Title: Insane postage cost from the UK.
Post by: Wombat on July 26, 2008, 09:04:17 am
Just scrolling through eBay for bits and pieces and I came across these 'Trials boots' in the UK.
Have a look at the blurb for postage:

UK POSTAGE COSTS £9.00
POSTAGE COST TO EUROPE £33.00 TO £43.00 DEPENDING ON DESTINATION.
POSTAGE TO USA & CANADA £56.00
POSTAGE TO AUSTRALIA £66.00

That equates to some $140 to $150 Aussie dollars just for postage!
Surely not?!

That postage cost could be correct, that's why i buy most of my stuff from the US as long as it's shipped with USPS. UPS and Fedex in the US have ridiculous prices to ship to Australia, so i always ask for USPS.

;D Try $300US for CR250m rear guard from Canada. :o

Hi and thanks for your inquiry. Because of the size of box required, this fender would be prohibitively expensive to ship overseas. $300.00 plus via surface. If that doesn't scare you off, let me know and I'll check into it further to get an exact price. Regards, Peter

golden rule is always double check the total shipping price with the seller b4 you bid. If you jump in the deep end then you expose yourself to any charge or freight method the seller see's fit. I was offered a super cheap part on ebay once with a ridiculous shipping price. I simply paid for the part and told them to throw it in the bin along with their rip off shipping policy. Lesson learned  ;)

The trail boots look a lot like Wellingtons, the NZed crew would probably have brands very simular.

Unbelievable that some people pay these high freight prices.
That is another part of VMX,waiting/finding a sorce for that special needed part.
cheers

Yeah probably, but I'm not looking to buy - I was just checking out various 'period pieces'.
eBay can be a good source for the 'hard to finds' but too many folk are out to skim on the postage!

this is just a joke.  what can we do collectively in AUS to show other countries that we wont be monopolised?  Do we have a member in TM/Marketing or Copywrite that can jump in?
I am mad,  and I am sick of it.  We need parts from overseas,  but we don't have the choice of slow post anymore!!

Very simple , put in your parcel as many parts as possible and then sell them here to share the costs.
Thats basically what every importer does . ;) ;)

It's like buying something here in oz,
just refuse to pay and say that you will buy from there opposition and if they don't come down on price ,too bad  :'(  just get it elsewhere.
Its them that is loosing, not you.
Be hard on them  >:( then they may think twice next time.
Unless your loaded and can afford to purchase the item.
In other words play them at there own game.

yup, I agree with YSS. I've just had a parcel shipped from the US for $50 and I consider it an absolute bargain! Contents are
2 complete stators with rotors
2 cdi units
3 numberplates
1 piston
1 kickstart lever
1 pair of gloves
1 60T rear sprocket

For my $50 I had a man weigh the box and place a sticker or 3 on it, he put it in a bag for another man to collect. It was then driven to the postal sorting centre God knows where. From there it was driven to the airport. It probably then went on a nice internal US flight to a major city which was probably LA. From there it was packed onto another plane which probably stopped over at tropical Hawaii and then flew the balance of the 8000 or so klm's across the pacific probably also stopping over in Auckland briefly before flying on to Sydney. I assume it then went from the international terminal to the domestic where it hopped aboard another plane and fly to brisbane. When it arrived in Brisbane a man took it off the plane and packed it into a truck. It then went for a drive to the sorting centre here at Northgate where another man it took it out of the truck and packed it into a delivery van. The man drove my parcel to my door and handed it to me in person in totally undamaged condition. Was this worth the $50 postage costs? You bet!  ;)

The only shipping problems I've had are out of the UK. The pricks love to charge you for every little extra like tape, cardboard box, foam packing etc. I bought a seat for a friends Fantic trials bike resto and for a 12 pound piece of moulded rubber he hit me 20 quid to send it. On top of that the prick tried to extort more money from me after buying the seat on 'Buy it Now' with PayPal by hitting me to pay his PayPal costs. We argued back and forth for days and in the end my mate told me to pay him his precious extra 2 quid just to get the seat. He then gave me a bad feedback but I reported him to eBay and they pulled the negative feedback. To make it worse, the dickhead sent the item by slow mail and when it got here five weeks later it had a 4 pound stamp on it.  He now has a big spiel on his items for sale saying that he'll never sell to Australia or New Zealand ever again as we are uneducated scum (his words). What a tosser!

Thats all good Doc, but a most of us have a USA contact like you do mate. We have to rely on seller to post things one by one = shits loads in post costs.

I just hade a good sample the other day . A forum member requested some dustseals for a foreign brand of shocks. I hade no stock , so I hade to order them of a rival company. They only cost $3.53 each +GST,but their minimum charge is $18.50 with Australian Air. If I went along with that , the two seals would have cost him $28 + GST +Postage to his adress.
In order to avoid being called a ripp off merchant , I decided to order 20 pieces , share the freight and supply the seals for $10.00 each.  (how long it will take to use the other 18 pieces , I dont know)
Today its not so much the cost of the initial part , its the handling , packaging , spending time on the phone or answer E-mails to sell a $5 part .
The answer to that is . for small items buy more then one piece or pay the price for someone to handle it .
It cost the company oversea the same to send one small piece or 10 or 100. But to the enduser that can make a huge difference.

But just getting back to the boots, these appear to be from an individual eBay Seller - not a Company.
The ideas for multi item parcels are all good advice (and that's a pretty decent thing Walter did re the dust seals).
It's the 'one off' items that are the killer, particularly from the UK.>:(
I just can't picture the Pommy Postal Worker asking old mate for the equivalent of $150 to send a parcel to OZ! :o

I have relos in the UK and we'd never receive a parcel at Christmas if it cost them $150 to send!

There are some good people ... & then there are some scum..  I bought a TM400 crank assy of Ebay for $35 & it cost me $30 from the US. The thing weighs half a ton so I thought that was a good price .  I ordered an alloy DG muffler from another site in the US for $75 and the thief charged $65 to ship something that weighs under 1/2 Kg ... not good.

Nothing worse than knowing you can buy at bargain prices OS....but get killed by the shipping. :(
As said before, generally US postage is pretty good, UK/Europe can be a handfull. The main bug is that a lot of postage is "Postage & HANDLING" Had a price from a major US company once for nearly USD$40.00 to ship a countershaft sprocket!!!! Other times had small packet stuff sent from UK for 5 bucks....go figure?? it's a minefield, but at least it keeps ya interested. ;)
