Thanks for the good wishes guys. A lesson to be learnt here, was pressurizing a pipe with air when one of the plugs blew off shooting the pipe off like a rocket. Caught me in the back of the hand real hard, nasty gash & I got to see two of the bones in my hand! I only ever use 40-50psi but obviously it's enough to be wary of. A couple of pins & I'm good to go, although I'm not getting out for a while as they are concerned about the bone getting infected after being exposed. 4 weeks in a half cast, then they say hopefully back to full function after another 2 weeks. Will have to have a serious rethink about fixing dents in pipes, the pittance you get paid for it isn't worth this.
Cheers guys,
K

Hope the Healing process go's to plan, all the best.
-
Good to see you are back on here!
I had a nasty pipe experience the first time, shot the bung out so hard it dented the shed side....a big bang that's for sure! I use a push bike floor pump though to pump them up, a leave it on giving a quick shot if the pressure drops during the job.
bad luck.. but could have been worse I guess. get well soon - and see you at the nats.
-
Yes, I'm lucky it didn't hit me in the head. It was on the bench not to far away from my face.....
K
-
Hope you recovery goes well k,I'm always weary of compressed air even when fitting tyres.
-
lucky man.
Air under pressure is dangerous. At a previous job i tested industrial hoses and its done with water pressure. Air releases violently and will send the fitting into the next block.(cannon. rifle, bazooka. truck tyre). Water releases its energy in a more sedate fashion. The end pops off and the water gushes out but with low inertia as the water absorbs the energy.
Good to hear the prognosis for your hand is all good.

Here is an artists impression of Big K's last stay in hospital after deiciding to park his Husky in the main straight at Ravo last year

Lol, look at those puppys!
K

Hope you repair fast BigK. I did the same thing earlier on in life and dented the shed as well , always use a hose clamp with some wire around the bung like the champagne cork holder style to keep the bung in and contained .
-
However, as a result of his previous poor behaviour, he has now been assigned new nursing staff for this visit & pics have just come in from the hospital. Big K has been quoted as saying "I promise I'll be good this time" :o :o :o

Get well Mick. There's no excuses for not getting into a blew at Ravo with your mate on here :o

That middle photo looks suspiciously like a resident of S.A who completely disregards his Norse heritage by riding a Yamaha. It's all becoming painfully clear now.....

It's all good Mark, there won't be any mischief in April, just all good fun the track. Are bringing that red Nipponese 4T PIL out for play?
K

heal quick mick, used to use oxy,set the flame, strangle the oxy hose ,shove it in the bunged up pipe,& light the mix, bingo,(if you got it right ;)) presto dents were gone, went a bit far one day, opened up a green strip GR pipe with a bang, flat as a lizard drinking ; :P
ps not good week for mechanics, guy up here roadtesting customers bike ,woman turned across his bow(didn't see him officer),took his foot off at the ankle!

K
My Nipponese PIL is a Pre78 bike Mick. Though I might run it in Evo. I'm planning on having my CR250RE built by then as well. Are all the jumps going to remain the same at Ravo?
Lucky for the other guy, I know you would walk away rather than get arrested ;)
-
It's an evo bike as well as a pre'78 bike so bring it along Mark, you could even ride in in the new pre '90 four stroke class if you wanted to. Rest assured the track will be in premium condition and perfect for all the classes at the event.

Take care mate and keep a good watch out for infection nasties ;) Tim754

Tough break Mick, despite your down playing of the injury I bet it did and does hurt like fluck!!! Hopefully you're back on track sooner rather than later mate, best of luck.
Cheers, Brendan
-
Ouch, hope it all heals well for you Mick.
I have had a few plugs pop out over the years and it always negates the need for a Pacemaker when it happens.
Just like in outer space, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You would think that the little plug shooting out would be the end of it but the whole chamber certainly takes a big leap as well.
-
you guys should make up a rudimentary cage to pin the pipe downin case this happens again...risk of it happening: possible...consequences if it does? possible serious injury with LTI and or medical treatment ;D straight from the "step back" risk assessment guide
all totally useless to mick at this moment >:(

Yeah, I will bring the PIL along Mick. I know that you secretly have a love affair for thumpers :o
I also know that you guys at BMCC will have the track and everything around it in schmick condition. I'll just have to lose a few kilos (alot) before april so I don't break the bikes when I'm landing from the jumps ::)
For those wanting to know what a PIL is, Mick not so graciously named my pride n joy a Pig In Lipstick.... Here it is

all the best and hope you have a speedy and total recovery, cheers

I'm out of jail at last (had to stay in for 48 hours of intravenous antibiotics), half cast for 4-5 weeks, pins out about the same time, then good to go after another week. Just another forced rest for my old body. I have three fingers free on my left hand so not totally out of action. Thanks again for all the kind thoughts.
Cheers,
K

Sorry to hear about the injury Michael. I'll hold off on dropping the tank and tailpiece for painting until you want it. First time I have had a long stay in Bendigo. Have deduced historically half the population was good and half naughty, as there are churches and pubs everywhere. I leave it to others where the naughties and good belonged.

Those three fingers are going to be busy lol you don't realise how much you use something until it hurts all the best for a full recovery & thanks for the alloy race plates. Jimson
If you blokes want funny scary stories try working a homogeniser machine at 18000kpa lol jimson
-
Good news Mick. There's less chance of getting any serious infection now that you're free from the place that breeds super bugs ;D
-
Best wishes for a speedy recovery mate , im always a bit anxious when blowing out dents . I never actually considered a bung coming out and the pipe taking off though . I will be more diligent in the future, hope you are back on your bikes soon and make your nats .

Two weeks in and all seems good. My fingers are all working which the hand therapist says is great & little to no pain. Half cast to immobilize my wrist as the pins are resting on the tendons & the doc says he doesn't want them worn through or I'll end up with a limp one, don't want that! If all goes to plan, pins out in two weeks, stay in the splint for another 2 weeks after that, then hopefully free. No matter what we'll be into March before I get my hand back. Apparently this is a common injury for footballers (punching) & motorcycle riders (crashing). Interestingly my left little finger is now "littler", it's a good 6mm shorter than before. The doc says it's because he had to trim the mashed metacarpal for a neat fit back together.
K
-
Good news indeed - hope the recovery continues to be as expected. Be good to go in no time!
-
Got the pins out today, which was an interesting event. Opted for a local anesthetic which is fine for skin & muscle but it does jack for the bones. Didn't feel a thing until the doc started to twist the pins to loosen them. They need a big hefty pull to get them out and I felt & heard every bit of it. 2 x 85mm long x 2mm thick pins, basically nails, are now in my collection of trinkets. Now that they're out it already feels more comfortable, another 2 weeks & I should be good to go.
K
-
Yep, that's how it works. Local for the skin, but nothing for the bone. Getting my pin out was an extremely uncomfortable experience! Only the one thank goodness, but then it *was* 250mm so maybe comparable :) Great to hear all is coming along well.
-
85mm long pins. OUCH. You must of done a good job of mashing the hand! You'll be ready for Ravo with plenty of time to spare ;D
