Title: How active are you ?
Post by: jimson on June 19, 2015, 10:45:38 pm
G'day viewers I was just wondering how active some of you woman & blokes are, let's say above 45years of age ? I deliver furniture for a living now & at 49 years I'm really starting to feel it. Having said that I couldn't imagine a desk job it would drive me up the wall. Jimson

Throw an underpowered  and very overweight  CT110 for 6 hours minimum  every week every day on an ever changing course and you start to get the idea, throw in a bit if rain  and skinny road tyres  on clay hills and it starts to get fun.  And they make you wear damn fluro yellow and your expected to be nice and smile.

no wonder i need a nap when i get home.

Fitness does improve your riding and so does the bike your riding, If your on a modern with suspension and brakes its almost cheating. Im a wee bit more than 49 and a desk job Hmm.. How much does it pay?

Ive hit the big five O and try to stay fit.  Lucky i have a job that helps me with that.  I have one of those LifeTrak watches so i can see where i am at as it tracks steps, kilometers, sleep etc.  I am Deck Crew on a gas platform so average 18 kilometers of walking up and down stairs a day. (26,000 steps).  I also get up at 4am and hit the gym for an hour every second day at work.  I dont eat rice, pasta, bread, spuds, sugar, fizzy drinks etc, and manage to stay at 80kg's.  Feel great!  As i sit at this computer, i checked my resting heart rate and its sitting on 48 bpm.  All this and i have an artificial aortic heart valve.  I fell sick when i was a kid with rheumatic fever and was left with a doggy valve.  Always had to stay fit to look after it.  Had open heart surgery at 32 and 48 to replace it.  Edwards bovine pericardium TFX3000... i feel bionic! Dont take any medication for anything, but do take iron, magnesium, fish oil, vitamin C every day.  Stay fit fella's.........

I have 53 coming up & have always been kept fit as my brain won't let me be idle. I like to remain "functionally fit" & still do cardio twice a day, 5 days a week & weights two days, however I have found that I don't have the recovery I did in my younger days & need to take 1 day a week of full rest. I  have also found that I can go about 6 weeks hard but then have to have an "easy" week of little or no exercise. I no longer lift heavy as I don't need to & really don't want any of the lower back & joint stress that can go with that. Most of it is in the mind & it's the mind that defeats people who struggle with training (or anything).

arthritic fingers are doing me in, losing strength in the upper body and carrying a couple too many k's that take weeks to banish and 1 good feed to find again.....spent the last month on a drill rig lugging bags of dirt about. has not helped the fingers but feeling a bit fresher all up. if I can get a ride a week I stay in reasonable shape but I haven't ridden since Christmas and two weeks a go I did 3 hrs on a fe 350 in q land and took 2 days to get over that! things could be worse! worked with a guy afew months ago, he was bobcat driving, mini excavating and we put up fences built retaining walls and did a 50 car carpark (I was on the wacker packer somehow..) he died last week. diagnosed with lung cancer a month ago and then his lung arteries burst and drowned the poor bastard.
we are here for a good time Not a long time.....

All of us dream of being a pro motorcycle rider pokey, you have made it to the big time ;D ;D,

My current job involves 50/50 driving & physical, I swim 1k one night a week which is not much for a good swimmer but enough for me who is just above dog paddle stage,my knees are stuffed from arthritis/MX etc so cannot run but I try to cycle at least once on the weekend if I am not dirt biking, Swimming sets you up with good lung capacity which helps heaps with other training but it does not seem to help too much with loosing weight :( :( :( :(, There is no substitute for being bike fit but riding more ;) that = time & money most of us don't have, don't let that stop ya though :)

Oh yeah I forgot, I also have a floor to ceiling punching ball, 3-5 minutes(depends on how fit I am at the time ;)) laying into it with a 1 min rest between for 1/2 an hour, great fun, good for hand eye coordination & also good stress relief, it's looked like a few different faces over time if ya get my drift ;), I started out with a punching bag but found it was jarring the crap outta my shoulders, the ball has much more give,no need for heavy boxing gloves either just a light pair of riggers gloves or mx gloves to save skin abrasion :)

62 body stuffed from a very physical life of 20 + yrs army, semi professional soccer, broken leg, knee reconstruction, stretch Achilles, extremely bad motor vehicle accident, bad arthritis, etc, etc.  Complaining, No just getting on with it.  Like most have problems getting out of bed on a Monday after riding, but still smiling.  Stop and you die a slow lonely old age life.  Even now came off the bike on the weekend, torn hammy, tennis elbow, care factor Zero, "I'll be back" Cheers!!

I thought I had problems, but after reading some of the posts,my pill controlled epilepsy,70,000hrs on tractors, and earthmovers wrecking havoc on my back,I feel lucky.I have to thank my first Tonic Clonic seizure at 46,for getting me back into bikes, waking up in an ambulance not knowing who or where I was, made me realise how much I missed riding, and ordered a new bike,as soon as could remember the dealers name. One of the symptoms of epilepsy is memory loss, and one of the side effects of AED's is memory loss,so I just call everyone "mate"

Trying to ride often is the best training, for mind and body,we have our own motocross track, which has a dam full of yellow belly, silver perch, and cod in the middle of it,the best of both worlds.

I'm just over 40 and always out of bead by 5.30am.  I'm a boilermaker(welder) and I get a smoko break and a half hour lunch, those are the only times I get to stop or sit down in a 10 hour day. I still move twice as fast as the apprentices thou. I work on my projects all weekend with yard maintenance and house duties mixed in, I ask some of the others at work what they did all weekend and they say "nothing, watched a movie, got bored and fell asleep on the couch".

At 77 I'm not to bad. Had a few things go wrong with my body over the years, mainly design faults I guess, appendix at  8 years, hernia at 40, radical prostate surgery at 58, onset of glaucoma at about 65  (thats a sneaky bastard get yourself checked.) another hernia about 74.
My neck went wrong about 18 months ago putting the gearbox back in my grandaughters car, turned out three worn out vertebrea in the neck is common amongst worn out motor mechanics.
Interesting thing, my Dr. said 'were's the x ray for your lower back?' Forgot about that, there never was any, turns out I've had another three damaged vertebrea lower back since I knocked the engoine mounts out of a u-turning FJ with my 750 R. Enfield in '62. I've slowed down a fair bit in the last couple of years, but really enjoy wringing the neck of my slider for as many laps as I can, as often as finances etc allow. Would like to have a ride at Dargle on my old RT1, but know what would happen as soon as the red haze hit from the start gate. Memories of my still sore hip from 'sorbent hill Moorebank '61 or so. See ya at the Nepean Charity meet! cheers pancho.

46 and nearly farked. 2 years back had some minor brain surgery that put me off work for 6 months, then early this year had a knee go bad and 5 months later lm still not out of the woods. must have killed a whole lot of "china men" in a past life!!!!

56 and farked, arthritis in the hands and knee, chronic back pain from a couple of cracked / crushed vertebra 30 odd years ago.
Still working as a high voltage operator / maintenance electrician, well normally, as I have been off work "sick" for the past 3 weeks after having suffered a "blackout". I stopped breathing while in bed and the wife (a nurse) resuscitated me and call triple 0. Been seeing a few specialists over the last few weeks and had a fortune worth of test done and they still haven't found out why happened that caused me to stop breathing and blackout.

Yesterday was the hardest day, I got the dreaded letter from the DTI informing me that my drivers/riders license has been suspended and I had to surrender my license.

Hopefully, the specialists will work out what happened to me and be able to sort out a treatment plan that will allow me to get my license back. Without a license I am screwed, I live in the country 13km from town, and 70km from where I work. I return to work next week, one of the other guys is going swing past my place and drive me to and from work, but this isn't going to be a viable option for too long.

57 with hypertension (pills), cholesterol (pills) diabetes type 2 ( pills) and gout, more bloody pills. Cateract at 40 due to 2 different eye colour, last 5 discs in back fused and laminated. Fused ankle and bone graft to left elbow. Arthritis in fingers due to disclocations. Sometimes feel a bit sorry for myself a sook out of having a ride and then I see an old mate from Nth Queensland buzzing around at Classic Dirt, not giving any thought to his missing leg. Have tattoo on arm stating " life isn't a rehearsal" something I need to live more to when I get old! ( funny thing my brain says I can do things like I used to, and then the bloody body hijacks the process)

Re the blackout,I am definitely not a doctor, but listen to what they say(coming from someone who has cut all his own casts off 3 broken legs),Don't drive,my seizures went on off 18 months before we got them sorted, and I didn't get my licence back for 2 years, reduced from HC to car and bike(at least I don't have to drive the fire truck any more).I know it seems tough, but the consequences of having a blackout while driving, are far worse. No excuses now for not getting on with the bike rebuild.

I'm only 25, not particularly fit, I smoke, nothing really wrong with me other than stuffed shoulders. Some nerve damage, loose ligaments and dodgy cartilage in my left shoulder, which has been out four times at last count. The right one's much the same but to a much smaller extent. It's been out once.

As for activity, I play cricket in the summer, ride dirtbikes and work as an auto dismantler. Officially I have half an hour for lunch, but more often than not it's stop for a bite, a drink and a dart then back into it.

I'm feeling better already reading what others are dealing with and overcoming! Old age is a privelige.

My dear old late mum had a hard life, as lots of single mothers with 3 or more kids did 'back in the day' She lasted 82 years.
The last few years she was still fairly active but was always complaining 'I hate being old'. I said to her getting old is an achievement in itself, there's a lot out there out to get you, if ones health hangs out you can get run over by a bus.

I forgot to mention in my earlier diatribe a few other complaints like when suddenly out of the blue  "Arthur" gets
hold of a foot and gives it an almighty sqeeze and twist!
cheers

I have little choice in the matter at present, the wife has taken time off work to act as my carer and chauffeur, and when your wife has been in the nursing profession for over 35 years, including being Director of Nursing in hospitals, you do as you are told.

The doctor who saw me when I was admitted to hospital had to report my blackout, even though it happened in bed, to the DTI as I hold a HR license, and it is compulsory to report such incidents for holders of heavy vehicle licenses. I have been told that once I have a diagnosis and a treatment/management plan in place then I can at least get my car/bike license back, probably with some restrictions / conditions. If my problem remains undiagnosed, then I have to have gone 6 months without a repeat incident to get my car/bike licences back, again with restrictions/conditions and 5 years to get my truck license.

Since I was released from hospital (2 June) the wife has had me doing all sorts of gardening and yard work as rehabilitation, which has taken up most of the last 3 weeks as we live on a 7.5 acre block. I have been allowed to spend some time in the shed on rainy day, and I have made a start towards cleaning up the mess that is the normal state, although to finish this would require me to be off work for a lot longer than I hope to be. I have had a a bit of time to play with a couple of project bikes, and have managed to get the 1972 Honda SL125 that I have been working on for way too long back to something looking like a bike.

If the chrome platers finish replating the rims this week, I should be able to get it back on its wheels within a few days.

I am off to Adelaide in a couple of hours time to see the neurologist again, and as strange as it sounds, I hope he has found something wrong with me as a result of last weeks battery of tests, that way they can start looking at a treatment/ management plan. If the neurologist comes up with a blank, it is off to the cardiologists for a whole lot more testing. The worst bit is that I feel fine, but I am basically stuck in limbo until some doctor can pinpoint what happened to me.

It is amazing the damage we have done over the years.  But I don't see anyone complaining, waste of time really, just get on with it.  Weekend before last, went over the handlebars (trip to Chiro) and then decided to tear a hamstring on another bike.  Ah well life is like that.  We still enjoy it, we still live it, cheers!!
