persevering with it. I am sure there are more genuine helpful people on here that will help.

Adam, interesting to hear that Pre85 can be a bit of a moron. I have the same impression. A member on this forum has a copy of the same issue of Trail and Track i purchased and was kind enough to scan the pages i was missing. So, the seller can have his mag back. Unfortunately, he is not communicating with me and refuses to negotiate an amicable result. I can understand his view, but jeez, just send the whole magazine next time!!
-
I was getting a lot of conflicting emails from Ebay. Wait until such a date, click this, do that etc... i ended up ringing customer support. Definitely a positive experience. I only waited 1 minute and the rep sorted the problem straight away. She said Ebay would cover the cost and repay me. I checked my Paypal account and the money was in there within 5 minutes. I also get to keep the magazine, minus the 4 pages!
Just be aware that in my opinion and due to my own circumstances, i believe Pre85parts on Ebay to be a bit shonky.
Cheers,
Alex

Works both ways, though.
I would like to quote one of today’s great minds, Mr. William Ray Engvall Jr when I say: I just hate stupid people! They should have to wear a sign that says “I’m stupid!”.
That way you wouldn’t rely on them, would you? You wouldn’t ask them anything, you’d be like “Excuse me...oops, never mind, I didn’t see your sign.”
Like before my wife and I moved from Sydney to Brisbane, our house was full of boxes, there was a U-haul truck in our driveway. My friend comes over and goes “Are you moving?” “Nope...no, we just pack our stuff up once or twice a week, to see how many boxes it takes. Here’s your sign!”
Or when I was stuck in traffic the other day! A truck had wedged it’s trailer under a bridge and traffic was backed up for miles. A motorcycle copper arrives, walks up to the truckie and goes “Got your truck stuck?” Without missing a beat the truckie goes “Nope, I was delivering this overpass and ran out gas...here’s your sign!”
That’s why there are warning labels on products, it’s not for us, it’s for stupid people. Let me give you a few examples.
On a tube of the haemorrhoid ointment Preparation H it says in big bold letters “Do not take this orally!” But you know, that somebody wrote them a letter:
“Dear Preparation H, I ate this whole dang tube but I still got these haemorrhoids! My mouth is sooo small...I can barely eat a jelly bean...but I can whistle real good.”
I bought a receiver the other day, and it had those satchels with drying agent in the box. You know, what is printed on them! “Do Not Eat This”. Really? Have you ever bought a piece of stereo equipment, thinking there might be something to eat in there? But somebody went “Well loooook! I got a receiver and a pack of Chiclets! I got music and gum!!!
On the package of a fanbelt it says “When you change the fanbelt, be sure to shut the motor off first!”
Wouldn’t you love to have been there, when that first happened? Guy comes in the house, hands all cut up...”Hey Earl, what happened?” “Uuuhhh, I’m gonna give you boys a little tip: when you change the fanbelt, you better shut that motor off first...you can’t stop it with your hands, man...it’s like a machine or something...!”
I listed these items on Ebay the other day (see #252130040095):
Brisbane: Adidas Climalite bulk shirts & shorts sizes S, 11-12Y near new
Seller Notes: “The red shirt has some runners so I am throwing it in foc. It is not part of the auction. Let me know if you don't want it.”
You are bidding on 3 Adidas shirts size S, 1 pair of Adidas shorts (label removed, I am guessing size 10) and 1 pair of Veto shorts, size 10. All Adidas clothes are Climalite, the Veto shorts are of a similar material. All are in excellent, near new condition. You will also receive the red Adidas Climalite shirt (11-12Y), which has some runners, see picture. Let me know if you don't want it.
Our home is smoke free but not pet free, but our pets have never worn any of these clothes. Our son grows like a weed and has worn most of these only a few times, if at all.
Buyer to make contact within 24 hours or the item will be relisted. Pick up from 4520 Highvale or postage.
HAPPY BIDDING!
Along comes an Ebayer, turbotool2013, no wait, tooltoohey2013 and buys the items for $30 incl. free shipping to Aldinga Beach, SA.
Upon receipt of the items, tooltoohey2013 leaves negative feedback and then sends me this message:
“Pretty disappointed in your items.. All clothes varied in sizes that you had deck scribed to be .. Red too had a pull in the front of the shirt - worthless- these items were far from the near new as described .. Will not use you as a purchasing source again.. Very unhappy”
See!!! If he’d been wearing a sign, I could have stopped him!
I could have said: “Now you are not going to understand this but...when I wrote ““The red shirt has some runners so I am throwing it in foc. It is not part of the auction. Let me know if you don't want it.”, what I really meant to say was that the red shirt has some runners so I am throwing it in foc, it is not part of the auction and to let me know if you don't want it.
But you know who the real idiot is? ME...coz I gave turbotool2013 positive feedback.
Somebody get me a sign!

That pretty much sums up the problem with society these days..... Ya can't give the stupid oxygen thieves a lesson without getting into all sorts of problems with our judicial system.

Had two experiences recently.
1) Searched high and low to find a 18 mm sparkplug tube spanner. SCA didn't have them (every size but) however a Chinese supplier had them on eBay for $5 each with free postage. Seems reasonable so ordered 2. Arrived today and won't fit without hammering over the hex, wall thickness so thin they buckle when turned and the holes to poke the rod through to turn them don't line up. Straight in the bin! You get what you pay for - if you're lucky!
Can anyone suggest a supplier of decent 18 mm sparkplug tube wrench. There is no room on the aircooled Husky 510 to use a regular long series 18 mm socket - diameter too large.
2) Bought some fancy pants RHK folding levers off F1Moto from Appin on eBay. Photos and description showed exactly what I wanted - cable operated, perch mount and OTF adjuster. Add said it was for a Husaberg FE 550 but I didn't care what it was for - just knew it would work on my bike. They sent me a hydraulic lever that was nothing like the listings picture or description. I told them they sent the wrong thing. They assured me it was the right lever for the Husaberg and it was just the photo that was wrong. I begged to differ and told them it was their mistake and I could see on their website that they stocked what I wanted and what was shown in the photo in the eBay listing. They said I would need to pay more as that item was more expensive than the one I bought. I have asked them to stand behind their listing and supply the part they showed in the ad. I will see what happens but I sense an eBay dispute coming on. Businesses like this should put the customer first and if they screw up then make it right ...not make it the customers problem. One thing for sure my custom will never go there again and others will be told 8) if they don't do the right thing!
-
Turn down the OD of an ordinary plug wrench.
