Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows when the coverage of the Dakar rally is going to start?
-
Monday 5th Jan 5:30 SBS
-
bump eyes on Toby Price :)
-
he has made a solid start to date and just needs to maintain position.
-
and again today.....whoop whoop...Go the Aussie's and not forgetting the old Bultaco bike :P 8)
-
Micheal Hernik passed away on stage 3 no causes found as yet doesn't seem to be an accident
-
failing to maintain position has pushed TP down the ranks but a late arvo charge has him making up ground.
-
8) 8) A good day was had at Dakar for the Aussie 8) 8)

Jacobsen withdrew at Stage 8. Price is still doing really well.
Some controversy a day or so ago about a stage that went thru a flooded salt plain, with the salt water causing plenty of problems for many bikes. I couldn't help but wonder whether it would've caused such issues for the simpler bikes of days gone by, such as XT500, XL600 et al.

they would have all stopped as soon as salt dried on the plug Tex, its a fantastic conductor..you have to keep wiping the plug base clean. happened at the wet mallee rally years ago. caught lots of people till they twigged...

Yes, but it sounds like it would've been easier to fix than the rot that affected the electronics of these bikes.
Price has come in at third place on Stage 11, and is now listed as 3rd in the overall standings.

Price will be spewin that he didn't follow Coma the other day.
Had he not lost all that time wandering around he would be just seconds off winning it now.
-
And who's face did we see on the sbs screen - first up 8) 8)
He's riding smart now 8)

Spoiler alert! Our Toby has won Stage 12, just a pity he wasn't on a Honda, looking good for a podium finish.

Toby Price #26 - “It’s my first go at the Dakar, but like we say, we’ve still got one day to go. Anything could happen and at this stage everything is just feeling good. We’re enjoying it, so it’s been a good experience. There have been a lot of highs and lows and good learning curves as well as a few mistakes, but we’re trying to fix them as best as we can and get to the finishing line. Hopefully, that will happen tomorrow. I always knew it was going to be difficult, but you don’t know until you actually come here and have a go and then you actually find out how hard it really is. We were fairly well prepared coming into the event. We’re just going to come back next year hopefully, now that we know what we’re in for and be an even bit better prepared again.”

I see there are two other Aussies on bikes running, I take my hat off to everyone competing.
-
Who are the other Aussies?
Got to give them a bit of a pat on the back for such a BIG task!

latest I read is TP is now 10 mins behind second place as the HONDAS copped a 15 min penalty for CHANGING ENGINES ;) so he is now within striking distance of second. amazing for his first go.... the paveys are in ~60th spot as they had drama with the old fella's bike in the wet but managed to revive it.
-
Great result for Toby in the end, must be an unbelievably gruelling event.
Just finishing would be a great achievement.
-
Gotta admit I am not a huge Dakar follower but what a fantastic result for another battler. Anyone got a list of other Ozzies who have had overall podium finishes over the history of this greatest of endurance events?
I am sure someone out there knows or will will dig the info up ;)
