Do the later model aluminum TT500 swing arms fit straight in to the earlier XT500? And are they the same length? Cheers!

Yes straight in but need hub & brake plate from a TT,IT or YZ of same period, as it has no brake stay. Uses lug on arm. Also Brake pedal and rod different. But can use XT pedal with YZ brake rod have to modify pedal pivot.
Yes same lenght so no advantage. Better off with a White Bros arm( can use XT wheel) or 81 RM400 swingarm or a GMC arm.

True, I had the possibility of getting one cheap. Was just wondering if it was worth doing the swap.

twin shock klx250 swingers go in and the shock mounts are in the same spot as the 500 swinger just the klx one is 1 1/2 inches longer in length,you also need to machine up some weld in adaptors coz the klx s/arm pivet bolt is 1mm smaller and you need 1.5mm axlespacers to keep the chain lined up

Somewhere i read that KDX 250/400 swingarms are the same as the KLX too.
I think DR/SP500/400 swingarm is also a good option. They are 508mm from pivot to center of axle slot and 393mm from pivot to shock mount. The DR400, SP500 and DR500S are all box section steel and the DR500 X,Z,D 'enduro models' (mostly found in USA/Can but a few made it to other countries) are all alloy and the same dimensions as the steel version.

I've sold both DR400 and KLX arms for XT/TT 500s. As I recall the DR goes on by jacking the frame apart 1 or 2 mm [or taking out the shims behind the dust caps] and moving one of the swing arm shock pivots outboard to line up with the frame. The DR swingarm has no chain tensioner, merely a piece of bent metal to stop the chain from derailing [which is surprisingly effective] You will need new shocks though and best to ask someone who's done it what the right shock specs are. Save you an awful lot of pratting around

I have a TT500 swing arm and rear wheel here so thought I might make the change, no other real reason other than it looks cool with the alloy swing arm.
Am I going backwards putting on the non cush drive wheel??? It gets ridden on the road as well as dirt.

The tt500 don't run Cush drives like the xt ,
I have had tt500s for 25 years and never had gear box probs not running the Cush drive system .
I can't see it being a prob .
