A quiet one that does not annoy the hell out of the two stroke riders.
The old four strokes don't need a muffler as good as the modern four strokes because they don't rev as high. But they still need a good muffler, not a home made token muffler.
GMC might be able to help.

I made baffles to suit my 500 four strokes they fit into the end of the pipes instead of huge heavy mufflers , mine work and sound good better than some of those old two stroke ear bleeding sounds.
They are like gmc hl500 internal baffle .
If this is not your style you could try old school black super trapp mufflers you can buy them new in the states around $80 , or a reverse mega phone type muffler but can be lound to , but I
Like lound pipes because they can here you coming ;D

Mine is about 100mm long jim , it doesn't have packing it's not super loud , not as loud as a straight through .
Try yours without packing and see how it works .
I have seen these baffles on eBay and some other sites .
But i got mine out of a old muffler and shorted it to suit.

thanks

I forgot to say my baffle fits snug in the end of the pipe so you can't put packing around it
Inside of mine has small notches of steel coming up to slow the air out .
Mine are held in at the end of pipe with one 6mm bolt, it gets every body because they thing it's a straight through and will be lound .
I have tried mufflers over the years but the baffle works fine performance wise to.
The bikes are tt500s.
On a Evo bike I had a while back I splashed out on a fmf muffler $500 odd bucks I had to shorten it some to look right on the bike , there's not much inside this muffler just a straight baffle and some packing a lot of money for stuff all .
If you pm me your email jim I can send some pics.

There's been lots written about how to effectively quieten down a big capacity 4T single.
Funnily enough, the solution is incredibly simple. Cheap, easily available and very effective - just slip on of these (http://whatscookingamerica.net/Vegetables/Russet_Potato.jpg) onto the tail pipe, and all of the problems go away.
