Thanks G, I will pass that on, I thought that may have been the case as I had a couple of early Montys back in the dim, dark past. What model do you reckon it is ??

I think (pretty sure) it may be a '71 125MX well the frame seems to be and some of the running gear. The frame does not fit with a Gray Ghost 250 which had a single tube under the engine and a Husky like side air filter. The 125 & 250 engines from that period do look similar until they are side by side. What a great find
Check the chassis number if it starts with 18M then it is '71 125MX same as engine if it starts with 18M then 125cc

Thanks for your help, lads. The fella that owns it is part of The Old and Rooted MCC, to which I also belong, a longtime friend of mine, he speaks earlyish BMW quite well but not VMX. I have given him the link to this topic.

You can fit an early 247 Cota side cover to the bike and it has a sprocket cover but makes cleaning mud out difficult. Most people use the centre case extension above the chain run to mount an aluminium sprocket cover over the top chain run and most of the sprocket

I find it ironic, that in the day,you could not give away an 18M. The bike was too heavy, underpowered and had a 4 speed transmission. The Montesa dealer I worked at had two on the floor that sat for over a year until we slashed the price to $650.00 USD. Now they are collectable! Who knew.....
