Title: RM250X Help needed
Post by: Slow Pete on February 21, 2015, 04:50:18 pm
Hi all,
I bought a 81 RM250X the motor was rebuilt just prior.   Initially it was running  rich so I replaced the reeds as the old ones were not seating and leaving a gap.  Leaned if off a little on the needle clip, cleaned the carby out and it started first kick.   Took it out last weekend, running much better particularly in the lower revs  would still not rev out smoothly   but was much better.

Now wont start, threatened to a few times, has spark, rechecked the plug gap all ok.

I was a little concerned about the reed block seal when I put it back together because the rubber seal that is built in is 34, years old was almost going to put gasket goo on it but decided not to.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated or a good contact here in Perth.   The good weather is on its way and I don't want to miss it.

does a bit of petrol down the plug hole make it start, if yes, it's a carby problem

Thanks Lozza,
Rechecked everything before I staggered off to bed last night and No Spark.   That narrows it down a bit.

I used to race against a few guys who had RMX's and I can remember that they used to complain about unreliable electrics. Then one of the group stumbled onto an easily missed fault. It seems the block electrical connectors behind the headlight were prone to condensation and then corrosion, causing intermittent spark. Have you looked at them? If not, pull them apart and see if there is any corrosion on the pins. They used to clean them up or fit new connectors and then silicon all around the plugs. Seemed to fix their problems.

I happened to read the 1981 Motocross Actio test of the RM 250X last night and remember the part about it being jetted way too rich they had top rejet it down to a 35 pilot which suggests hard starting.
