I'm guessing these are like Rocking Horse Shite these days but you never know what amazing information you guys seem to retain. If not these shocks, would also consider some Ohlins. Open to suggestions from anyone on other suitable cool shocks for a 1980 KLX. Would rather the shocks cost less than the complete bike, am I fooling myself?

I had some fox shocks for a while I didn't end up using them , when reading the manual they seemed to be high maintance ,I got them for a bit of history , and they look cool
Ohlins would be a better choice just my 2 bobs worth.
-
I saw some Ohlins and Fox shocks in the lengths you want on Marks Swapmeet when I was trawling the last day or so.
-
there is a guy on Oz ebay - selling a 79 CR250 and has some extras as well - I think he mentioned Fox Shoxs also - maybe slightly longer though. Worth a try
-
They often come up for sale on US ebay. Expect to pay anywhere from $400US to $800US for them.

I bought a pair on US ebay and got them sent to Thor Lawson for a full rebuild (just thought it would be easier for him to do while they were in the states), he also swapped the 17.5" that I bought for a pair of 18.25" that I wanted and he had, and got them shipped here and the total cost was about $950 including rebuild and shipping

seen 2 pair at $800 in good condition over xmas

Just make sure they fit and don't hit the frame up top , the ones I had wouldn't work on a tt500 because the top of the fox shock is large and it hit the frame and would not work , that was one of the reasons I got rid of them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Having trouble getting on to Mark's Swapmeet although from what I have read this is fairly common problem. Contacted the Ebay guy with the Honda, thanks for that one too.
Mick25 has got me wondering if the thickness of the body will prevent fitting to the mount. Has anyone else fitted Air Shocks to a KLX without mods to the frame?

Hope they fit ok as that's what I'm using mine for ???
-
You might need taller top mounts/caps to shift the wide part of the body down lower.

i have seen kx a5 1979 250 with them fitted , you need to find out the top measurement of the body I can't rember what mine were around 70mm I reckon , it will give you some idea on clearance up top .

Contact Darren 0425 797 029 got both ohlins and fox for sale cheers

This is an easy workaround. Just go to http://free-proxyserver.com/ you dont have to download anything. Just on that page enter www.vintagemx.us and it will take you there. It just works as a proxy server, so your not using your Australian IP. Also, Marks is on Facebook here.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/168212026656009/
Cheers,
Alex

I measured up a Fox shock many years back, don't know if they are all the same or not but from the dimensions of this one it won't fit a KLX frame as it is.
The eyelet part needs to be at least 25mm longer (maybe more) in order for the large part of the shock to clear the frame.
If you turn it upside down then you will have chain clearance problems.
From memory the problem with replacements for KLX shocks is that they are not only a long shock but also a long stroke shock.

Great info, thanks GMC and Old Fart. Got a bit more research to do.

After speaking with Darren, he has located 4 pairs of Fox Air Shox which may have prompted his decision to sell them. For more information, phone Darren directly on 0425 797 029. The longest one is 17.5 inch long. They are all usable and workable.

Where in Brisbane could you get a Fox Airshock serviced - replace seals.
By the way, this question has nothing to do with the shocks in the picture above from Darren.
-
Do it yourself ....they are easy.
-
I went through this dilemma last year building my 1981 KLX250. 17.5 inch shocks aren't long enough, you need 18 inch. I bought a pair of progressive brand from the US and modified them to get the correct ride height, I also run them upside down to get enough clearance at the top mount. They now work fine for Vinduro stuff.
FOX Shocks wont fit. The other option are to have the original units rebuilt, unfortunately I sold mine. Ohlins are an option but very expensive.
-
I have a set I would sell. Verynicecondition.....650 US dollars....PM me here if I terested....

KLX with Fox airs fitted. Top mounts look taller. I got a set with taller top mounts and am pretty sure Fox did make them. 17.5" ar real easy to find but the shorter lengths which i am after are much harder to find. You can make 17.5 into 18 with 1/2" longer top or bottom mounts. Top mounts in this photo look 1/2" taller to me.

There you go. I guess you can make them work with a bit of moding: )
