Title: Base gasket
Post by: Digga on March 02, 2015, 11:31:58 pm
Whats the best way to fit the bottom gasket to prevent it sticking & tearing when you pull the barrel off again later? Coat the gasket in oil? grease? silicone?.......... ???

Is there a well proven secret method out there?

Very true that..... Coating the gasket with anything is a bad move as it will first off give a false torque reading and then slowly but surely lose torque.

You can coat them with grease if you want to, especialy if the barrel will come off a few times in a race meeting. I found a gasket paper that would handle that called 'Sentinel' from an industrial gasket supplier. I used the same gasket for about 3 months compressed from 0.5mm to 0.45mm the first time I torqued it down and there it stayed

Try two or more gaskets, better still bite ya lip, buy new one and replace it each time ;)

That comes from a bloke that at present has   four  base gaskets on his four stroke sidecar engine. Why? It is one simple way to adjust the compression ratio to various fuels octane ratings. Before reassembly, calculate required compression (That is the very technical part of your engines components you have to study and learn) and fit required amount of gaskets allowing for crush / tensioning of course. At present I can run 100 to 106 octane unleaded or avgas , 91 octane pump stuff would  be (is..) crappy. The engine is so built and modified that one base gasket only, is the basis for methanol fuel.

Agreed ! Lozza has spiked my memory, Sentinel is the go for making your gaskets.

Get off the farm bikes & get a real bike & you won't have to worry about it. You know it's true......
