Title: GTMX80 Electrical question
Post by: 211 on December 27, 2014, 10:25:22 am
Have 1978 GTMX80, motor runs, starts first kick but will not run past 1/3rd throttle without the motor feeling like the main seals have blown; wont rev out. Rebuilt the motor, new bearings and seals but now suspect it is electrical.
any clues?
Not sure if its the stator, condenser but they are the next suspects......

Good chance it's the condenser.

Condensors will show as arcing across the points, could be that and they are cheep.. have you cleaned the pipe?

I got sick of the unreliable condensers and adapted a lawn mower electronic ignition to my GTMX80, took a bit of fiddling and scratching my head on how the hell they work. All good and as reliable as the victor :)

flipped out condenser no better has a flame thrower for a spark, tweaked the carb and got it considerably better (extra half turn on the air screw)but still not 100% and it may be that the pipe is the problem as well, will take a look at it - blue stuff comes out the back that's as far as the investigation has got!

does the blue stuff come out faster as the revs rise?

Yep - sometimes the really simple things are the hardest to see  ::)
