AS THE RULES STAND,16.15.12 Acceptable machines and components: Evolution Class Solo
16.15.12.1 Bikes will be OEM (original equipment manufacturer).
16.15.12.2 Modifications converting later equipment to comply will not be allowed.
16.15.12.3 All components will be of the period the machine was manufactured:
a) No linkage suspension,
b) No disk brakes,
c) Air cooled motors.
16.15.12.4 Carburettors; period flat slide carburettors and any round slide carburettor may be used.
16.15.12.5 Engines and gearboxes must remain externally unchanged.
16.15.12.6 Exhaust may be modified but must follow the original lines and be fitted with an effective muffler.
16.15.12.7 Folding footrests must be fitted.
16.15.12.8 Countershaft sprocket covers will be fitted.
16.15.12.9 The handlebars must be equipped with a protection pad on the cross bar. Handlebars not fitted with a cross bar must be equipped with a protection pad located in the middle of the handlebars covering the handlebar clamps.
WHY OH WHY CAN IT NOT JUST READ, ALL MACHINES MANUFACTURED, 1978 TO 1985.
The word " PERIOD" is used but not defined, "16.15.12.4 Carburettors; period flat slide carburettors and any round slide carburettor may be used" we should all work at getting your clubs to set a period for EVO before any more rule changes, seems easy to me.

How about a slight change Trev to ALL MACHINES MANUFACTURED, 1978 TO 1985 that were originally manufactured with all the 3 elements of drum brakes, non linkage suspension and aircooled motors
-
If you want Evo to be period based, and who wouldn't, then all you need to add is a rule immediately before 16.15.12.1 that reads "Only motorcycles manufactured prior to 1 January 1985, and sold and marketed as models in the period prior to the 1985 model year, will be eligible for competition in this class".

I think Simo has probably the easiest fix I have seen, along with being the easiest to interpret.

Seems like a very easy fix Simo. Well thought out and simple enough.
Will it, however, allow the use of pre85 big bore air cooled motors from manufacturers other than Yamaha to be used?
-
Yep. Maico and Husqvarna

ffs evo is not based on year models
if you want a rule change
approach your club
your club sends it to your state sub committee
and then to ma . ffs ffs ffs ftw al

So you're happy to race against 2015 model Evo bikes E-YZ?
-
We race Classic MX. While Evo is a technology class it must still be a subset of Classic and not sit outside. If it is not Classic then wtf is it doing in our MOMS section?
Rules for Evo should therefore respect that the machine must be classic. Classic can only be defined by an era not by technology. Simo's idea of Pre 85 is as good a line to draw in the sand as any in my opinion. Don't see any need for having the other limitation on age e.g 78.
A pre 90 hot rod Revo class would be fun. Anything goes as long as it is twin shock, air cooled, drum brakes and pre 90. Not sure how many people would want to build something however?
2015 PDS suspended hybrids are not Classic. A pig with lipstick is still a pig! No one wants to kiss a pig.

How about,
(1) Machines built in 1978 or later that where originally manufactured with drum brakes, air cooled motor and non linkage suspension.
(2a) All non original components fitted must be from other machines or aftermarket manufacturers that comply with rule one.
Or.
(2b) All non original components fitted may be from a machine or aftermarket manufacturer that does not comply with rule 1, provided machine maintains the rule 1 criteria.
Two rules, one sets the standard, rule two clears up the modification confusion.
-
Classic criteria needs to be included in my view. Otherwise the category should be called Retro and not included in the Classic MX MOMS. Include it somewhere else.
-
guys, I don't think we need anything other, ALL MACHINES MANUFACTURED 1978 TO pre 1985, because when you add on 16.15.12.3 All components will be of the period the machine was manufactured: ie the machine can be made up of components from that era/ period, 1978 to pre1985.
a) No linkage suspension,
b) No disk brakes,
c) Air cooled motors.
there is no loop holes, easy to understand, EASY TO IMPLEMENT.

Hi Yes ,
1 , No linkage suspension,
2 , No disc brakes
3 , Air cooled motors
All major components must be from an Evo Eligible Bike,
Or is this too simple ,
Ps, I now have an Evo bike ,
cheers

I tend to agree but the 'grey area' is then - define "major components".
-
There's a generally accepted (but not officially defined) understanding that "major components" are:
Frame;
Swingarm;
Triple clamps;
Forks;
Hubs;
Brake backing plates;
Engine cases, barrel, head, clutch cover.
Some may argue whether brake plates and/or triples should be on the list, but you won't get much debate beyond that.
-
Hi,
I wish you guys could read,
yes, it is in Historic Road Racing
14.12.0.7
Major components;
a) All engine and gearbox external castings
b) Frames
c) Swingarms
d) Brakes
e) Forks and fork yokes
or is that too simple ?
Cheers

In some dirt track meetings that I have attended EVO is just air cooled, no links, drums. This leaves it open for ALL twin shock and triangle mono's generally up to pre 85 which allows a lot of blokes to ride up with their older bikes.
If you make it an era then you will loose a lot of riders in this class.
Whats so wrong with mixing it with the older rigs, in mx their is not too many older bikes that can hang with what some would describe a a "genuine" evo bike anyway.
In saying that I do know of a few specials with aftermarket frames, billet triples etc, etc running in pre 75, if thats what you need to win then go for it, but it just makes it more rewarding when you beat them on a stocker. ;) 8)

bamford
there is no cross over with rules historic /classic road racing is for road racing only
i tried to get a conical rear hub (1968 triumph) passed for pre65 as they are allowed in pre62 road racing
ma knocked me back.there words were no crossover in rules.so to have a manx (mag)triump bsa(alloy) rear hub is ok in hrr but only the manx is ok as pre65 cdt/cmx
silly but they regulate the rules

Can't argue with that.
I reckon I'll be up for at least one Pre-95 race.

FFS why then is the word period used in the rules?
