It's the first question I ask any Mechanic or so called Mechanic who walks in with a Resume
What's the torque setting on the sump plug of a 450 Motocrosser ?
What brand ? doesn't matter ?
Make a guess ?
What's your guess ?
Or a 250 2 smoke?

Son .... till it strips then back it off a 1/4 of a turn. When do I start ;D

Calibrated click method
1 click (elbow) - 40f/lbs
2 clicks (elbow and wrist) - 60f/lbs
As above with torn bicep - 80f/lbs
As above with shoulder dislocation - 100f/lbs
Burred knuckles you've gone too far!

Two young apprentices on the end of a 3/4 drive socket - 2" nut and 2 metres pipe extension on a bobcat gear box drive nut to undo. Wouldn't move!
Boss thought we were whimps! and had a go himself. No luck! Started using all different methods he had up his (older) sleeve and still no luck. So he cut the nut off!
Didn't have the heart at that point to tell him the manual said that it had to be torqued up to over 250ft/lbs.
A week later and about $500 in parts to fix bosses handy work and $500 on a torque multiplying tool and some free choice words, one apprentice had the jobs done.
It was known for quite a while that two young barred up apprentices could F#@K the boss every time. (The joke lasted for years!) ;) ;) ;)

Multi tool only counts if you display something you made using it...
My suggestion is a couple of humble 100 ml veterinarians syringes with a clear flex tube attachment.
Invaluable for decanting and adding any workshop fluid. Mine get used as everything from a burette for compression ratio checks to calibrated fork oil top ups/reductions to priming grumpy starting 2 strokes.

Reminds me of a bike shop owner that was telling me a few years back that he knew his new mechanic was going to be a dud when he saw him using a torque wrench as a breaker bar to undo an axle nut

Doh! Silly me.

I might be missing the joke here, but I'd suggest that any "mechanic" that needs to use a torque wrench on a sump plug isn't worth employing.
-
Yep a Torque Multiplier is Number 1, you can put 500ft/lbs on with an 1/2inch drive(just don't use your inch rattle gun on it),and a couple or 3 leathermen on your belt, especially the "Crunch" which has its own mini vice grip, great for undoing stubborn Phillips head screws.
You don't need a torque wrench on the sump plug, just belt the spanner a couple of times with a copper hammer(don't want to hurt the spanner),and if it leaks plug it with Quick Metal epoxy, easy.

Pack of sooks,
Not one guess,
And Nathan no joke estimate the cost of a replacement of a set of crank cases on a M109 at 900klms?
Just a little over $5k??
New crush washer $2.00
Using Torque Wrench additional 30 seconds

The title of this post is "Something we should all have in the shed"
If I was running or working in a commercial workshop yes I would use a torque wrench. If a thread strips and you aren't using one it is your fault. Simple as that.
For my own shed I don't use one all the time, but on certain things it pays too. eg the triple clamp bolts on USD forks. They have a lower torque so you don't restrict the movement in the tubes.
I still say the stocked beer fridge is more important.

the one thing everyone should have in the shed. "a concrete floor" i have a 3x6 bit of concrete the rest is dirt cant do anything. oh and don't forget a bike.
