heres my canam 250 8)
build date says 1975tnt
looks totally different :P
has different triple clamps
ceriani special forks 8)
shock angle is different but not modified
everything i can find on bike is canam
nothing looks modified ???
i love it cant wait to ride or should i say race her
just need plastics, muffler, cdi, and rear shocks 8)
will post a couple of photos ;D
somehow i dont think it will pass for pre 75 ::)
-
heres another shot ;D
-
and another ;D
-
one more ;D
i am going to build her into
a jimmy ellis replica :P
-
I think you need to build an LA Coliseum'ish Peristyle in your backyard to get the full effect. (you may also need a haircut ;D)
-
Holeshot,
Thats a nice bike. As far as I can tell from the photos, its a 75 MX2 frame (not TNT) w a slightly modified 74/75 TNT 125/175 swingarm (250 TNT had RHS sidestand & bottom shockmount further forward), MX2 RHS sidepanel & TNT LHS sidepanel w TNT pipe. Forks look like KTM cerianis.
I'm doing up a 175 MX2-based Qualifier-1 (77 vintage) not unlike that but w straight forklegs & the red 77 Qual tank.
Let me know how she handles when you try it pls.
-
I don't think that those forks are off a KTM if they are Ceriani specials like the ones that are on my '77 CR390 Husky. They have magnesium legs , where the KTM Cerianis are aluminium I think . The Ceriani specials are really good forks & Bengt Aberg used them on the '77 Yamaha HL500 .
-
they are definatly specials 8)
feel real good just like cartridge forks
front wheel and brake is canam
but triples are differant
she would be a nice handler
with good rear shocks ;D
-
Holeshot,
The frame, like Kawboy said, looks like an MX2 or '76 TNT. But the swingarm is from an MX3 or 1977 Qualifier and I say that because it appears to have none of the bracing that the 74 and 75 TNTs and MX2s had. The MX3s and '77 Qualifiers had no bracing at all, and have the lower shock mount is right back at the wheel spindle, just like yours. It's most likely a Qualifier swingarm since it has a sidestand.
The engine looks like a 175 MX2 or TNT- Just check the engine number.
The forks and whole front end are just like the ones on the bike in the picture which described as a 76/77 GP250 on Mike Ryders website at:
http://www.classiccanam.com/canam18.htm
I think they are magnesium 35mm Marzozzhis, just like the ones on the later orange Qualifiers, except painted black.
The pictures of the GP250 from Mike's site are these:

You bike looks to me like a GP250 or more likely one that someone has tried to make look like one. Looks pretty good too.
I've been building a 175 MX3 "Replica" for the Pre-78 class here in Sydney. I've ridden it a few times lately and it's quite a sweet handling little bike but underpowered to buggery in the 250 class but nice to ride. I have a 250 engine for it and hopefully I'll have that going later this year.
But you bike looks to be the real McCoy. A Jimmy Ellis replica indeed !
Enjoy !
Cheers,
Martin

Yes, I wondered if it was an MX3/Qualifier swingarm from 77 too for the same reasons Martin mentions above, but neither of them had a sidestand, so I tho't it most likely a modified TNT swingarm, bearing in mind they'd be much more readily available than MX3 or 77 Qual.
Either way, it looks the goods!

thanks noel that would be great if you have ;D
-
pre'78 I'd be inclined to go Russ otherwise you'd have to limit that lovely travel which in my eyes is a no no 8) nice bike! Had a '74 TNT250 briefly many moons ago and it really did go like a cut snake..if flew! It didn't stop too well but is certainly didn't lack any ponies ;D

Vintage Iron make perforated tank decals for the earlier model Can Ams . I know that some people have reservations about buying from them , but I haven't had any problems with them yet & so that is where I plan on buying my Can Am tank decals from .
