.....just picked this up from a bloke, it appears to be an '84 KTM roller with an XL185 motor. It has a cable that runs from the rear brake, around in front of the motor, to a gear lever with a bolt through it, welded to the frame for a rear brake pedal ??? The frame has been butchered beyond repair but the motor could prove quite interesting.....apparently it has a CR Elsinore internal rotor and stator fitted, the ignition side of the cam has been cut off and it runs a CR CDI. :o
It also has what appears to be an oil feed line running from the top of the cases to the head........more info and pics when I pull it apart.............

..........better not post this on the KTM threads, I'll have all the KTM owners outside my door with lit torches and pitchforks ::)
-
Um Cute? pickup Roger. I too would love to see what's what with that ahh engineering. Cheers Tim754
-
Saw that on Facebook yesterday. He said he was keeping the motor and selling the roller. Must have changed his mind?
-
I have been told about this combo before but I think it was a xr200 in a ktm frame he said it was a fun bike to ride , if my memory is right :o
-
How can they do that to a KTM
the Boys are on the way .. No KTM will be left behind ...
I think is a 125 fram I wll get back to you .. 550mm long swing arm ???

.......pretty right Simo, he wanted the motor for his daughters bike, but after I showed him that half the guts were missing from the motor, I swapped him a standard XL185 motor for what you see here.....this motor is only an XL185 not an XR200....and he only just got it from someone else and has never had it running ::)
Roger
......have you been into my photobucket Dennis ??........and, NO, you can't have my GS400 ;D ;D 8)

Just what you've got to do if you want a KTM that runs for more than ten minutes between rebuilds.

Kia ora bro,
That was my bike, XR200 in a 1990 KTM 250 endure frame with Honda body work. nice to ride.
-
If it was yours Brent that adds a heap of credibility the the machine. ;)

it mite not Be thats a 1983/4 frame not a 1990 ..
some one may have copyed your old Bike ???
How did it Go I Think it would have been a Very Good Vinduro Bike ..
-
Sorry Brent, this ones an '84 with 185 motor.............and knowing your workmanship, this is no where near your standards.
Whoever built this one had his striped apron on..........its well and truly butchered :'(

Sorry I should have been a bit clearer in my reply.
I think Mick25 was referring to my "KTonda in his post. That was an XR200 motor in a KTM frame.

I've reformed now and own a genuine KTM

"?......Im not, I've got all three.....Honda, KTM and Honda/KTM ;D ;D" and bugger that's got me snookered :-\ ;) :)

A little more info.......when I started to pull the motor down, I found that the little shit that I got it off, had taken the CR ignition, CDI and coil out. >:(....anyway thats not a real drama, it just would have been interesting to see if it worked.
What these clowns have done is heated the front downtube and pulled it forward about 60 mm, but it didnt bend at the heat, it kinked the front of the tube :o THey have also cut the lower cradle tubes to let the front downtube move forward and just welded some pieces of scrap in to fill the space......being a chromemoly frame I'd hate to think what these infills were made of........I'm starting to take this as a personal challenge that I can still salvage this abortion.......time will tell like........stay tuned 8)
Roger
P.S. It WAS an '84 125 :'(
-
Finally got around to pulling this motor down........my guess would be that it was one of those 185 motors the kids learn speedway on.
For starters it has an oil line fed, twin bearing cam with some major lift and some very fancy valve springs. The cam is a two piece unit joined with a roll pin.

...............some major combustion chamber work.......I haven't taken the valves out yet, but I'd hazard a guess that it is ported ;D

The piston had one gudgeon circlip missing which created a gouge down one side of the barrel, but the curious thing is this erosion mark on both sides of the barrel......almost like some sort of combustion burn ?? ??? :o

How many gears Roger? Some of the speedway junior build ups had less than standard. Does explain the (missing) Ignition set up. Still an interesting little find and thanks for the piccies. Cheers Tim754

The kid had it up on FaceSook, with some clear photos of the ignition....

I wonder how well the CR ignition would work.
Don’t two strokes retard the timing with revs and four strokes advance it?
-
Hay Roger hear are some KTM Rear Guard and side covers ...
and they are in OZ and Prime8 have them thay a a Big Helper in Vinduro

Both benefit from the ignition advancing with increasing RPM. It is to do with the rate of fuel burning being insensitive to RPM while piston velocity is proportional to RPM, so at higher RPM the spark has to happen sooner so the most benefit is gained from the pressure pulse

Roger
Looks like oil blowing past the ring end gap and causing hot spots in the cylinder to me. Or it could of got dusted sometime which caused the worn ring end gap.....
Interesting motor all the same. The $$$ spent on the head work and bearing cam would no doubt exceed what you paid for the thing. ;)
-
Nice play thing. How's the piston looking? That bore damage seems to be in the same position as the head mods. Detonation perhaps?
-
really bad case of ring flutter ::),love the tubbed combustion chamber, :P
