Looks like Dinsdale cleaned up on a Honda in 92 after Bultaco the year before..
I recognize a few of these bikes from the 93 Kembla nats.
-
American rider on the metisse, also number 0 is Mick Murnane on the champion frame Honda.
-
Vern Gracin #282 cheney/Triumph.
-
Very Grayson's bike is #40 Dave. Was that Mick's Honda or Darren Cheneys?
-
I worked on the track for that meet, was a great day!
-
Photo in bottom LH corner of top group looks like Ian Foster heading the pack.
-
Mick honda, well I don`t know who owned the cheney /triumph. I was racing that weekend. it was a great Australian Vintage Title. one day I may have that chance again to ride at a title.
its the atmosphere of the whole weekend and seeing what bikes people bring to ride and show them off, its a good.
-
129 riders listed in programme, Mike middleton usa on metisse bsa and also Marsh Runyan usa (one legged rider) had his 57' harley
sportster based bike there (cant find pics) and from NZ was Chris Drake.

Vern Gracin #282 cheney/Triumph.
You mean people raced Frankenbikes even back then, well gooolie ;)
-
Great historic shots, but not all from 1992.
282 is Doug Aitchison's 650 Cheney Triumph which I don't think competed until Cherabah Qld
40 is Vern Graysons 500 Cheney Triumph, first Nationals Tanunda 1995.
I made the red and black tent behind Vern's bike after 1996

So there were Frankenbikes everywhere, how did anyone cope

Simple.. There weren't as many forkwits in the sport back then

Must have been the second Cherabah meeting, not sure of the year. Maybe 97? Missed riding that with broken ankle and shoulder from a practise meeting a few weeks prior. Did the pit marshals job though, not as much fun as riding. Wasn't all bad as I lent my Hondamaico to John Kemp for a win in the 4stroke class.

I was at Ravo at the 2001 Nats (I think), my very first go at VMX on a '75 RM125S. I ran in the back of the pack about 5th from last but was having a ball until one of my club members berated my riding prowess and I quote, "you can't ride that thing for shit Mick, let me on it & I'll show you how to ride a 125". I was a bit taken aback so I let him ride the bike in the next race where he finished a firm LAST place by a considerable margin. It was all good though.

Good meeting the 92 Nats. Meet Firko at the caravan park while lapping a carb needle and seat with toothpaste to keep one bike running. Old racing mate Ronnie Dinsdale won everything he raced. Joke of the presentations was that the trophies where a large wooden cube with the plate mounted on top and that "Ronnie had all the firewood he needed for the winter!" Forget the racers name but he was just in front of where John Selva and I were camped with 2 beautiful Metisses. The green one he lent against a small tree. Branch broke and protruding root pierced the green fiberglass tank. Took the red matchless Metisse and broke the front brake cable and took a little tumble. While a bit pissed he raced all weekend changing parts from each of the bikes. Think he was a rich car dealer from Sydney who eventually had big arguments with MA and seemed to go riding in NZ for a while. Had its politics back in 92 and onwards, will never forget the rubbish over Vern's Cheney. We all need to remember its a very very very minnow sport with a highly limited market. If you keep pissin off people it will disappear. Learn to relax and enjoy the HOBBY. If you want to be a professional racer buy a modern bike, cart or car and go your hardest.

In the photo of the husky, No 121, are those fox shocks on upside down? I thought the gas valve was supposed to be at the top.
